Maria is one of the main support characters in Silent Hill 2, the first of the Silent Hill games to be ported onto the Playstation 2. She first meets James after he mistakes her for Mary, his wife who's letter is the reason he's even in the town... as far as he knows. Maria then accompanies James and keeps him company for most of his trip, often getting seperated from him ( sometimes by getting killed by Pyramid Head ). When James finds her locked in a cell, she begins talking to him as if she were Mary, about a video tape that he and Mary made years ago. She tells him that she could be whoever he wants her to be- whether this is a sexual tease is unknown, but assumed by most. At the end, Maria is killed by two Pyramid Heads, who are then killed by James. Actions taken by the player determine whether or not she returns after being killed dressed as Mary, trying to get James to take her. When he rejects her, she transforms into the final boss and tries to kill him.Though, in one ending of the game, Maria leaves the town with James after giving him a letter from Mary. When they're leaving, she visibly coughs, a hint that she has the same disease Mary had and that the game's events will repeat themselves.
Maria's personality is a bit mixed at times, sometimes hostile and bitchy towards James, but then speaks softly to him, and then attempts to seduce him.
One theory on her origins is that Maria was created solely for James (hence the "Born from a Wish" title from her scenario) because James wanted so badly to see his wife again, even an "image" of her, but that's not the only reason. She was created to punish James, too. She is believed to be a real person, but only to James, all because Maria doesn't interact with any of the other characters in the game, nor is she talked about. A good example is when James goes into the Bowl-O-Rama; Maria says that she hates bowling as an excuse to avoid any contact with any of the other characters. She was "born" with a very few "programmed" memories and a few from Mary and was born to be everything Mary is and everything she is not.
