Salis the Naiad Anon

Grinning roguishly, nimble fingers danced across the strings of the delightfully carved instrument, keeping in perfect time to her melody. Unable to help himself, his lips parted, and he sang in time to the tune, a song without words but with a great deal of heart, bittersweet but beautiful. As if coaxed by the music the two played, the flowers in the meadow beside the forest and the reeds and grasses at his river's shores swayed, the wind ruffling the air.

(( Dear sweet goodness, do I love Irish folk music. <3 ))

" Well, don't take the judgement of Kelpies too seriously, my friend. And should I catch them laughing at you again, I shall swat them firmly on the nose. " He assured her. " And...if at all possible, I shall try to rid you of this fear, given time. " He drew a ribbon of the water up and around his shoulders, like a shawl, which flowed around him, and reached into his waters, drawing out a lyre from it's waters. Carved from driftwood and strung with strings obtained from a bet with a drunken dwarf, he strummed a few notes, humming to himself. " Perhaps we should do something else, to pass the time 'til nightfall? "

He blinked twice, caught off-guard, and blushed faintly. Reaching out, he stroked her crimson hair, smiling softly. " Alright, I guess that's enough for one day. " He told her gently, swimming over to the river bank and seating both her and himself at it's edge. " We'll try again some time soon, when you've calmed down a bit. Tell me...did something happen to you, regarding water? " He met her ruby eyes with his own sapphire ones with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

" There you go...see? It's not so hard. " He assured her, beaming down at his student. Then, gently, he let her hand go. " See? You're doing it all on your own now. " The waves lapped at her, gently holding her aloft, the water cool and clear around her.

He chuckled softly, and held her firm and steady. " Easy now, " he told her gently, his tone as soothing as the lullaby of the lapping waves of the ocean. " We'll start with something simple-- floating. " With a great deal of ease, he scooped her up in his arms, and very lightly, set her on the surface of the water, still holding her hand to let her know he was there, and he wasn't going to let anything happen to her. " Just regulate your breathing, relax, and let the water carry you. "

A light seemed to flicker in his eyes, and he grinned. " My merfolk cousins are beautiful and noble, but proud and vain. I wouldn't recommend one as yourself swimming with them. If you truly with to learn how to swim..." He reached out, and with a gentle grasp, took her hand in his. " I'd be more than happy to teach you. Since you've shown me such kindness, I assure you, so long as you're in these waters, no ill shall become of you. " The current around him drew pleasantly slow, cheerfully burbling by, and light glinted off the lapping tide.

Wasting no time jumping into the depths of his river, the naiad surfaced moments later, looking distinctly refreshed. " Yes indeed. " He sighed softly, leaning against the banks of his shore, the wind whistling through surrounding long grasses and water reeds. " It's such a bother...as much as I love my home, I am odd for one of my kind, for unlike many of my kin, whom are content to their bodies of water, I...suffer from terrible wanderlust at times. I wish I was a part of the vast ocean, so that I may travel to see many more places than simply where my river flows. " He sighed, and smiled sheepishly, blushing faintly as his waterswept hair ruffled about his face in the breeze. " This must sound terribly foolish. I apologize for bothering you with my musings. "

He pondered hard. " I'm not sure. I've never actually had to do such a thing before. " He frowned lightly. " She has a wild look to her eyes-- I don't think flattery will work with this one. A clever cousin of mine once convinced a Selkie that her seal pelt was haunted, and that the demon would possess her if she wore it again, but I'm not sure how effective that'll be here-- that particular Selkie wasn't too bright. Perhaps we should wait until she sleeps, under the cover of darkness, and steal it like thieves in the night? From what I hear from my ocean kin, they almost always shed before they sleep. " Some of the color had drained from his face, and he trembled lightly-- he was beginning to feel the effects of being parted from his body of water too long. " I d-don't mean to be a bother, but could we perhaps discuss this closer to my home? I fear I'm beginning not to feel well. "

Ignoring the cries of the Selkie-- he knew of their kind all to well, from stories spoken to him by his kin--his face lit up at the percussion of the waterfall. " My, what a way with music this one has. Such a lovely melody she makes!~ " He delighted, before turning to the dryad. " If you'll only give me a moment, I shall speak with my kin. Surely a water spirit of this sort of beauty isn't the shy sort! " Turning his gaze to the Selkie, a shadow crossed his face-- and fair features morphed into a mask of something much crueler, much more ancient. Eyes became the inky black of the bottom of the ocean in their entirely-- eyes like a shark-- and human teeth morphed into rows of razor-edged needle like teeth. He hissed at it, and cursed in a high-pitched, screaming tongue something none too polite at it. The seal woman, startled, crawled back into the cave behind the waterfall, staring at him darkly from it's murk. His face would contort back to it's fair norm, and he'd grin sheepishly back at Mistletoe. " You'll have to pardon that. Beasts such as her don't listen less you're cross with them. " With that, he knelt at the water's edge, and parting his lips, began to sing, a bubbly, churning melody that seemed in time to the roar of the waterfall. Then, abruptly, he stopped, and listened hard. From the depths, a song in response, in a lighter voice, rang true. " Ahh, I see. " He'd look to Mistletoe once more. " She says she won't emerge until the Selkie leaves her be. She's quite adamant about it. "

The naiad paused a moment. " Mm, I'm not entirely sure. Whichever places you deem the most important, I suppose. " He told her, tucking an unruly lock of pale teal hair behind an ear. " This place is a great deal different than the upper lands where I flowed more prominently through, before the earthquake that furthered my route. There, it was colder, mostly composed of Children of Gaia, massive mountain folk, noble pines and the hardiest flora. " He informed her, studying his surroundings with a sense of wonder.

I have no idea. But she's done this before, where she finds new friends and spends more time with them than with me. Last time it happened I just figured I was being a jealous little b***h and I should get over it.

There's not much to say. We used to do everything together, but then she got new friends. I guess they're more important than me.

She has a boyfriend too, which kinda complicates things.

Yeah, I kinda have a huge crush on my best friend. I guess I'd consider her my former best friend now since she totally ignores me these days. And I wish I could not give a ********, but I do.

He smiled brilliantly, a burning blush lingering across his cheeks from her compliment. Kneeling down beside the pool, his fingertips grazed the surface of the water, and across the soft petals of a water lily. " Simply wonderful. The spirit that lives her is very young, and quite small, but obviously flourishing. It does my heart some good to know that my kind can still flourish, in these hidden places of the world. I'm glad I was routed to flow so near a place as these woods. " As if to his summoning, the small silvery fish of the pond swam up to greet him, nibbling playfully on his fingers. Chuckling, he withdrew his hand, and rose to his feel, grinning to himself.

He'd nod lightly, making sure to watch his footing and memorize the path she lead him along. " Good to know. I shall be sure to remember this place well. The woods you tend to..." he glanced about, at the rustling leaves, the gorgeous scenery, " ...they're beautiful. It's obvious you take great care, attending to your duties. " He smiled, his eyes alight with approval.

He blushed, the crimson hue stark against his fair skin in this form. " Heh, thanks. But if you're referring to my ability to alter forms, I'm not all that impressive. " He fiddled with the medallion around his neck. " Without this, I wouldn't be able to handle such a transformation. But it's becoming steadily easier to do so on my own with each passing day. " He grinned sheepishly, ruffling the back of his hair. " Yes, I'd very much like that. As it were, I can't stray too far for too long from my home, otherwise I become ill. " He admitted.
