ABOUT THE CANCER

Definition
By Mayo Clinic Staff

Leukemia is cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system.

Many types of leukemia exist. Some forms of leukemia are more common in children. Other forms of leukemia occur mostly in adults.

Leukemia usually starts in the white blood cells. Your white blood cells are potent infection fighters — they normally grow and divide in an orderly way, as your body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, which don't function properly.

Treatment for leukemia can be complex — depending on the type of leukemia and other factors. But there are strategies and resources that can help to make your treatment successful.

I'm a survivor of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I was diagnosed on December 3rd, 2014 and went into remission Sometime in April of 2015 (I forget the exact day.)
I had a bone marrow transplant on July 22nd 2015 and am now in complete remission.

I was 21 when I was diagnosed. Getting leukemia isn't fun at any age, but it's shitty for me because when you're 21, you want to be out and hanging out with your friends and doing stuff. Not sitting in a hospital, wondering when you're going to die.

Congrats again on winning your fight. One thing about getting it at 21 is your body is more capable of handling treatment options. Usually. It's not an option for the elderly. My grandpa got Leukemia at 70 and was gone in four days.

And they don't really do chemo at his age, so there wouldn't have been anything they could have done.

*nods* It was offered, but they said it was unlikely to help at that stage and with his age. He wanted to go without it.

When I was a child I lost my best friend, who was 8 years old when she passed, to leukemia. She was 2 years younger than me and had a sister my age but we got along the best for we made up stories/played via imagination while traveling in the car and such. She had two surgeries that I know of to remove cancerous growth from her abdomen. Both were large growths and she named both. The first was Carl, the second Carl's Jr.

It's been about 23 years (yes I'm old) but I still remember her with fond thoughts. Her and her stuffed dog toy she named Puppy.

A lot of Gaia is in their 20s-30s, with some over that. I am 29 myself.
