“If one head is cut off, two more shall take its place”
Johann Schimdt, or more commonly known as the Red Skull, was Captain America’s greatest nemesis during World War II. He was one of the most powerful men in Germany and the Third Reich, second only to Hitler, though he was quite discontent with his subordinate position. As the only other man to have been given the enhancing formula that Captain America received, his vitality is much greater than normal. Johann got the enhancing formula from Dr. Abraham Erskine while the man still lived in Germany. He demanded it of him, but was unable to get the scientist to inject him personally so he foolishly took the formula and manually injected himself. He is a physical equal to said American Hero in nearly every way, except the grotesque mutation of his face into a Red Skull that occurred as an effect of the serum, the same symbol that represented his organization HYDRA.
Johann Schimdt, unlike some of the higher-ups in the Third Reich, truly believed in the existence of cosmic power and the ‘gods’ of Asgard. This belief led him to retrieving the famous cube the Tesseract, discovering it hidden in a small Polish chapel. This item, though giving him power by means of harnessing its energy for weapons, also led to his undoing. While in a battle with Captain America in a large HYDRA plane, he physically held the Tesseract, a mistake, for the power within it was too great. All thought he died, for it appeared that the cube disintegrated him, while in reality it only transported him to a different realm. For the near seventy years after Captain America crashed the plane and lay frozen in ice, he brooded, biding his time on some far distance planet. Recently though, The Red Skull was summoned by Thanos.
Loki having failed him and proved that earth was mightier than expected, Thanos, using his power, has managed to transport The Red Skull to earth once more, bidding him to cause chaos where he might, for if they cannot subjugate the earth they surely can destroy it. The Red Skull also agreed to this because he was further promised the chance of revenge against Captain America, whom he hates.
