Spike has a very dark past. He lost all and with nothing more to lose he killed all that did him wrong. Leaving his home land he comes upon the dark dragon. The dragon saw his eyes and say his past brought him in and trained him to be a dragoon. Spike left with his new found power and hunger for death looking for someplace new.
