General Rules

* Please read the front page. The stuff up here is here for a reason - don't just come in, look at the pretty art, and start asking questions that have already been answered. Questions are good, but make sure it hasn't been asked before.
* Don't ask if there is anything for sale. There is an availability post for a reason.
* Co-owning is not allowed. No co-owning is simple enough, right? The reason is because it's impossible to share a character and RP it properly if it has two owners. You can help pay for something if you want, and maybe we can make a note of that, but each thing can only have one player.
* One character per person unless permission is given otherwise. I like having multiple characters. You wouldn't believe how many characters Syrie and myself have in this world, technically. But we play all of them. You must prove dedication and ability before you're allowed more than one character.
* No 1337 speak. It's fine in thread as a joke - we do it for fun, of course, but not in RP. RP must be literate. And try not to overdo it - if it ever starts to get out of hand, this may turn into a totalitarian no-1337 rule. I'd hate to do that, but if people don't know when to stop, I will.
* No art theft. Art is (c) the artist, of course. We will eat you and your firstborn children if we catch you stealing. <3
* Do not direct link. These don't grow often enough for that. Please save the images yourself. If my poor, limited bandwidth starts dying, the images will come down. I want to keep them up so people can see, but if people drain what little Photobucket gives me, I can't help but break the links.
* Be respectful. Everyone on here is a person in reality, okay? Treat people as you would have them treat you.
* Don't piss off the foxpoof. omg no srsly. He will eat your face or something.

Sale Rules

* No whining. If someone has more gold than you in an auction, don't b***h about it. If someone else is participating in a writing contest or flatsale, don't fuss about how much better they are than you. Everyone has a fair chance, whether by their writing skills or having earned the gold they're using to bid.
* Do not discourage anyone from participating. If we see this happening, you will get greylisted, no questions asked. Do it again and you'll be banned. We're very serious about this rule; everyone has a right to join in.
* Auctions accept donation items and letters only. They will be taken at mid-TEH GUIDE price.

Roleplay Rules

* Read the roleplay section. It is there for a reason. It is required reading if you are to roleplay.
* Roleplay is required. Just because you can do anything with your character doesn't mean you can just disappear. People who are inactive for more than a month will recieve a notification. More than that will get you a warning, then your character will be given to someone else to play. After all, the whole point of the shop IS roleplay based.

In the beginning, there was nothing - or perhaps there was everything. No one knows for sure - except me. Yes, I know, I know the answers that priests and scholars only dream of; I know the answers to the universe and everything held within it. I know why we are, how we are, when we are, and how long we will be. I know the beginning, and I know the end. I know these things because I am these things, and everything in between. I am me as well as I am you. I am the everything, the embodiment of existence and creation and nothing all wrapped into one. I am everything that you see, that you feel, that you taste and touch and smell and hear. I have no name, no one thing that can be defined as 'me' - my name simply is. If you must call me something, however, you may call me "Eden." I am the embodiment of everything - everything you can ever be, everything you can never hope to accomplish, everything that is and never was, and this is the 'name' that has survived for those that would whisper of my legacy.

So how do I speak to you? How do you speak to yourself - how does anyone speak to you? I am - therefore I can do as I wish. Perhaps the question you are seeking is not 'how,' but rather 'why?' I must ask you the same thing - why would you speak to me? Why would you open your heart and listen to what I have to say? You could ignore me as so many have had over the test of time - deny yourself reality and everything that is encompassed within. But you have chosen to listen to yourself, to listen to me, and to feel what it is that I have to 'say.' That is why I speak to you - I speak because you are one of the ones who would listen, one of the ones that wish to touch reality and catch a glimpse of what it is really about.

So you didn't ask for this desire? Silly child, how precious you are - I know you didn't, but you have it, nonetheless. It is there, inside of you, waiting to bloom into something more. The question is, will you fade away like so many have? Will you stop searching and give up all hope, return to the mundane and melt into the masses? They have my love just the same - you are all my children, you are all me. But there is something more waiting for you, something new, something deeper and more exciting than anything you could ever hope to imagine on your own. I can show you a gateway to a new reality; I can give you the key to a new existence, a new place far wilder than those dreamscapes you fly away to in the embrace of the night. I can open the doorway, bring you into a new state of being and show you the Origin, the place where everything started, where everything will end, and the center of everything in the middle. I can show you the land of Elantaea, a land of good, evil, and the grey that comes when the two meet. I can show you a land of balance through imbalance; I can show you a land of love and strife, of war and peace. I can show you the birthplace of gods, and I can make you a part of it.

This is your choice, my child - this is your doorway, your only chance to break the surface and step onto the other side of the mirror. In this moment I open my arms to you and bring you across the border into another consciousness.

Welcome to our world.

...welcome to our world... is not a place where one gets a 'pet,' so to speak; while there is a connection to Gaia, it isn't something that every creature in the place will ever pass through. Instead, this is a place where someone can take on a new reality and be part of a different world. In common terms, that means that a player gets a character and acts out his or her life - a roleplay shop, if you will. However, there is no "HQ" or main "shop" - your Gaia character will most likely never come into contact with anything from this place. That doesn't mean you can't display your character, of course - it just means that it probably won't be something you can mark as 'family' in another journal.

This is a place for people that want to have something a little bit different. The races here come in all shapes and sizes, with all numbers of abilities and 'powers.' No two will ever be identical (except perhaps in the rare case of twins, and even then identical creatures are almost never seen). This means all art in the shop is unique for each character. There is no premade lineart, not even bases; everything is done from scratch and presented to you as a fully unique individual.

So what is there to do? Anything at all - anything you desire. Your new self can live a relatively mundane life, almost akin to that which us humans live on a daily basis. Or, if you prefer, you can live a life of mystery and intrigue, slinking about from city to city, a lone wolf, never allying yourself with anyone. Perhaps you would rather devote yourself to a deity and follow their path for good, or evil? Or perhaps you would rather struggle to become a deity, ignoring others in the pursuit of your own noble - or ignoble - goal. Perhaps you would like to try to rise up into one of the illustrious Houses and make a name for yourself among others of your kind? Perhaps you would like to fool the denizens of another world into thinking that you are yourself a god, thereby attaining illicit power for your own end? Whatever you decide, the choice is ultimately yours - and no matter what you do, it will surely bring some kind of growth or change to yourself. This means that you will grow and change through roleplay. There is no set number of 'stages' - the more you develop your character, the greater your chances for more, and better, artwork.

This is a place you can jump right into; your new self will be ready for action as soon as you choose a skin to crawl into. Everything has some kind of skill to start with - what kind of personality will you make for yourself in this new place? Will you resent the training you have as a swordsman, deciding to branch out and make a name for yourself as a sorcerer? Or will you embrace that smithing practice you underwent as a child and try to become the best? What you do is up to you - but everyone is good at something. It is up to them if they follow the path the gods have set out for them. This means new characters will start at a 'playable' age - generally adult, though occasionally they will be teenagers. There are no playable youth stages unless attained through breeding. Each new character will have a certain background and set of skills, but no set personality. New skills can, of course, be obtained through roleplay.

