from what i have read he was a doctor by profession. the poem was probably a note to his wife when he came home from a late night call. it is amusing. it really comes alive when you think about it being for his wife. it is simplistic but it has the nuances of the communication between loved ones. i think it is so amazing how it is so simplest but has so much depth. you can read it as funny, ha i ate your plums! you can read it as a daily communication. you can read it as a love note. to break down the symbolism it becomes quite intimate. he ate her plums that were so juicy and sweet.
i hope this was not too annoying. i just love this poem so i have read up on it.
