Pretty much the point is just to talk to other people and earn gold. Honestly if you aren't into those two things then odds are you will not really enjoy Gaia.

Also, there are some games. Honestly most of them are sub-par but can be fun for a little bit. If you are into casual MMOs (I'm actually not) zOMG looks to be pretty well put together. There are the art (paintings, drawings, ect) and writing (prose, poetry, ect) arenas you can take place in if you are an artistic person.
