About
You see me sitting across the room, drinking coffee and watching the mysterious play that makes up the everyday actions of the people around us. I make no notice of your interest, but I saw you walk in and look around. I saw your eyes settle on me with curiosity, but I feign indifference while I play with my latte foam. You notice the unopened book sitting by my hand, a bookmark tucked between the pages; a hardbound copy of Jane Eyre. My fingers are tapping along to the rhythm of the music that pumps through the cords I have anchored into my ears. Obviously I have little joy in the canned music forced through cheap speakers in the little room. If you could see my iPod, however, you would notice that no music was actually playing. I am more interested in the random snippets of conversation I can gleam from the tables around me. Something makes me nearly laugh out loud and I reach for a notebook that hides in the bag by my feet. I start to write in it, then look up and smile dreamily in thought. If you move towards me, I might cover the page with my arm, or I may let you try to decipher the mélange of languages I have written there. Japanese characters leave spaces for Spanish scribbles and incomprehensible English phrasing. I study you from under my lashes until you decide to come closer, nearer than I would like in this too-social atmosphere that I try to conceal my self in. I suddenly look you directly in the eye, questioning, challenging, and you pause. Should you come closer? You look down and shake your head slowly before looking back at me with a smile. It startles a smile from my lips. I nod towards the chair across from me and you take the offered seat. It is only then that I see the sticker across the notebook in your hand. “Say No to Blue Sun Products”. I laugh outright and unconsciously adjust my “Whedonist” t-shirt. We introduce ourselves. Such do we contribute to the mysterious play.
