In Darfur Hundreds of thousands of people have died since 2003 as a result of the violence raging in Darfur. Some 4.5 million people, or 2/3 of the population of Darfur, are currently at risk of death or displacement.

Sudanese forces and armed militias are responsible for the majority of violence. The conflict began in 2003 when two groups of Sudanese rebels began an armed campaign against the Government of Sudan in response to discrimination against the people of Darfur. The Government-armed Janjawid were mobilized in order to quash the resistance. Supported by the government, these paramilitary groups have committed grave human rights abuses throughout Darfur and eastern Chad.

anjawid have driven out most inhabitants of West Darfur and other areas and used the land for their livestock. They've taken what was left of the agricultural produce, and attacked any of the original inhabitants who attempted to return - effectively occupying the land.

2.5 million Darfuris have been displaced from their homes and 230,000 have sought refuge in neighboring Chad. This is in addition to 110,000 Chadian civilians who have recently been displaced by the now-regional conflict, and tens of thousands of Chadians who have fled into Darfur.

Thousands of women and girls have been subjected to extreme gender-based violence, including abduction, rape, murder, torture, and forced displacement.

The killings, torture and rapes of hundreds of thousands of civilians, and the destruction of hundreds of villages, have unfolded relentlessly in Darfur since 2003. Despite international outrage and demands around the globe to end the brutality, four years later the deadly conflict continues and Darfur remains one of the world's worst human rights and humanitarian catastrophes. Violence, atrocities, disease and malnutrition continue to afflict the Darfuri people. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost, countless numbers of women and girls have been abducted, raped and abused, and 2.5 million civilians have been uprooted
