hmm well- you wont really know until you try! but as far as i know red mages in ffxiv, their role is DPS so they do physical and magic damage [as well as heal eventually]. PVP wise they are also relatively powerful for doing... well- the same thing as i said before; heal, do melee and long range damage. I'm not sure about tanking due to their role but they are very versatile in their own right.
