I am a grad student studying Japanese and Museum Studies, but what I really want to do is write a cheesy horror/romance novel that will dethrone the unstoppable Laurell K.

But of course. My grandfather was one of the Marines who fought on Iwo Jima. He was in the same division as the flag raisers portrayed in that movie and saw both flag raisings take place. He didn't know any of the flag raisers, though. He was part of the main attack on the airfields--the whole reason for invading Iwo Jima in the first place--and wasn't anywhere near Mount Suribachi. I've actually got several things that my grandfather captured on Iwo Jima: some Japanese money, a bayonet, some letters, and a battle flag that all came from a dead IJA soldier he came across in a foxhole at the end of the runway at Motoyama #1 Airfield where he spent the night after the first day of fighting. He was there for 28 of the 36 days of combat. He was wounded--ruptured ear drums from an explosion from enemy artillery, but wasn't evacuated. He left when some of the Marines began withdrawing towards the end when Iwo Jima was almost secure. 3nodding
