Chance Antilles lived on Felisia in the Liat Realm during its invasion, and was taken underground by resistance forces. He remained on the planet during its occupation, and was intrigued by the aliens' method of biological warfare, horrifying though it was. Toward the end of the occupation, Chance's parents, who had been influential during the resistance movement, were killed by an increasingly desperate alien force. Chance was taken in by the head researcher at a laboratory, and spent the rest of his formative years learning what he could about life and how to manipulate it.

When a distraught and disoriented Meg Aldera arrived at the laboratory for tests after her myriad travels throughout the realm, Chance was instantly smitten and resolved to win her heart. The two were eventually married, and Chance knew a joy he had never had as a child. He put his difficult past behind him and decided to learn the ways of the Light as an Archon Priest: a member of the most celebrated sect of magic practitioners in the realm.

Chance traveled thousands of light years away to the secret compound of the Archons, where he was trained in the ways of the Light. However, the society of the Archons was not so unblemished as they would have the rest of the realm believe, and certain members of the elite upper echelons of the magical caste had begun to dabble in the magic of the Void, known also as the Dark Arts. When Chance was taken as the apprentice of one of these secret Dark Lords, he was slowly conditioned and molded into an agent of the Void.

When Chance returned to Felisia from his studies with the Archons, he was a changed man. Where once he had been vibrant with joy and life, he had become dark and brooding. Chance had left Felisia seeking knowledge of the Light, and had returned as an agent of Darkness. For a year after he returned, he wreaked havoc on Felisia and Titania, even battling against his own wife for the lives of millions.

Just as the conflict in the Liat Realm was reaching a climax, its divided forces were again assaulted by an unknown alien force. When Meg was taken and transformed by these invaders, Chance realized his foolishness in trying to dominate the realm and used his newfound powers of the Void to fight off the invaders and rescue Meg. Faced with no other way to heal his stricken wife, Chance reached deep inside himself and found the power of the Light waiting for him still. He restored Meg's infected body and came to a deeper understanding of his purpose.

Meg resigned her commission with the Felisian Navy to retreat with Chance to Titania. The couple spent a few quiet years on that planet until they were visited by a strange man who spoke softly but with deliberate intensity. He explained to them that he was a traveler and that he had been observing events in the Liat Realm. The man, named Archaeus, convinced Meg and Chance to join him in his travels, and their lives once again became an adventure.

Chance has been sent as an advance scout into the realm of Gaia, which Archaeus has been watching closely ever since the advent of the Animated. He and Meg have been learning about the realm and helping stave off the Animated, and they will brief the powerful traveler Archaeus when he arrives.