So what will you decide to be? This is your world now - make the best of it.

A quickly sketched map to give a general idea on locale.

About Elantaea

Elantaea is a place that exists everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. It is the center of creation, if creation can be said to have a 'center;' it is the place where gods meet reality and their power seeps out to fuel existence. It is the lone continent on a sea of magic and dreams - as whimsical as that sounds, though, it isn't just some flighty little place of imagination. It's not sunshine and lollypops here. Elantaea was the first real step of creation, the first solid thing beyond the random whims of gods that were birthed and died in the cruel embrace of Chaos. It is the natural way, the path that Eden set out for everything when He was there at the beginning. It is the Origin, the place where solidarity took root and tested the waters, so to speak. It is the connection between the mortal realms, born later when reality was ready to be woven, and the realms of the gods themselves.

Elantaea is similar to our world, and many other mortal worlds; there are plains and deserts and forests and mountains. There are rivers and lakes and beaches; there is weather, there are seasons, there is day and there is night. At the same time, it is wholly different from where we exist. These things do not come about because of orbiting a planet, like our own home - they come from the will of creation, the power of the general belief that they are necessary. That said, there are places where, unlike Earth, these rules do not apply; there are always places where the rules are broken. Places where it is perpetually night, places where it is always hot, places where water is as breathable as air and places where fire burns eternally. These are the rules of the peoples who live in this place, for they have control of their world far more than any mortal could hope to have.

Isles of Elantaea and the Spherical Pantheon

The topography of Elantaea is relatively simple; there is no true 'north' or any direction of the sort - since the plane exists on its own, not on a planet. However, generally the denizens refer to the Isles of Elantaea - the gates to the godrealms - as the main point of direction for travel. Translated into our tongue, the closest word would be 'north' - otherwise the word is simply a concept meaning 'in the direction of the ones high above us.' Hence, it is much simpler to call the Isles of Elantaea the farthest location 'north' on Elantaea. There are places past it of course - but no cities or civilized areas to speak of, so the translation works relatively well.

The closer to the Isles one is, the higher the elevation; the gateway to the Isles is the highest point of the entire continent of Elantaea. The Isles themselves do not obey the laws of gravity - they are an indefinite amount of floating islands bridged together with what seem to be tenuous connections at best, though none have ever broken. These islands are home to shrines and architecture dedicated to an eternity's worth of gods. No mortal has ever climbed all of the islands, few have ever even seen the place at all, and only the strongest of the Elantaeans - whether they be Angelicani, Monstros, or Muse - have ever reached the top of what is described as an infinite spiral of landmasses. How one reaches the end is a mystery - there have been those who spend lifetimes climbing only to fail, and others who have overcome all of the pathways in mere days. Time and space is something that is purely relative in the Isles; they shift and change as easily as a drop of dye in a swirl of water, and anyone journeying on them can be lost just as easily.

At the 'top' - or perhaps 'end' is a better term - of the Isles is the Spherical Pantheon. This is the gateway to the godrealms - the individual spaces of creation that each god holds as his or her (or its) own. Any godrealm can be reached from the Spherical Pantheon, as well as the Heart of the Pantheon itself, which is used as a testing ground for new gods when old ones die. No one knows - or perhaps, can comprehend - the total number of gods, if there is one at all. Any god that is whispered about by mortals exists here; the more mortals worship them, the more power they gain. That is not to say that all gods have true 'power,' however; only those that have believers have strength and are considered 'alive.' A god can never die, but he can fade from existence and fall from power, either merging with Eden, becoming reborn as an Elantaean, or simply sleeping in the Heart, waiting for a mortal to discover his name and whisper it in prayer again.

A godrealm is a 'space' - though how it is measured is unknown - where the god has complete and total control over his or her area. It is their one true taste of Eden's power; they can create and destroy, alter and manipulate, do whatever they please. Some gods warp their godrealm into something completely unrecognizable to mortal eyes - a solid mass or a conglomeration of things that should never be near one another. Some gods shift their realm into something surreal - a place with mystic fish flying in the air, a place thriving on the surface of a miniature sun, a room of stars and planets to toy with as they wish. Some godrealms shift and change with the moods of their creators; some are solid and unchanging unless the most intent of concentration is put forth. Some are mere feet across in space; others span what seem to be whole continents or even worlds. Some gods create life to thrive in their home - though they drain power rather than give it, no matter how much they worship - while others leave their place of rest bleak and barren. Some allow the souls of mortals to pool in their godrealm after death rather than be reborn, sucking as much belief as they can out of them; others do nothing with their mortal worshippers after death, or perhaps help to guide them on to new lives. Whatever the case, each godrealm is unique unto itself, something completely connected to the god that created it.

Cities and the Houses of Elantaea

Angelicani Cities

Sviit - House of the Gate: The city of Sviit is the closest city to the Gate to the Isles of Elantaea. It is settled at the base of the great mountain on top of which the Gate is located; the altitude of the city is still much higher than any other city on the continent. Residents of Sviit are very proud of their heritage and consider themselves guardians of the Gate. It is rare that outsiders are allowed to move into the city without a marriage or joining arrangement, though there is a sector which allows visitors to stay and visit or trade. Sviit is a very organized city, starting with the Lady's palace in the center and spiraling out neatly with sectors of the city divided much like a nautilus shell.

The House of the Gate is also known as House Illustrious to some. This House devotes itself entirely to upholding the sanctity of the Gate and serving whatever gods its members choose to follow. The leader of the House is currently Lady Jelariane, a great swordswoman and sorceress who believes that physical and spiritual strength together is the path to righteousness and purity, both of which are qualities she believes everyone should seek. She rules the members of her House strictly, demanding loyalty and obedience from all of them. In return, the members have access to some of the finest weaponry and armor in all of the Angelicani cities, as well as the honour of calling themselves Guardians of the Gate.

d'Exla - House of the Silver Coin: The city of d'Exla is the trading capital of the Angelicani world; it is a sprawling city on the coast, filled with all manner of Angelicani and Muses bustling about working and trading and generally living their lives as social creatures. It is the only Angelicani city that openly admits many classes of resident, from the relatively poor to the overtly wealthy. d'Exla is a city built on money, and it is not afraid to admit it. Its streets are built as needed, the buildings expanded when necessary, and the way of life shifted as the call for coin demands. Many from other cities consider it the least 'Angelicani' city of the four, but residents will disagree, believing their way of life is a more natural and free one.

