Who's this guy they call "Speedy?"
That would be American Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, the reigning men's aerials World Cup champion. The Boise native, who was given his moniker after repeatedly racing to the head of the line at aerials camp as a pre-teen, is now arguably the most exciting aerialist to watch. Peterson calls his version of the quint the "Hurricane" because that's the storm he feels like he's in when performing it. Technically, it's called a full-triple full-full, meaning he does one twist on the first flip, three twists on the second flip, and one twist on the last flip. Peterson leads an accomplished group of Americans into the Games, where he'll be joined by 1998 Olympic gold medalist Eric Bergoust , 2002 Olympic silver medalist Joe Pack , and U.S. Trials winner Ryan St. Onge .
Speedy figures to be one popular guy if he lands his "Hurricane" in Torino
Is Jeremy Bloom a lock for gold?
A favorite? Yes. A lock? Not so much. Jeremy Bloom , the former University of Colorado football star, secured his spot in the Olympics with a win at the U.S. Trials. But the 23-year-old reigning World Cup moguls champion will find stiff competition from the three compatriots joining him in Torino. Colorado's 27-year-old Toby Dawson was the 2003-04 World Cup runner-up; California's 22-year-old Travis Cabral was the 2002-03 World Cup champion; and Colorado's 23-year-old Travis Mayer was the 2002 Olympic silver medalist. This team is so deep that the reigning world champion, Nate Roberts, was left off the roster. Says Bloom, "We have the best freestyle team in the world."
