Well, kudos to you on picking up on the older-younger-older again thing - that took me a while. I don't think that that's the work of Calcifer, though. I'm pretty sure that finding love is the way to break the spell. Sophie falls in love with Howl throughout the entire movie, so she keeps looking younger (love = youth). But when she pulls away from the one she loves, she grows old (no love = old). Make sense?