The House of the Silver Coin is a merchant's guild of sorts; the House provides discounts and special deals to members, as well as helping them move their wares and earn more. It isn't impossible to be a merchant without being in the Silver Coin, but joining makes life much easier than it might've been otherwise. The House is also known as the House of the Thriving Twins recently, because it is the only House with two masters - Lady Jilliet and Lord Sallaet. The two function together as one solid leader, with Jilliet dealing with social matters and Sallaet taking on the paperwork and mathematics of the business aspects.

Frimynt - House of Shooting Stars: The city of Frimynt has long been regarded as the magical center of existence; any legends of a fabled city of seers and sorcerers will, most likely, ultimately be referring to Frimynt, or a place that is emulating it and its teachings. Frimynt is the ultimate home of those who wish to practice some kind of spiritual or mental power or technique; everything from mages to alchemists to scions and shamans come from here. It has been built to pay homage to the Isles of Elantaea, though some outsiders believes it mocks the Isles and their greatness. So how does it pay 'homage' to the Isles? Frimynt is a city upon the air, powered by the wills of the most powerful magic users the Angelicani have to offer. There are several large islands floating above the central focusing point - a large temple with thousands of crystals formed from the energies of whomever wishes to donate to the city, as well as the large central focuses of the primary mages, which have been compressed into one sphere of pure energy. The temple is guarded from invasion with summoned beasts, golems, and loyal sentinels of all sorts - only the ruler of the House of Shooting Stars may say who can enter safely.

The House of Shooting Stars is the ultimate mages' guild; they have apothecaries, supply stores, creation centers, and aides spattering all of the islands of Frimynt, as well as large centers in the other three Angelicani cities. The leader of this House is named Xirit, and that is all that is known about him - except that he is a powerful enough magic user to lead the House into its current glory. Xirit is always shrouded by robes and arcane wards, so none know his true nature and form. Nor, generally speaking, do any of those in his House mind - they are usually too busy researching or practicing under his gaze to give thought to it.

Aesaai - House Exilius: No one knows anything about Aesaai anymore. A great sphere of energy surrounds the city above and below, preventing entry from any Elantaeans that have tried to gain access. Some believe that Aesaai is being punished by the gods, others believe a god is being born there... some believe that some form of revolution has taken place, and others simply don't care.

Prior to this development, Aesaai was a rather small city, if powerful; House Exilius has only come into existence in recent Elantaean history, so its home city had not yet developed as fully as possible. However, it is commonly known that there was already a great pride with those from Aesaai - enough that some were even reputed to have referred to themselves as Aesaaians as opposed to Angelicani. The Muses that once visited this city claim it is a place of spiraling architecture and abstract art, filled with the odd thinking and unusual Angelicani that could find no true home anywhere else. Warriors with original styles, sorcerers and summoners with unique spellcrafts, artisans with new techniques... Aesaai was a place of new minds and tradition breakers of the Angelicani world to congregate.

House Exilius promoted all of these; its leader was the creator of the House, his name matching its. No one can say what has happened to the House and its city, however, as none have heard from Exilius or anyone in his city since the great sphere appeared.

Monstros Cities

Macté - House of the Seventh Star: Macté is the oldest and largest of the Monstros cities, by far. It is home to what claims to be the first House in existence, and it is definitely one of the most powerful centers in the Monstros world. Macté is a city of wealth, lasciviousness, and decadence, all wrapped up in high arching architecture and well-kept features, all under the gaze of the fabled White Palace. The city is divided into two sections, Greater and Lesser Macté, with one of the continent's two rivers dividing it in half. Both sides are equal in impressiveness - the names come from the fact that Greater Macté was the first section built, and contains the White Palace, while Lesser Macté came into existence as an expansion plan under Lord Veliao.

The House of the Seventh Star claims to be the first House, and this isn't without reason. It has documents reaching back farther than any other House, though the others will contest this and claim they are fakes. More than this, however, is the outstanding claim that this House has only had one Lord - and no one can prove otherwise, so far. While Macté is said to have been in existence before the House, much like all of the other cities, it was quite young and underdeveloped. When Lord Veliao came to power through the untimely death of his father, he created the House of the Seventh Star to extend his power past his city walls - at least, that is what he claims. The other Houses disagree, claiming that no one Monstros could stay in power that long, saying that there have been heirs taking on the same name and appearance, as well as a wide variety of other strange accusations.

Whatever the case may be, no one can argue the fact that the House of the Seventh Star is the most powerful House on Elantaea. Its strictly trained armies, utterly loyal members, and vast wealth of resources, knowledge, and ability leave no other options available. The House of the Seventh Star has anything they wish at their fingertips, thanks to the leadership of Lord Veliao and his newly joined mate and General, Tuonela.

Eden's Veil and Gates to Other Worlds

Eden's Veil is the name for the protection that creation has bestowed upon Elantaea from other worlds. The Veil is not a physical thing to be seen, but instead it refers to the invisible barrier that protects the plane from invasion from others. Some outer worlds have learned the secrets to teleportation, gate building, and summoning. This could potentially wreak havoc on Elantaea; mortals could swarm the place or summon individuals out at any time for their own amusement. However, Eden - or so it is said, though some claim it is simply the decision of the gods to protect their own lands - has seen fit to disallow this from happening.

Eden's Veil makes it so that only Elantaeans, or those with Elantaean blood in their veins, can travel to or from the plane, or summon to or from the plane. It also makes it so that only those with Elantaean blood can use gates that are set up to create permanent contact to certain worlds. This does not mean that mortals cannot enter Elantaea - what it means is that they cannot appear there unless they are specifically brought there.

Gates are very rarely built, but when they are, they take great amounts of effort to make permanent. While mortals cannot pass through them, they still create a permanent connection to an outside world, and therefore put a great strain on Eden's Veil. It is rumored that should enough gates come into existence, the Veil would collapse, and ruin would come to the land. Many call this the beginning of the End, which could only happen in the Origin, but others write it off as speculation. Whatever the case, few know how to build gates, and fewer even want them, particularly when Midway is often an option for those who travel to other worlds.

Midway and Eden's Contract

Midway is not a feature of Elantaea per se, but it is worth noting because it is the only way to journey to new worlds without spending the energy necessary to forge a permanent gate to another world. If Elantaea is the center of creation, then Midway is the space between it and everything else; it is a link to anything and everything, if one knows the right door to go through. And it is meant quite literally when one says 'door.'

Midway is speculated to be infinite - no one knows exactly how large it is, but since creation is constantly expanding, so is it. It is a vast plain of grey skies and withering grass clustered with doors. Yes, doors - standing unconnected to anything physically, waiting to be opened. Each door leads to another world - where the gate opens depends on the world. Some worlds' doors will open wherever the user wants it to open; some are connected to specific gates. That said, some worlds have multiple gates constructed to connect to Midway - Elantaea, for example, has gates in each of the cities, as well as a gate at the lowest Isle. Earth, on the other hand, simply has a connection to Midway - someone who knows Earth's door can come out wherever he or she chooses. The 'door' will open quite literally out of thin air and spit out whatever's going through it. There is a problem with this though - not everyone who can pass through a door knows the secret to opening it again; those that do, however, can accomplish the same trick in reverse, opening a whole in whatever they desire (even thin air) and slipping through to Midway.

