Deathcore is another common example of this mistake. People get deathcore confused with different genres of metal as well as screamo. Most commenly the screamo and either death/black/doom metal. s**t you not, they get deathcore confused with doom.

I would not consider them punk. They fit more as post-hardcore/noise rock. There are good post-hardcore bands out there. Death From Above 1979 would be one, as would be Thrice and These Arms Are Snakes. Then there is shitty post-hardcore which is what most of the general population considers hardcore/metal/screamo when they really have no idea what they're talking about.
