As you stroll through a certain section of the Barton Town suburbs on this pleasant afternoon, perhaps breaking from your grueling work to look for a bit of lunch, you might notice a strange tingling sensation on the back of your head. At first, it seems as if it might be merely the warmth of the gentle sun; but as you progress, it becomes more and more obviously something distinct, a feeling like little droplets falling softly on the top of your spine, fading now, then echoing again, brighter and louder than before. It's insistent, almost annoying - but at the same time so innocent and pleasant, it would seem cruel and heartless to shut it out.

As you round a corner, the sensation grows stronger, and at last you stumble across what must be its source; before you lies a small house, shabby but quaint, with an expansive yard full of scraggly yellow weeds. An awning of dull blue-green canvas hangs over the just-slightly-ajar door, with two letters written upon it in white paint; though they are not quite the same as the kanji you know, they resemble the characters for 'udon.' Hanging off the wall beside it is another sign reading 'Open.'

At a small wooden table nearby sit two humanoids of a species unfamiliar to you; small, slender, and white-pale, with tiny, delicate hands and wrists, hardly any noses and no ears to be seen, and strange, three-lidded eyes. They smile at one another, incline their heads, nod and gesture, and then lurch back in their seats, grinning, as those gentle, happy waves wash over you again. Though they make no sound, you somehow know that they are happy, ecstatic to see one another again, bursting with laughter -- and that, you realize, is the feeling you keep having, the silent sound of their psychic laughter.

As you realize this, the door of the house swings open wide, and a man emerges from behind the canvas flaps; tremendously tall, with an enormous mass of blue-green hair pinned up into a disorganized bun, he wears a set of faded blue robes in a fashion you have not seen before and carries a tray, bearing a bowl of steaming noodles.

When you first meet his light blue eyes, they widen a bit with surprise, and you seem to taste a hint of nervousness and embarrassment in the air... which then, as he smiles gently, turns to deference, respect, kindness, and welcome:

 sweatdrop You don't like writing. Of their own accord, the current players have been averaging 1,800 words per growth post (x 3 or more per stage.)

This shop is the reincarnation of a very old breedables shop. It is the meeting place of the Porcelain - a species of humanoid from another world, frail but naturally empathic beings who prize cooperation and kindness above all.

We've mostly been resurrected in order to service the players in the original shop, who may update their Porcelain and take advantage of the new shop's art and growth system. But new players are welcome to join in our roleplays and try for a Porcelain; we'd love to get to know you and to establish ties.

The Porcelain are very roleplay-intensive "pets" with a very detailed background. Many of our players might be what you could term "hardcore" ... but the attitude of this particular shop is somewhat casual, with practically no "activity" requirements. As the shop owner is anxious, lazy, and a flake, we've tried to design the shop to accommodate hiatuses for both the players and the owner.

If you love immersing yourself in an enormous, expansive story, crafting complex characters, playing with other casual but attentive roleplayers, and really bad art, perhaps this is the "breedable" for you.

How can I obtain a Porcelain character?


1. New players can "quest" for a Porcelain. If you post on the questers thread and roleplay with us a lot, you may be considered as a candidate for the roleplay whitelist -- meaning that you can request a new Porcelain flatsale-style from Setsushi or as a gift from another player.

2. Owners of Porcelain from the old shop can update each of their Porcelain for free. Most old owners will get approved.

3. If you already have a Porcelain, he or she can marry or adopt an NPC; the NPC will then become one of your Porcelain characters.

4. If you have two married opposite-sex Porcelain, or one of your Porcelain is married to someone else's Porcelain, they can have children.

5. There may be the occasional kooky roleplay contest or such, or Setsushi will give a whitelistee a new Porcelain as a semi-surprise.

How can't I obtain a Porcelain character?


1. We don't accept direct pet trades. Setsushi doesn't want pets; he's too irresponsible! Porcelain players are allowed to trade their Porcelain for pets, though.

2. There won't be any auctions or autobuys. We want to roleplay with fun people; we don't care about your gold at all.

Pricing and growth


As of 5/3/2009, Porcelain are free. Well, free gold-wise; you have to put in a lot of work to get approved. I also appreciate tips because it's a lot of work for me, too! XD New Porcelain are obtained by simply filling out and submitting a form.