How one knows about a door can depend; perhaps they visited it themselves with someone else. Perhaps they've heard stories. Perhaps they read something in a book. However, so long as someone knows the appropriate door, it will appear to them eventually. Journeys in Midway are very much a journey of the mind; those locales closest to the one's mind who is traveling will show up first to them, while those that are not as well known will take longer to reach. There is another method of journeying, however - some have simply taken to opening random doors that they do not recognize - moving beyond the reach of their own consciousness in a way - and learning what lies beyond it. This, however, is not often recommended - the denizens of some worlds can be quite unfriendly, so to speak.

Eden's Contract is a rule of those of Elantaea created for balance; Midway is never to be used for any form of invasion. Whether other cities or other worlds, no armies may pass through - Midway is designed for individuals or small groups. No Elantaean may use Midway to gather information on another Elantaean who is his enemy. This means that there is no threat of spies and the like coming through the gates. Of course, there are other methods of teleportation, but those are perfectly viable. Eden's Contract is simply a way to keep total chaos from erupting thanks to a supposedly neutral ground.

Fighting and conflict in Midway are frowned upon, but it is rare that two enemies will meet in Midway unless they enter at the same time, due to its mercurial nature.

The Abyss

If the Isles of Elantaea are the highest point of existence, then the Abyss is the lowest. The Abyss is only accessible from Elantaea, and even then it is only accessible by House Lords. There is a reason for this - the Abyss is a place worse than nightmares - a place that makes the worst fears and terrors look like daydreams to the unprepared. It is a place of living shadow - a mockery of a mirror image of reality, where the lightest light is pitch black, and the darkest areas seem to be filled with nothingness. What is the Abyss? It is the embodiment of nothing. There are creatures there, creatures which can be infinitely useful if tamed, but there are few who can bring them about into servitude. Those that can have allies for life, however. There is little else to be said for it, however, except the fact that it is a desolate pit of despair and loathing that few wish to step foot into.

Other Worlds of Note

Earth: Earth is a notable world in that this is where humans exist, and thus would be recognizable to many reading this. Oddly, many Elantaeans do visit Earth, often in the guise of human skins, but not always. Many believe this is because of the number of gods that influence the planet and the level of technology present. The gods create an energy rich atmosphere for the Elantaeans, while the level of technology fascinates them, since humans do not (usually) use magic yet are extremely advanced in their ways. Many Elantaeans also use Earth as a center of recreation, since human development has left their societies similar to the settings in the cities that exist in Elantaea. Some believe this is because of direct intervention of Elantaeans on Earthlings; some of the most famous and notorious humans are rumored to have been Elantaeans in disguise.

Races of Elantaea

All of the races of Elantaea are considered Elantaeans; they are all born there, though many do not die there. The Elantaeans are, as a general rule, immortal when it comes to the concept of age - they grow to their prime and stay there for eternity. The concept of death from age was not something that spawned into creation until the lesser, mortal realms came into existence. This does not mean that they do not age, they simply do it in a different fashion, and they will not die from it.

From birth until their bodies reach their prime state - the peak physical performance 'age,' - they age quite quickly. More quickly than humans, generally. After that, the aging process stops entirely. However, some features of Elantaeans will often continue to grow, such as horns or some wings. This often makes ancient Elantaeans easily identifiable, unless they go out of their way to adjust such features. However, particularly among Monstros, such over exaggerated features are valued as marks of experience and status, particularly if the Elantaean is capable of handling the awkward features with grace. Other Elantaeans have no such feature - it is generally a random event, but those that have them generally appreciate them, at least until they begin to hamper their lives.

User Image

Angelicani

User Image

Angelicani are the 'good' of Elantaea, or were in the beginning. They still generally represent the dedicated, the noble, the pure and the innocent. These are often what people think of when they think of angels. Typical Angelicani are lightly coloured with few markings to speak of, and the markings they do have are either iridescent or pastel at the least. This doesn't mean that they are all almost-pure-white - there is a variety of colour woven through Angelicani blood. It simply happens that most of their skin tones are very high keyed tints of 'basic' colours. This makes them seem very pale to others, though they tend to view those same others as very dark or even gaudy at times. Wings are a commonality, though there are not many other 'features' that can be seen among them; a horn will manifest from time to time, generally in the form of a unicorn-like spiral, though this tends to be a rarity. Wings appear in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, however. Most are feathered, though some appear as flat shapes of harmless coloured energy. Anything from tiny wings on the head or ankles to a plethora of wings sprouting from the back have been seen, and not always in the same colours. Some are retractable, some are not.

Angelicani dress tends to be simple and functional. Robes and loose clothing are common. They generally cover a good portion of their bodies, leaving much to the imagination - they do not usually enjoy showing themselves off physically, no matter how beautiful they may be. The only exception is Angelicani armor, which can be quite extravagant and detailed, often covered with silver, gold, or even platinum embellishments and a wide variety of jewels. However, their armors are quite sturdy, and should not be taken simply as decorative or gaudy.

Angelicani run the gamut of personalities and dispositions, though most are quite gentle at heart. Many choose to devote themselves to gods and move to the godrealms to serve. Some are honest merchants in their cities, establishing trade and good relations with other cities. Some take a more forceful route, becoming paladin-like in their zeal and pursuing goals of purification and righteousness among both Elantaeans and mortals alike. Angelicani believe in love and devotion as some of the strongest powers available, and all believe themselves to be 'good,' though this is of course based on perception.

Angelicani are capable of 'falling from grace,' as it were. An Angelican can develop dark, twisted tastes - they are just as susceptible to such desires as any mortal, though they tend to have a much higher resolve against it. An Angelican that has chosen to shun his fellow kind and delve into the darker aspects of life is called a Fallen Angelican, and often moves to a Monstros city to live. Of course, whether or not he can survive is sometimes questionable, since the races have an intense dislike for each other. There have been Fallen that have survived and even risen to power, however.

The plural and adjective forms of this race name are "Angelicani." A singular is referred to as an "Angelican."

User Image

Monstros

User Image

Where Angelicani are the "good" of Elantaea, Monstros are the "evil." Monstros are often what people think of when they picture 'demons' or other kinds of humanoid monsters in the mortal world. Unlike their Angelicani counterparts on the continent, Monstros come in an extremely wide variety of shapes, sizes, and features. The only truly consistent fact is that they are all humanoid - though a few have come close to pushing the limit on this. As far as colouring goes, they are usually quite dark in their base skin tones, though some do have fairly bright skin. However, when compared to Angelicani, their flesh tones are always exceedingly dark. Their markings, on the other hand, can be any number of colours - oftentimes they aren't even one solid tint. The markings are much more pronounced and variable than Angelicani markings as well; as a Monstros grows in power, his or her markings will grow and expand with him or her. This means that there is potential for extremely light and colourful Monstros, and these are often the most revered or feared of their kind. It is very rare that a Monstros will be born with markings that are darker than his or her natural skin tone.

Monstros dress is often very different from city to city, and it is usually based on whatever features the Monstros in question has to work around. Tails, horns, wings, spikes, and extra limbs are just some of the factors that might go into determining what a Monstros will wear. As far as city differences, they can be surprisingly vast. One city may encourage dark, almost entirely covering dress, while another may care less if its inhabitants walk around nude. Of course, this will change from Lord to Lord, but since Monstros Lords tend to stay around for hundreds or even thousands of years, it isn't as though the 'accepted' norm changes all that often. Monstros armor can be quite plain for the general ranks, since the cities usually have some kind of standing armor, but the gear for high ranking Monstros and special sects is often custom made to represent something outstanding about those Monstros, and can be some of the most beautiful, if fiendish, armor ever created. Their weaponry is much the same.

No matter what they do, Monstros will generally like to consider themselves some form of "bad." Generally, they have perpetual mean streaks, with sadism and masochism being a common trait of almost all of them. This leads to a wide array of offensive sorcerers and budding warriors among their ranks. Monstros are surprisingly civilized, however - since their lascivious and cruel tastes are more a rule than an exception, they get along quite well with one another (in their own cities of course, as Monstros are usually surprisingly loyal to their homes). Shops and businesses are just as common as warrior's guilds and arcane universities, with everything from tailors and grocers to brothels and dark temples commonly seen. Love is a concept that is usually shunned and often not even believed in at all.

Like Angelicani, Monstros are capable of changing their nature, though this is much less common than having an Angelican fall. These Monstros are called Ascended Monstros, and unlike Fallen Angelicani, often have a hard time finding refuge in the homes of their former enemies. Ascended Monstros will usually either live with Muses, devote themselves to a god, or escape to a mortal realm to spread their 'enlightenment.'

The singular, plural, and adjective forms of the word are all "Monstros."

User Image

Muses

User Image

Muses are the "neutral" of Elantaea; they do not necessarily inspire others for a living, unlike their name implies. However, many have been known to take up this 'profession' simply because they can - unlike Monstros and Angelicani, they do not have refined, 'alignment' type magic, and instead have access to a purer strand of abilities. This makes them quite capable in the art of implanting ideas and making inspiration bloom in others, simply by their closeness to creation itself. Muses do not have cities, unlike Angelicani and Monstros, instead choosing to reside within proximity of either of those races, to live off the land alone or in small clans, or even travel to other worlds and live out much of their existence away from Elantaea.

The appearance of the Muses is the most widely varied of the three 'basic' Elantaeans. Unlike Angelicani and Monstros, there are no general rules that can be applied to them; while most of them are humanoid, there are enough taur-like or even fully bestial Muses that no real classification can be given to them. They may or may not have markings; their colours may be light or dark, extravagant or plain. There is often something ethereal about them, however, something that differentiates them from Monstros and Angelicani alike. They do not have the natural cruelty of Monstros nor the natural kindness of Angelicani. Muses are often thought of as being the first race on Elantaea, since they have not evolved or developed these inborn tendencies and are a relatively blank slate for impression and writing.

The singular of the race is "Muse," and the plural is "Muses." The adjective is "Muse" or "Muselike."

Inspirati and Faemer

<exampleimage>

Inspirati and Faemer are not necessarily related directly, but serve small enough roles that they are often lumped together into one category. These are the 'lesser' races of Elantaea; they are not quite animals, but they do not have civilization the likes of which the 'greater' have.

Inspirati are humanoid and usually have some kind of animalistic features about them; some have more, others have less. They usually have unusual and somewhat random markings and generally display them quite openly. Inspirati may wear jewelry, but they do not wear clothing because they do not have genitalia. Inspirati are instead born through others condensing parts of their own spirit into small jewels, which hold the larva soul until it is ready to appear. Some Inspirati gems even end up outside of Elantaea, binding themselves to mortal guardians until they are ready to return to Elantaea. This makes them the only Elantaeans born outside of the main realm. No one really knows the purpose of them; they generally have one main personality trait and rarely deviate from it. They do little but roam over the length of Elantaea. It has been rumored that they actually turn into the higher races through their own rebirth ritual, but the upper races refuse to believe this.

Faemer are another 'lesser' race of humanoid on Elantaea. They are generally childlike in their intelligence. Their appearance is usually quite plain, simple human shapes with pointed ears and the occasional set of wings. The special note about them is that they always glow - they are permanently lit with their own inner light. There are companies run by Monstros that work to harvest these poor creatures and enslave them as living lights for buildings and rich individuals.

The singular, plural, and adjective of these words is "Inspirati" and "Faemer."

Abyssals

User Image

Abyssals are, as expected, creatures from the Abyss. Their personalities are unknown, if they even have any at all. What is known is that they are cruel, wicked, and willing to carry out whatever orders their masters give them. Prior to 'taming,' an Abyssal is a fury unto itself, whipping around and fighting and carving out its own existence in the Abyss. Once tamed, the Abyssal instantly ceases its actions and follows its master and his or her orders until death. How an Abyssal dies is unknown - they simply disappear if they somehow manage to take enough damage to 'die,' though harming one is terribly difficult to begin with. Many believe the Abyssals never truly die, they simply return to the Abyss, considering their time of servitude over.

There are many shapes and sizes of Abyssal, many being humanoid but some being nothing more than shifting blots of nothingness. An Abyssal always appears to be perfectly flat, though one feeling it would be able to touch the shapes and curves of its body; the reason they appear to be flat is that their bodies absorb all light that hits them, making them appear to be quite literal walking shapes of nothingness. Not even shadows are so dark as an Abyssal. The only point of change on their bodies is their eyes, which are hauntingly white orbs set wherever their 'head' may be.

While Abyssals are ultimately loyal to their Lords, some believe they do have their own agendas, as they have free will and seem to be quite intelligent. When they speak, their words come out in voiceless whispers, making them almost silent. They have many abilities that they will not explain, such as melding through shadows and seeming teleportation. Their strength is uncanny, and they are often used as guards and personal assistants for the presiding Lord. Yet none will ever admit why it is that they serve the Lord, or even if they are truly loyal or not. Some skeptics believe the Abyssals are simply watching and waiting for a chance to attack and swarm onto the Isles, but there are few who actually trust this theory. Whatever the truth is, Abyssals are too useful for Monstros to pass up on utilizing; Angelicani will not use their services, considering them much too dark and evil.

While Abyssals know the Elantaean tongue, they have their own language that is considered the most foul and disgusting language in existence. It makes the ears of Elantaeans burn in shame, and has been known to drive mortals insane. There are not many Elantaeans who can speak this language, as it is hard to decipher from the Abyssal way of speaking - often it sounds like nothing more than hissing coming from them, yet it still burns to the core. Those who do know some have a powerful form of insult and cursing, however, able to shame and potentially physically harm their opponents with even simple words. Many high ranking Monstros know at least a few words in Abyssal, while it is said that some of the most powerful have learned all of it. Angelicani will, again, not participate in this language, since it is far too evil even for some Monstros, much less their noble tongues.

The singular and adjective of this race is "Abyssal." The plural is "Abyssals."

Gods

<exampleimage?>

What is there to say about a god that doesn't come along with the name? The gods are vast in number and power, reigning over countless mortal realms and fighting for control of what they can have, struggling to keep their positions as deities. They can look like what they wish, and while many have one certain form they stay in, many of them can seem quite alien to mortal eyes. This is simply the nature of the beast. Gods are not all powerful, instead reigning over two to three certain domains, though their mortal followers will generally believe they are all-powerful due to the innate manipulative nature of many gods. However, while not omnipotent, most gods are so powerful that no non-god could ever hope to challenge them.

General Roleplay Guidelines

As a rule, this shop does expect you to maintain a level of literacy in participating. This does not mean that you are required to write novels for each post, though you are certainly welcome to do so. What this does mean is that you are required to have a basic knowledge of the English language and how to use it. You are not expected to write like Melville or Poe, but you are expected to have some concept of sentence structure, grammar, and some spelling. Everyone makes mistakes - we are not complete grammar Nazis, and we won't bite your head off for every little thing. However, consistent misspellings and easily corrected errors, such as always writing "teh" or "taht" or misusing capitalization or punctuation constantly are not going to be tolerated. There are sure to be a fair number of people who will complain about us being elitist or unfair, but we are not - we are saving ourselves a great deal of headache. Deciphering barely readable posts is not something that we feel like dealing with.

That said, what level of literacy are we looking for? At least a paragraph per post in formal roleplay; writing four to five sentences is not difficult and allows for a reasonable amount of action and description. Writing more is perfectly acceptable, but remember, quality comes before quantity, always. We will generally roleplay in past tense, though this is not necessarily a rule. However, we expect you to understand the concept of tense - if you are writing in present tense, write in present tense for the entirety of the roleplay unless you are actually talking about something that happened in the past. Other than that, the only other thing is watching out for those little mistakes and actually seeming like you care about what you are writing. We love this shop and its concept very much, and would like it if the participants also had some level of care as well.

Now, once you are in the roleplay and have proven you can maintain the basic level of quality, it must be said that there are some guidelines to participation itself. If you are a casual player and only want to roleplay every now and again, say once every week or two, do not make your character attempt to attain a high rank or an important role in the main events of the shop. It hinders those who play more often. This doesn't mean your character cannot be important in the storyline - it just isn't recommended that you attempt to take large roles in metaplots or take control of characters such as Lords or their generals or advisors. It simply isn't fair to those that play every day or every other day.

When it comes to roleplay, do not godmode. This does not simply mean that you cannot make yourself stronger than everyone else; some characters will be stronger than others, after all. However, this does mean that you are not invincible, and you are not allowed to control someone else's character. You cannot assume how they will respond, and should not write as though you do. The only ones who may possibly bend such rules are the gods themselves, but those will only be given out to people that understand what is and is not appropriate 'god' power and will use it responsibly. So always remember not to do anything that you wouldn't want someone else to do to you - you cannot necessarily say whether someone will like or dislike something, whether that hit will or will not land, or if your opponent will or will not be knocked out. If all else fails and no agreed upon decision can be reached, dice are our friends.

Remember that we are quite open to your ideas and desires for plot and development. If you have a concept for a potentially large plot, go ahead and discuss it with one of the thread staff! Of course, little plots do not have to be run by us - but if you want to do something potentially world-shaking or something that would involve a lot of players, be sure to tell us. We're probably a lot more open than you think; we love plotlines, particularly intricate or well thought out ones, and we would love to let you play out your dreams. Don't want a bunch of other players too? That's fine - run us your idea anyway. We can't, and won't, stop anyone from joining, but we may be more than happy to let you start your plot on your own. Whether or not someone else can work their way into your story isn't up to us.

Always be considerate to your fellow players. What happens in roleplay stays in roleplay - you shouldn't hate someone because of something that someone did while in character. A character is not you; they are a separate entity, something entirely unique unto themselves. They have their own personalities and motives, their own histories and futures; a character is no more their player than YOU are their player. Remember this and try not to hold grudges against each other. We're all friends here, or at least we try to be. Usually.

Growth and Changes

'Growth' in this shop happens, just as it happens anywhere else. However, the methodology behind growth is a little different here due to the nature of the place itself. Creatures do not start as babies, nor do they end up as 'adult' or 'elder' stages. Growth here is more to depict changes in the character over time; new items, new scars, extended markings, pets - anything can possibly be integrated into 'growth' art. Of course, it is possible that the character has literally grown as well - training? Increased or more toned muscle mass. Quite the opposite is possible too; has your character done nothing but sit around and eat all day? I'm sure we'll see a little bit of pudge around the edges on him or her. Maybe you shouldn't apply for growth until they get off their rear and start to do something! Unless, of course, that's what you want in your character. It's all up to you.

There are no set number of stages; who knows how many you can possibly earn? It all depends on how active you are and how much you do with your character. However, you may ask, how can we keep track of such things? Journals aren't required here - even Gaia-based roleplay isn't required. You want to roleplay on AIM or YIM or MSN? Go for it! If enough people ask, we may even create an off-site forum for mature roleplay that cannot be done on-Gaia. So, again, how to keep track of it? Each person is required to post a short (no more than a paragraph) synopsis for every roleplay they do in a group activity log in the guild. This is not a journal - each person will not have their own activity log! It will be a one-thread activity, which will make it much simpler to keep track of how much you've been playing.

More detail will be available in the guild itself, of course. Feel free to peruse.

So when will you be able to apply for growth? Growth application periods will be open on even numbered months (such as June, August, etc) during the first week of the month. The staff will review and decide if anyone is eligible for a growth slot. Applications will not be accepted at all until a character has at least ten activity logs under his or her belt - this is not for the two month period, of course, but in general. Players will not be punished if they don't keep up this 'pace' - though it's hardly stressful - simply won't be allowed to apply for growth. There are no set number of slots that will be accepted for growth, as it is possible that the staff may not find anyone really eligible.

