It's complicated... Have you ever played Sid Meier's Pirates? It's a bit like that in the sense you choose a side of a struggle and over the course of the game different cities get captured until one of the factions rules the world. There's an overworld map you use to get around, but when you run into an enemy unit it comes down into the gameplay mode where you have a bunch of soldiers and you run in from a third-person perspective and hack away with your sword. I know. I was very pleased with the ending, though. I was so scared I was going to end up hating it after I finished, but I was pleasantly surprised.