If you've roleplayed your Porcelain enough and growths are open, you can send in an application to grow your Porcelain. If you're approved, you RP a growth retreat in your Porcelain's journal. You must go through this process every time you wish to grow your Porcelain.

Porcelain of his shop originally had fees attached; if you wish to be refunded you should PM Rika. 3nodding

Roleplay requirements


There is no "activity" requirement - you could drop off the face of the earth the day you receive your Porcelain, but he or she will never be taken from you. Feel free to take breaks whenever you like.

There is, however, a roleplay requirement for growths. You must roleplay your Porcelain "enough" in between growths, enough so that we feel your Porcelain has evolved mentally and emotionally and it makes sense for him or her to grow again. There is no particular post count or journal entry count requirement.

You must also roleplay "well enough." Your grammar doesn't have to be perfect, and every post need not be a brilliant novel; in fact, we're very one-liner-friendly around here, and we abuse emoticons. 3nodding But you must show care, sensitivity, creativity, and sportsmanship in your roleplays. Make your roleplays fun for everyone involved! If you're on the roleplay whitelist, you can be sure that your RP skills meet this requirement.

0. Porcelain is not that other shop. Do not assume that Porcelain's rules, guidelines, and customs are similar to other shops'. Read everything.
1. Setsushi and Imperial Princess Rika have final say in everything. While we try to involve the owners in the running of the shop, we reserve the right to be dictators once in a while.
1'. When Setsushi is not available, the shop lieutenants are empowered to make decisions via Rika.
2. Do not beg the players for Porcelain. You can beg Setsushi, but he probably won't give you one.
3. Be kind and respectful to everyone. Please don't whine, complain, or insult one another in the shop thread or guild.
4. Respect the Porcelain biology and backstory. You get lots of freedom with your own character's development, but don't change or make up stuff without permission. The fastest way to make Setsushi into an enraged, fire-breathing maniac is to claim you know Porcelain better than he does.
4'. Although it's draconian, players and hopefuls must read the whole Guide to ensure that no one signs up who would not actually want to play.
5. Don't mess up the guild! And don't post in player journals without permission.
6. Be a responsible Gaian, and follow all TOS and Minishops/Breedables rules. No art theft or other funnybusiness.
7. Be a responsible roleplayer. We endorse the Daisy Code, though our shop has no activity requirement.

8. Some of the ancients available are based on characters from my game, Moon's Apologia. I would like to retain the copyright to these characters' original appearances, personalities, and backstories, so that I can, y'know, keep them in Apologia. However, when you receive a character, you can reinvent and develop her in any direction you please, and this Gaian incarnation of the character is considered to be yours.

Since the arrival of Rika and the launch of her land-purchasing scheme, a little Porcelain neighborhood of sorts has begun to spring up around Setsushi's house and udon-ya in Barton, just off the Mini Shops district. At present, Setsushi and Rika live in the "Udon-Ya," while Tenkyuu, Tenryuu, and Ryoua have been invited to live in the two-story "Ten House" and Kouyo has received his own residence across the street from Setsushi, the "Kou House". Next to Kouyo's house is Hitsuga's perfumery, and next to Tenkyuu's house is Oukou's tailoring boutique.

To the other side of Kouyo's house is a small lot, consisting mostly of yard, with a small covered shrine at the center. A few of the gods of the Porcelain are honored by tiny altars there.

Setushi's tiny house -- three rooms, with one main room, a bathroom, and an attic -- has been partially converted to an udon-ya. At present, it is only open for lunch; Setsushi works at the Jejune June Cafe in the mornings and occasionally in the evenings. However, Setsushi's Porcelain friends often stop by to chat at other hours; their habit is enabled by Setsushi's tendency not to lock the doors at all. [ more details ... ]

This shop is run primarily by Setsushi. If you need to distinguish him from the in-character Porcelain Setsushi, you can also call him Wen, Tsu, Wenwen, Tsutsu, Tsujiji, Tsubaba, Isaac, or Kuro/i. You can also refer to him with any gender pronoun and he'll probably respond. 4laugh

The shop lieutenants (at this time Asahi Kumoru, karma_k, and Junyi) provide support and may sometimes log in to Imperial Princess Rika to do kooky things. They can field your questions, especially when Setsushi is hiatused or just not around.
