I doubt we can help it most of the time
We use our imagination too much in the first place at times
I just don't sleep at night, so I listen to music, that way I don't think I hear things
Doesn't always work though

I read one of his books a while back, it was Cujo
It was about this rabid dog that killed people, after I read it
I had to go downstairs in the dark, my imagination decided to play tricks on me :c

Yeah I understand what it feels like to not have a book available :c
As for me, I'm a sucker for anything by Stephen King
But as for genres I would have to say, crime and mystery are probably my favourite
As well as a good horror novel to read in the middle of the night c:
