IN THE YEAR 1803
A mysterious ship, known to the locals as the Utsuro Bune, washed ashore on Harayadōri (はらやどり), Hitachi Province. Inside the ship was a red-haired woman in her early 20's. She had pale skin, wore clothes of different styles or origin, spoke a language none of the locals understood and also, she clutched on a very mysterious box. An outcast some say, a princess from a foreign land, others say. She knew not of their language nor their traditions but, the woman appeared to be friendly and courteous as she stayed to recover.
Within the time of her stay, she held unto the mysterious box relentlessly, never letting it go. The fishermen got curious about the contents, so others tried to ask the woman what was inside of it, but the woman hesitated that she has no intentions of showing anyone its contents. Eventually, the curiosity died down but a story emerged. A fishermen claimed that: "she must be some sort of princess exiled from her homeland because of adultery, after a scandalous affair with a common peasant. Inside the box must contain her dead lover's head and the Utsuro Bune must be her only escape to her true destiny."
The fishermen then agreed to repair her ship in order to fulfill her destiny. Days before her departure, she explored the countryside. Curious with the vast beauty of the land, she seized every moment exploring the lay of the land. On the day the ship was fully repaired, the fishermen sought out the mysterious woman. Although, she was nowhere to be found. A few hours later, a farmer saw her and was called upon to be informed that her ship has been repaired. She was sweating, dirtied and covered with tree branches, leaves and sap when she arrived. The fishermen then realized something was rather odd about her. Soon after her departure, they realized her box was gone.
