near the top of the page on the navigation bar is the shops button. There's the regular shops and the marketplace, where people sell old stuff they don't want.
Unless you want to wander and chat in towns, don't even worry about the worlds thing, it's becoming obsolete. chatting/roleplaying, playing games to earn money, and dressing your avatar are what gaia is all about.
