In this excerpt from Dust Tracks on a Road, Zora Neale Hurston describes a physical confrontation between her stepmother and herself, and uses terms to justify her actions during the fight. The event that is being depicted in chapter 7 “Jacksonville and after,” takes place in the Hurston home on a Monday morning. This scene is shown as loud and rowdy which can be successfully depicted in such a way by her use of an immature and verbose tone. By using such methods of description, the readers are able to connect with her and experience pity towards the situation she had found herself.

The most important moment in this excerpt occurs when Hurston describes the intensity and the violent behavior that she portrayed during the fight she had with her step mother:

“Just the fierce instinct of flesh on flesh-me kicking and beating on her pudgy self- those two ugly false teeth in front-her dead on the floor- ginning like a dead dog in the sun. Consequences be damned! If I died, let me die with my hands soaked in her blood. I want her blood, and plenty of it. That is the way I went into the fight, and that is the way I fought it.” (L.L. 28-34)

This can be seen as the most important part of the passage due to the fact that Zora Neale Hurston was able to incorporate so much emotion and passion within this one section. By displaying such feelings she is able to capture the reader’s interest and establish a realistic experience for the reader.
