Cable co. tech support. Customer is inquiring about the use of a DVR (digital video recorder, the "tissue" to Tivo's "Kleenex" wink .

Customer: How do I fast forward past the commercials?

Tech: You can only do that on recorded programs.

Customer: Well, when I bought it they said I could fast forward through commercials.

Tech: Well, if you are watching a recorded program, then yes, you can fast forward. Some people will record a program and start watching it 15 minutes later so they can fast forward through the commercials.

Customer: I see. What other functions does it offer?

Tech: (RTFM?) It works just like a VCR, except you can pause and rewind live TV, and it's more convenient since it doesn't use VHS tapes.

Customer: Oh, you can only pause and rewind, you can't fast forward?

Tech: ... Yes, with live TV, you can only pause and rewind. Once you're watching something that's recorded, you can fast forward it.

Customer: Is there any device available that would let you fast forward live TV?

Tech: (four times?!?!?!) That would be time travel, sir.
