Go into your account setting from the My Gaia top bar and there's an option to be invisible.

you can post on forums, there are many kinds of discussions and little games there
you can play games the zOMG! I hear is fun but I haven't been able to try it so I can't tell you anything about it
you can walk around the world of gaia
anything you do will get you gold and with the gold you can costumize your avatar
there's a lot you can do

You can, but that's not what they meant.

The GD is considered pretty brutal. Generally, if you show any sign of weakness or newbiness they'll taunt, ridicule, and Gaia-stalk you until they lose interest, which sometimes takes quite a while. Basically, it's full of trolls.
