What did I know? Eve was mostly leader.

I was glad to follow--her games were fun.

Then, on that day, she came, not running,

stepping

delicately, wary as a fallow deer,

with great eyes, wide yet blind as peeled

plums.



She said, `you have to take a bite. You

must

or we shall die'. Sweat glistened on her

breasts

and she smelled different. I felt the wind

drop, heard the birds shrill in the trees.



She held it out, a big bright shiny ruby

with that place marked by her teeth,

the flesh calling me to plunge inside.

I took it in a dream, held it in burning

fingers--a drop of juice fell on my lips--convulsively

I bit, chewed, swallowed

as time roared through me red as virgin

blood.



Eve was staring, tongue flicking between

sharp, predatory teeth. Suddenly I knew

she smelled of fear. I took her then,

she struggling under me. From now on I

would be the master, come what may.
