Check this out:
If Only
Outside, a high school senior stood, alone.
Still in his deceased father's old tuxedo,
He wandered towards the back of the building.
Although he tried to escape it,
He could still hear the music from inside.
Everyone had acquired a date,
But he stood alone,
Failing to meet the "requirements" of many.
Never had he heard that anyone had liked him.
Never had he heard the comforting sound of "I love you."
Never had he had a friend that didn't turn on him.
Never had he felt as if he belonged.
Every day, he walked to class,
Turning invisible as always.
And at lunch he would sit alone,
Shunned by everyone around.
He prayed for that one day that he would be noticed,
But that might be long to come.
He was a quiet fellow, but smart indeed,
Persistant and patient.
Always last chosen for partner,
Then left with all the work.
No-one ever knew his name,
If they even knew that he existed.
He remembered these things and more,
A movie in his mind.
He peered around the corner,
And there was no-one in sight.
So he continued thinking about his troubling memories.
He remembered when his father died.
He was only twelve at the time.
His father died of cancer.
He remembered when his mother died.
It was only three years after.
She died of a broken heart.
Then he remembered his oldest brother.
A brave soldier he was.
He died at war overseas.
And he remembered his other older brother.
He remembered when they had to get an apartment
And when his brother had to start college.
All his bad moments were brought back to him.
Lost in dreaded thought,
He could still hear the joyous laughs and music from within.
"If only I was dead,"
He quietly muttered to himself.
A girl, who he had not noticed was there,
Watched him as he treaded home.
"If only he could see me,"
She wished,
Desiring to help him.
