The story illustrates the issues and complications with decision-making involving transformative choices. This indecisiveness arises for any choices you face or make that mainly include having a radically new experience, identity, or form.
In the infinite depths of the sea, there lies Atlantis, Poseidon’s kingdom. As years passed, the throne was passed to his son, Triton. King Triton, a merman and demigod of the sea, had seven daughters, the youngest named Elissa, of whom he is very overprotective and beloved most. When the little mermaid turned 16, she knew that she could swim up to the surface for the first time. She grew curious ever more so about life on the other side of the world. “The day has come!” Elissa happily sings. Fishes gathered and circled around her, listening to her sweet, pleasant voice. When she swam up to the surface, she saw the prince dancing happily on the deck of his ship. She had fallen head over heels at first sight. Not before long, the sky turned dark, the waves roared and grew bigger. The ship tipped and the prince fell into the sea, slowly drowning in the abyss. With a strong dolphin kick, Elissa saved the prince. Before the prince could regain consciousness, Elissa sank back into the sea, face filled with gloom that she might never see him again.
As Elissa returned to the kingdom, she told her mermaid friends and family about her encounter and desire to live there together with the prince. Much to her dismay, they did not support her. Instead, they chastised her and told her that she must conform and not forget her true self – to meet her father’s expectations, sing on demand, perform for the public and give up all hopes of a different life – to solely live as a mermaid. What does this really mean? Her body may be under the water, but her heart and mind are on the land with people. These complicated feelings and disconnections. She was unsure if she was born to be a mermaid, or did she become a mermaid. Is what she is truly who she is? If Elissa is a mermaid, why does she feel human? Why does Elissa look like humans too? So, what is the difference? Tail and legs. Eureka!
Elissa set out to find the sea alien called Ursula Witch. The alien promised Elissa legs in exchange for her voice. “My voice?” Elissa muttered, disbelief at her demand. She knew her voice is what everyone loved about her the most. To give away would mean that she can never sing anymore. In other words, a huge sacrifice. Do good things or successes only happen when you sacrifice? Why is there a need to give away to receive (give-and-take)? Is it impossible to have both? To have both would also be considered as greed since your only on the receiving end. The alien thus reassured her, “You don’t need it. But bear in mind, if the prince marries someone else, you will turn into a bubble. Once popped, you’ll disappear forever.” Ursula laughed hystDaneally. Taken aback, Elissa mind was all over. She could not decide. Concerns kept flowing to her endlessly. Dejected, Elissa swam back home with droopy shoulders and dark expressions.
How is he? Will he remember me? Does he know that a mermaid had saved him? Did he come back to look for me? I miss him. I want to meet him again. With a burning desire to meet the prince once again, Elissa broke the rules and swam up to the surface again. Just as she had expected, the prince sat on the shore, drawing a figure on the sand with a twig. Elissa gazed at him from afar, behind a rock. She began singing. The melody echoed to his ears. The prince got up while looking left and right, moving his head frantically. Yet, no one in sight. He let out a huge sigh. “Dane, we got to go!” His guard yelled from a distance as he starts the engine and opens the door. The prince dropped the twig, dust off his hands and went to his flying saucer. Off they flew and Elissa returned to the kingdom as well. She went back to Ursula after many serious considerations.
She accepted the offer. Just as Ursula snaps her tentacles, a wentletrap seashell necklace appeared like magic. The necklace functions as a transformation key to allow Elissa to have legs upon reaching the surface, by simply blowing the wentletrap seashell on the necklace. The next day, King Triton had found out. Raged with anger, he confined Elissa to her room and confiscated the necklace. Elissa glanced through the window, thinking. What is it like to be a human? How does it feel to have legs and be able to walk? Is it necessary to have legs to become human? What happens if I got into a huge accident in the human world? Will my legs get amputated? Will I lose my legs too? Then will I not be a human anymore? Will I return whence I had come from – back to being a mermaid? Dozens of questions ran through her mind. Since Elissa is a demigod, she would not die in Atlantis as she is considered divine. However, no one knows what variables there lies in the human land, as she must lose her mermaid identity (mermaid tail) to become a true human with legs. Those legs too…are they really hers or is she self-deluding, convincing herself that it is. If those legs do not belong to her, then who is the real owner? A mermaid with legs sure sounds scary. Will the prince be afraid of Elissa once he finds out her true identity?
Days passed and her fellow fishes friends heard of her confinement. At night, they stealthily helped Elissa out by grabbing the keys from King Triton’s room. Having consolidated her thoughts, Elissa senses she does not belong to Atlantis as she feels constrained by her patriarchal mermaid-society. Therefore, she decided to leave. She penned down a letter for her father and left. Upwards she swam. Arriving behind the rock, she blew the shellfish on the necklace. There, she transformed into a human. Long slender legs grew, and her tail disappeared. She knew then that the mermaid in her was gone, but not totally. How can she easily forget? It is not like she had amnesia. Being a mermaid was part of her life.
It is at this moment that Elissa felt she had reborn. She had transformed into a new identity and form. Now, she lives as a human instead of a mermaid. No longer she needs to swim or breathe in the water, but rather, she walks and breathes in air. Slowly but surely, her beliefs and behaviour will also start to change as she settles into the human lives and adjusts to being a human. Fascinated by her breath and the things around her, Elissa sets out to find Dane. Along the way, she found some clothes and food. Several weeks passed and still no traces of Dane. Even so, Elissa did not give up for she was sure that fate will lead her to him. So long as they are on the land together, they will meet at crossroads one day. In the end, what is bound to happen will happen, and the humans call this destiny.
“Ouch!” yelled Dane. They bumped heads. Elissa shyly bows her head to apologise. She was mute, neither can she talk nor sing. The sacrifice that she made to see him again was so big that she almost teared up. However, she did not know that Dane was already aware of her. He managed to take a slight glimpse of her face after she had rescued him. Dane held out his hand to help Elissa up. He was sure now. That smooth hands and skin, just like the one he felt that day. Ursula also did not mention that a true love kiss will break the spell.
“I’ve finally found you.” He smiled. He invited Elissa to his kingdom. That night, they danced together and had lots of fun. Dane then took her to the terrace. There they stargazed and kissed. Elissa finally got back her voice and she began to sing and serenade Dane.
