Well, as far as I can tell, the projectile vomit only infects the person it hits if it gets into his or her eyes, mouth, open wounds, et cetera. I guess it also freaks and grosses the victim out. I mean, ew. And that might have been in the extras or deleted scenes, if not in the movie. I just remember being even more scared of them because they would be that less escapable. They are already fast, but now they don't even need to catch you to make you the saddest zombie non-survivor ever.
And magic zombies are more of a literary thing than a movie one, like in folk tales and mythology and lore. It usually reads: A dark wizards raises the dead to carry out his bidding; the dead are mindless and ruthless. A light priest sets to banish them back to their world.
As for trying to find people, I don't think I would make an effort either way. Of course, it would all depend whether or not having a group would be beneficial.
What role would you fill in a group trying to survive a zombie outbreak?

It amuses me.
I like when people are staring and walking,
and end up bumping into someone else or something,
because they're so fascinated with my hair. x3
