About

What is Global Warming?
Burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - to produce electricity emits carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere where it builds up, blankets the earth and traps in heat, causing changes to the global climate.

Coal-fired electricity generation is the single biggest source of CO2 pollution worldwide. CO2 is also produced when natural gas is burned, for example for home heating and in industrial facilities. Other greenhouse gases include methane, CFC's (ozone depleting chemicals) and nitrous oxides.

Carbon Dioxide – Where does it come from?
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most significant of the global warming gases, accounting for more than 80% of global warming pollution.

Around 97% of the CO2 emitted by western industrialised countries comes from burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - for energy. The two leading sources of CO2 are electricity generation and transport.

Did you know...

* Atmospheric levels of CO2 are now higher than at any time in the past 420,000 years.
* Approximately 23 billion tonnes of CO2 are spewed into the earth's atmosphere every year. That's more than 700 tonnes every second.
* An average car with a fuel consumption of 7.8 litres/100 km travelling 16,000 km per year emits almost three tonnes of CO2 per year. That's roughly equal to three times the vehicle's body weight.
* Each large 1,000 Megawatt coal-fired plant typically emits 5.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
