DELTONA -- A sport utility vehicle crammed with as many as eight teenagers crashed Friday afternoon just outside Deltona High School, sending four of the students to the hospital as investigators searched for others who may have fled the scene, police said.
One of the passengers, Krystle Accardi, was ejected from the 2001 Chevrolet Tracker as it spun out of control and rolled over her before stopping off the south side of Howland Boulevard, said Gary Davidson, spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The 14-year-old girl suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Davidson said.
Three of the others, including the 16-year-old driver, whom investigators identified as Pricilla Cedeno, were rushed to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. None of the teens' conditions were available Friday night.
All four of the injured students were good friends and members of JROTC, their classmates said shortly after the incident.
"You could call them the closest family in the world," said a teary-eyed Lizette Santiago of Seminole High School, who was in JROTC with the four when she attended Deltona High.
It was not clear whether the teens were wearing seat belts. The SUV they were riding in only seats five.
Officials are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred just before 3 p.m. near Howland and Loblolly Street, about a block east of the school.
Sheriff's Office helicopters continued to roam the area into the night as deputies rerouted traffic around Howland and the school prepared for a football game.
By the time Howland was open again to traffic about four hours later, investigators still had a lot of unknowns about the accident.

Losing krystle Alysse Accardi was a tragic moment for everyone that knew her..Lots of tears were and still are being shed.We all loved her very much. I for one am very depressed about this..
