Because if they weren't nobody would make it to the Elite Four.

On the other hand, we in the real world, as the controlling force behind the Player Character, may see battling with Pokemon as much easier than it actually is. The Player Character may be a rare prodigy. They DO go around capturing Legendary Pokemon, you know, and breaking up crime syndicates.
