Understandable but not everyone is like that, of course.
And if they do dump/ditch you.. it's very odd a concept, but in a way it's good.
You see the reliable ones from the unreliable ones or if things simply weren't going to work well in general, it's usually better to have it end sooner than later when you've been invested in that bond for so long and got so attached. Personal experience, I'm not just spewing whatever sounds good, hah.
But yeah. You won't be alone. People care whether it's people from now or people you just haven't met yet - you'll see.

Nah, I better stay up. Otherwise my sleep'll get messed up, again.. I had gotten it somewhat under control for two days, at least. xP

The potential is the same everywhere, really..
But I think it's definitely worse in person. Worse that people could lie right to your face.. at least heartbreakers on the net are being losers and only have the computer monitors to thank for their sneakiness.
But it's really just.. you have to go in to things like this with certain thoughts ready. Of course you should always maintain some caution when dealing with new people, just for general safety purposes.. But you need to be aware that "yes they could be lying but they could also be telling the truth." And bad experience or not, everyone is risking having their feelings hurt by meeting new people. Everyone has to face it eventually. But without some trust and effort, they'll still be alone either way, anyways, and both paths are hurtful.
Not entirely sure that made sense, I was supposed to be in bed many hours ago, so.