There must be a significant number of changes to a character or action in his or her life in order to warrant new artwork - as you may not really want to consider it 'growth' at all, depending on your perspective. Either way, you aren't going to get new art if all you've done is train and get a haircut. Sure, it may offer some physical change, but for the most part, your character will be essentially the same as he did before. However, if your character trained, got scarred in a major battle, had some of his armor damaged, purchased a new shield, and chopped off his hair in a symbolic gesture of his new dedication to his cause, this shows significant action and motivation in the character, as well as dedication on the player's part. Maybe he might look close to the same as before, with only a few (significant) physical changes, but it also shows that the player thinks about what the player does and has some interest in what is going on with him or her.

Flatsales and Writing Contests

Flatsales are going to be an extreme rarity in this shop. The artwork is all done by hand, unique for each character, so it's hard to come up with one set price for a character. The price will likely be somewhere around 25k, though it may be more based on the importance, complexity or customization of an available character, as there may be times when semi-customs will be available. However, for the most part, 25k is a good base price to expect from a sale. That said, a 'flatsale' at this shop will be more of a writing contest, as these are designed to be roleplay creatures and not something that you snag because you can post quickest then never come around again.

A flatsale will last generally a week, starting Monday and ending the following Monday at the same time. The prompt for the sale will be non-negotiable; if there is more than one you are free to choose, but if there is only one that is the one that you will have to use. There may be special guidelines imposed upon the writers to make it more of a challenge, and these will also have to be followed. The winner will be chosen by the staff of the shop and a potential unbiased judge. No whining or complaining will be tolerated.

There may be times when this setup is used with no price required, but this is going to be an exception as opposed to a rule. Those wanting a character would do well to participate in sales as opposed to waiting for some kind of contest, as Jadaria is an extremely greedy shopkeeper. If you do not have the gold immediately, payment plans can be worked out, or items may be accepted in lieu of actual gold.

Flatsale characters will never be part of Houses. They will have a background city and three abilities or talents assigned to them. They are of average skill when first obtained and should be played as such. They can, of course, gain power based on roleplay.

Free writing contest characters may or may not have something special about them, whether House membership or a special skill.

Auctions

Auctions are going to be the general method for gaining a character in this shop. Auctions will, of course, be just that - auctions. The rules for each will be posted here as well as in the thread in which the auction is taking place. Auctions will begin at 20k, which is 5k less than a flatsale price. Do not expect an autobuy, and if there is one, it will likely be set quite high, based on a quest or specific desire of the artist at that point in time. Auctions will last anywhere from one to two weeks.

Auction winners are still expected to roleplay, and are expected to do so at the same level as everyone else.

Auction characters will generally be some form of character of importance, power, or rank, whether a House member, a superior warrior, or someone with influence in more than one circle.

Customs

Customs - ah, customs. Customs are not something that will be handed out lightly. Customs imply a lot of hard work and a lack of artistic creativity on the artist's part, which means that there will be very few full customs available. What is a custom? It depends on the level of custom, of course - there are varying kinds. Some will be offered via auction, while others will only be available through a slot here. A slot will be very expensive though, regardless of the kind, that is certain.

The only way to get a custom when a slot is not open is to bribe Jadaria or do a pet trade. See the section on trades and bribes for more information.

Semi-Custom || <???k>
A semi-custom occurs when Jadaria has lineart, but can't quite decide how to colour it. When this happens, the buyer of the character will get to see the full lineart and decide what colours should be used. The buyer may suggest markings and other things, but the only guaranteed factor is what colours are used. All other design aspects are up to the artist herself.

{Available: Auction Only || Monstros, Angelican, Muse}

Full Custom || <???k>

A full custom occurs when a buyer gets to specify everything about a character, from design and colour to occupation and House. However, there are restrictions, even in a full custom. The character may have a rank, but he or she will not be an uber-character - s/he will not be a Lord, nor an overly powerful fighter. S/he may not have any powerful artifacts or game unbalancing abilities. The artist has the right to deny any requests; however, she will likely only deny those that are unreasonable - usually only text/game-related aspects, not artistic aspects.

Personality, history, and the like are required since you will be getting a character that will be roleplay ready as soon as you get it. This will also help in the art creating process with expression, posture, etc. Theoretical history can be written however you want - however, Jadaria has final say on what is and is not allowed. Not everyone can be the orphaned son of a great Lord, after all.

References are always better than text descriptions. A combination of both is joy.

Only normal Monstros, Angelicani, and Muses are available for a full custom.

Trades

As far as trades go, I'm going to be quite picky. I put a lot of work into these and I'm not going to want to give one out to someone who is either going to not play them or play them poorly. So before I even consider a trade, you must prove that you honestly want to participate and that you are literate. That doesn't mean that you have to write a prompt response - you can send me a roleplay sample or something of the like.

Also, I don't usually like RP-intensive pets. I have my hands full with this shop, my Eden, and my Tall Tale. Because yes, I have an Eden and a Tall Tale. Heh. Aren't I special. I should probably be updating for them instead of working here.

Anyway, there may be some RP heavy pets I'll be willing to trade for in the future, but for now I've just now come back to Gaia and I don't know what's available or what I want. However, if you have a shop that isn't RP-intensive and you want to trade one or more for one of my pets (depending on stages, artwork, etc) then I'll probably be willing, if I'm not swamped.

If trades are closed then they're closed, even to things on my wishlist. Sorry.

Trades

Open only to things in my wishlist.

Bribes

Ah, here's where the interesting bit pops up. See, Jada loves money. Jada loves money even if it's pixellated, otherwise she shouldn't be running this shop, now would she? So bribes are a big potential, aren't they? Bribes are anything where you get a character and she doesn't get a pet or art in return. This could be an item bribe, a pure gold bribe, a mix of the two, or even a real life commission. Whatever the case, Jadaria loves money. Deeply.

However, Jada also likes her creative freedom and her soul. So while she may love money, it will take quite a bit to enslave her to your every whim and desire. The more specific you are about what you want, the more it's going to take to motivate her. If all you want is some kind of character here, though...

...that's doable. Make an offer, go out on a limb. Just make sure you check what the current going price for one of these babies is - she's not going to take a bribe for LESS than she can get somewhere else, is she?

Bribes

Jadaria is: possibly, but not likely to be considering bribes.

The Thread Master

Name: T. Estepp
Nicknames: Jadaria, Jada, God, Jaxa
Age: 18 (as of 6-13-06)
Gender: Female
Comments: What is there to say about me? I left Gaia for a while, now I'm back. I can't live on here without being an artist, so I decided to bring back WtoW. It's my baby project, after all - it's been in development for years, literally. I really don't know how I've managed to retain all of it - I guess you create a world and it kind of sticks with you, though. It's really exciting to write it all down, and even more exciting to have other people participate in it. I couldn't have done it without Syrie, though, so I really have to give a big thank you to him. Love ye, foxbutt!

