cancer sucks !this is a story i wrote about my journey
I will never forget
I will never forget when I had my surgery. I had my surgery because I had Chondrosarcoma (a rare bone cancer) in my hip. I did not have to have chemo but I had to have a serious surgery. The day of the surgery was October 27, 2006. On the day of the surgery my whole family came to cheer me up because I was very nervous.
A few hours later the doctor came and said that after the surgery I would not be able to walk for at least 2 months. At this point I started walking like crazy because I knew I would miss it. About a half hour later the anesthesiologist came and said he needed to give an IV and that it was time. My mom and dad got to come into the room. The anesthesiologist gave me the IV and I started to feel very sleepy. Then mom started singing to me All I Ever Have to be as I gently drifted away.
When I woke up my family was all around me I still felt sleepy though. I was not in any pain because I had an epidural. Then a couple hours later everyone left except for mom and my step dad. I was so exhausted. I slept like a baby that night, and I felt little pain.
For the next three days all I had to eat was ice chips. When I was able to eat, the nurse brought me a big tray of food. I was so happy to see real food! I was allowed to choose which foods I wanted to eat. I usually chose more food than I could eat. I missed home cooked meals.
Halloween was a special day because they delivered my wheelchair to my room. I was glad to get out of bed and see the hospital. I felt so free! I even got to eat downstairs in the cafeteria with my parents. I taught myself how to drive the wheelchair, to back it up, and turn corners with it. I got to look out the window of my room, and it was a beautiful view of Washington DC.
Right before I was released from the hospital, the physical therapists got me up on crutches. First they had to sit me up in bed. I felt so sick! They taught me how to use the crutches, and go up stairs with them. I had to learn to use them to go to the bathroom before I could go home.
When I was able to go home, I got in the car and went on the highway. It was a long, 2 1/2 hour drive. I was happy to see my house! The first thing I did was go straight to my couch. It was nice to finally be home.
I learned so much about myself and my family during this time. I learned that I can handle more pain than I ever thought I could. I also learned that my family will stay by my side when things get hard. These lessons will stay with me forever. It is a time of my life I will never forget.
now i am going through more tests because the doctor seen something he was concerned about by my hip and spine so i might have chemo. so i have tests on Friday the 20th and then a doctors appointment on Friday and Monday. i will tell you how it goes thank you!
