For designing an avatar, all I can really tell you is to pick colors that compliment each other. My current avatar has a sort of icy/wintery theme going on, so the whites and light blues work together. I've had past avatars that had different color schemes, but mostly think of an outfit you would wear IRL. Would you mix the two color items you've got if you were really going to wear it in public? (IE Orange shirt & green pants) If not, they probably won't look right on your avatar, either.