So, me? I'm an artist. Going into art major for college. That makes me happy. I graduated high school May 20th, 2006, so right now I'm still kind of testing my feet in the real world. It's thrilling, really, and I can't help but get a little antsy about it. Hey, everyone has to grow up sometime, right? Guess that this is my time to do it. Heh.

Or not.

Lessee. I like playing video games, writing, drawing, RPing, and being a general gamer and lazy a**. I know it's bad, but I can't help it. Gaia is an addiction, believe it or not, and I love lurking around and talking to my friends. I play Dungeons and Dragons on the weekends sometimes - actually, I play a variety of tabletop RPGs, but most people respond to "Dungeons and Dragons" quicker, heh. I like "retro gaming," though that phrase makes me kind of ill at my stomach. I'm not that damn old! I also like yaoi, particularly certain fanbased pairings. I post a lot of work on y!Gal - I'd post the link but it's not exactly a PG-13 site. If you know about it though, feel free to look me up. I shouldn't be hard to find.

Comments: Quit callin' me "Foxbutt" or I'll have you gutted. heart I'm Sy, one minion among many in the Army de Jadaria. I art. I emo about my art. I've been stalking Jada to reopen WtoW because I love the concept, love the characters, and well...with Jada I've logged way too many hours of RP to just let it die peacefully. I'm lucky and honored to have gotten to be a part of fleshing out the world, the NPCs, and so many other things. Many thanks to mah Mistress. ;3

I'm a hack. I skribble and dabble and that's all well and good. I enjoy every minute of my hackdom. I work full time at a commercial printer when I'm away from Gaia, and when I'm on Gaia, I do double time working for many shops. I co-own the Tall Tales, work for the Mozou, Dream Realm, Shounen; I guest for Star Dust Facility and the Yuniko to name a few. Believe me, It's a lot of work, and I get GRUMPY.

Artist. Writer. Gamer. Vitrolic Bibliophile (that means I'm cranky and like words). a*****e, First Class - Unlimited License. THIS MEANS I WILL EAT YOU IF YOU FSK UP IN THE THREAD. I hate l337 when used in seriousness, love vid-games and literate roleplay. I also love leetle boys, chai-tea, speaking Sy!speak, and tormenting newbs. :3

On the subject of why Earthbound rocks, Mouse Pachinkorelli

First, Jadaria condoned illegality and

http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/40711/snes/Earthbound-U.html
<-<;; ... >->;; ... Don't uh... keep it for more than 24 hours or whatever if you don't own the cartridge. Right. Yeah. <-< I think that's right. Unless they changed that. |D But uh... we all... >-> Own Earthbound. Yep. We just might not be able to play SNES right now. Yup. So computer. Uh-huh. Only choice. <-<

Mouse Pachinkorelli
No, Earthbound is just the best. Game. Ever. D:> There is so much in that game; you wouldn't believe.

Okay. Here I go.

Shigesato Itoi based the setting (and final boss) of Earthbound off of his childhood experiences. Eagleland is basically America- what he thought America was like when he was a kid, and what he wished America would be like. A place where you go home from walking your ever-loyal dog, and your mom cooks you your favorite meal and so on. Suburbia at its finest. Peaceful. Embracing. The white-picket-fence American dream, if you will.

I'll let you absorb that and make another point in my next post.

Mouse Pachinkorelli
Okay, next point, still on the Itoi's-childhood tangent:

When Shiggy (as I will hereby call him) was a kid, he spent a good amount of time being bedridden with illness. His main escape from this was the NES game Dragon Quest- he was so enraptured by the game that he would read aloud anything that showed up on the text box, and found that the game was much more enjoyable when he was giving voices to the characters. As such, in the manual to Mother 2 (as is what Earthbound is called over there, being the sequel to an NES number called Mother), you are encouraged to read aloud everything in the text box. The Eight Melodies have lyrics to them as well, and you're encouraged to sing along to that.

More to come, still. 8D

Mouse Pachinkorelli
Okay, now to the fun points. Beatles references!

The Beatles are heavily referenced in Earthbound... not only blatant things like the presence of a yellow submarine at one point, but bits of dialogue and the fact that a lot of the music is inspired by the Beatles, and even directly sampled in some cases. One of the default name sets you can pick is the name of the Beatles crew. There is probably a bunch of other stuff I failed to recognize, but let's move on...

If you have ever seen a movie called "The Blues Brothers"... well. That is one of Itoi's favorite movies, and it shows through blatant references that just plain kick a**.

Back to the naming thing: In traditional RPGs, you would name your character using four English letters... obviously, many Japanese (and American) kids took advantage of this by naming their character ********. So, you know what Itoi did? He made one of the default namesets for Ness and Paula Japanese slang words for "p***s" and "v****a", respectively. Because he knew that kids would do it anyway.

Mouse Pachinkorelli
Some people also suspect that the game references Gulliver's Travels, given the names of some of the Sanctuaries and just the general feel of the game... anywho, lessee what else I can remember!

I can't go into one of the most interesting parts without this being spoiler-free, so once you guys beat the game hit me up on AIM and I'll tell you about it. 83

All things said, the game has a lot of philosophy and things to think about; you just have to be willing to peer beneath the quirky, nontraditional surface. When you play the game, buy the $7500 house, store the bike with Tracy (DO NOT GIVE IT BACK TO THE BIKE SALESMAN.), and borrow money from the loan shark in the swamp. And be nice to monkeys.

It is interesting to note that Nintendo and Studio Ghibli have crossed paths a couple of times: not only does Mario 3 reference Pom Poko, but Itoi was a voice actor for the father in My Neighbor Totoro.

That's all I have for now; but I'm sure I'll remember more. x3

Jadaria
Syrie and I have discussed it, and we have decided that it is best to go ahead and put this up now, before anyone gets too deep into the shop. <3

All content in Welcome to Our World is copyright to Jadaria (T. Estepp) or Syrie (S. Zaire) with full intent of one day being compiled and published as an official gaming system. All persons who join this shop acknowledge that events pertaining to their characters may one day be used as "canon" for this published piece of work. No profit will be distributed for the use of these characters and events in the published work.

Basically, we're making this into a gaming book like Dungeons and Dragons, and we thought you guys deserved to know. We won't claim your characters as our own or anything, but we thought it would be a good idea to let you know that the events in the roleplay chronicle of this shop will be used as a timeline of sorts in our book. If you do something awesome, we'll probably reference you - like any good account of history would. And we're not giving you any money for it. XD<3

...welcome to our world... is (C) to Jadaria, aka T. Estepp. The shop was thought up way back in April '04, if we remember correctly. The original thread has long since died, and the concept has gone through several changes since then as it grows and evolves. It is still hers, however. All ideas, names, locations, etc in this shop are hers.

Banners and tags are (C) to Reivan.
