Though on the surface Uryu seems nothing more than a solitary class cool genius, he is actually one of the last remaining Quincy - a race of priest-like human archers who made it their goal to eliminate all Hollows. The Shinigami opposed the Quincies, as the destruction of so many Hollows unbalanced the natural cycle between the realms. Uryu bears a deep grudge against all shinigami, including Ichigo, but over time he and Ichigo eventually become allies and friendly rivals.
