Reproduction in nature
The plant reproduces itself naturally with the assistance of birds. Birds such as the missel thrush swallow the berries. Their droppings, which contain the seeds, land on a tree's bark and germinate.

However, sometimes the sticky, viscous flesh containing the seed sticks to the bird's beak when it attempts to eat the berries. The bird tries to wipe the stickiness off by rubbing its beak against the bark of a neighbouring tree. The seed sticks to the bark and starts to grow.

Propagation of mistletoe
a.. the best time to propagate mistletoe is from March to April when the seed is fully ripe
b.. ensure the seed is intact and hasn't split
c.. if possible select a host tree that is from the same species as where the mistletoe was harvested
d.. find a branch with a girth of more than 10cm (4in)
e.. a high branch is better because it's more exposed to sunlight
f.. remove the white, fleshy seed coating
g.. make a shallow insertion into the bark of the chosen branch with a knife
h.. insert the seed under the layer of bark
i.. secure the layer of bark with twine
j.. cover the seed with material, such as hessian, to prevent birds reaching it.

It's advisable to propagate more than one seed, as mistletoe requires both a male and female plant to produce berries. Also, the success rate of germination is quite low, with only about one in ten seeds becoming a plant. If the plant is female, it should take about five years for it to produce berries.

The most popular host is the apple tree, although it is not unusual to find it growing in lime, ash, hawthorn and other trees with soft bark. With the gradual decline of the apple industry in England it's becoming increasingly difficult to find home-grown mistletoe. Most of the mistletoe in shops comes from Brittany or Normandy in France.

Myths and facts about mistletoe
a.. The early Christian church banned the use of mistletoe because of its association with Druids.
b.. Druids believed mistletoe growing on oak trees was the most sacred form of the plant and it offered protection from all evil, as well as being the source of much magic.
c.. The mystery of the mistletoe's method of reproduction led many people to link the plant with spontaneous generation, fertility and aphrodisiacs. In medieval times, women wishing to conceive would wrap mistletoe around their waist and wrists to increase their fertility.
d.. The Roman writer Pliny believed mistletoe seeds would only germinate if they had passed through the system of a bird.
e.. Traditionally in Scandinavia, if enemies met under mistletoe they would lay down their weapons and not fight until the following day.
f.. According to Scandinavian legend, the god Balder the Beautiful is killed by a spear of mistletoe and so his grieving mother Frigg, the goddess of love and beauty, banishes the plant to the top of trees. When Balder comes backs to life, Frigg makes mistletoe a symbol of love.
g.. In Brittany the plant is known as Herbe de la Croix because it is thought that Christ's Cross was made of mistletoe wood.
h.. A man may kiss a woman standing under a sprig of mistletoe, only if he plucks a berry from the plant and gives it to her with each kiss. When all the berries have gone the kissing has to stop.

Viscum album is the most common mistletoe in Europe. In Britain it can be found in southern areas of England and Wales. It's a parasitic evergreen shrub that grows high up in the branches of old trees. The plant extracts its essential mineral nutrients and water by sending out roots into the bark of the tree it grows on.
