About

John Deacon is probably the least known member of Queen, as well as one of the most underrated bass players in music. The youngest and last to join the band, "Deaky", as he was known, was considred the "baby" of the group. Queen had been through many bass players before selecting the quiet young "Deaky", with none of them working out. Roger, Freddie and Brian were fairly outgoing on stage, and they felt "because [John] was quiet he would fit in with us without too much upheaval", according to Roger Taylor. Interestingly, Deacon appeared as "Deacon John" on the first album , a move which the band thought "sounded better". His name would subsequently be listed as "John Deacon" on all albums following.

Not known for his voice, "Deaky" did not sing on any Queen tracks or in live performances. He was a vital half of the "Sonic Volcano" rhythm section of Queen, and his bass playing was always solid and consistent.

Though he didn't write many songs, the songs he did write wound up being some of Queen's most popular. One needs only to listen to "Another One Bites The Dust", "Spread Your Wings", and "You're My Best Friend" to see his contributions to the group's discography.

After Mercury's death in 1991, Deacon retired from music and is living a happy and quiet life tucked away from the press.
