It really depends on the tank and how well you can catch the gold. Some tanks with really good fish like Water Meats or something like that can get you a LOT of gold... My highest might be over 1000 gold but I've seen screenshots of people who've gotten even up to 3000 gold...

It's a game you can play in the forums... Some people keep their aquarium in their signature and on occasion, a fish or group of fish will glow and the tank will have a "Play" button. If you see this, you click on the button and the game is self-explanatory from there... There are even threads devoted to tanks with "good" fish, which usually deal out more gold than others... Sounds like a good start... Gold can be hard to accumulate, but I hear Booty Grab is the fastest way to do it...
