          It was a motto that eight people decided to make true. Brought together by one man, they had a means and the will, and it happened.

          Within four years the superhero team that the papers dubbed 'The Authority' had made people believe the streets were safe to walk at night. The mob influences were fading. 2010 was marked as a year to remember. No one thought everything could go backwards from then, or as fast as it did.

          At the height of their influence, The Authority crumbled. No one knew what happened, but one day they just stopped saving people. The social experiment was over. It took only a matter of months for criminals to get their nerve back. Five years after The Authority had first appeared, there was barely a sign of them left.

          Seven years have passed since they disbanded. Superheroes who tried to fill the gap that was left by the team have failed. Tales of the eight have already become more known as characters from a blockbuster hit than the real team that for a moment made the city felt safe. Everything is starting to be brought up again as a major publisher is boasting that they are set to release a tell all book written by one of The Authority and reveal their secrets to the world.


          The members of the team have not met since they gave up their double lives all those years ago. In light of the recent threat to their privacy, their former leader has called them together to find out who is behind the leak and perhaps reconcile past differences. That, however, is a lot easier said than done.

          №|1 ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀᴄʏ
            This is a lazy advanced literate roleplay. If your post does not contribute enough to the RP and/or it is littered with spelling and grammar mistakes, I will ask you to change it. Stick to '500 words for a good post', but don't go over 2000 words unless you have some justification. I find that 150 words is an absolute minimum.

          №|2 ᴇᴛɪǫuᴇᴛᴛᴇ
            Be nice to your fellow members. While in character, you can have your characters going at each other's throats - as that is partly the point - but be polite in the out of character chats.

            Through this RP, I expect there will be moments where it makes sense for characters to break away to talk to each other. That is perfectly acceptable and I expect everyone to read those posts as well, but if another character tries to interact, don't ignore them. Interruptions make everything more juicy.

            It also stands to reason that we don't want people controlling each other's characters without consent. A small amount of power playing may be allowed in certain scenarios, but go with your gut instinct on when to use it or not.

          №|3 ᴀᴘᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪoɴs
            This is a mature roleplay, as shown by the median age of the main team being in the mid-thirties. Later on, younger characters will be allowed to join the team. The new members will be: two 18-20, three 21-29, three 30-40, infinite 40+.

            Photographs only for the characters. If you are having trouble finding one, send in a reserve without it but have it there for the profile. I have provided suggestions for people you could use but the picture can be changed. Also, big thing, don't stretch the picture!

            Speaking of reserves, include a writing sample when you PM me them. Any creative writing will do, e.g. something in character so I can sense your style (I will reject you if you use 'the fe/male' for anything, so I'd make sure not to send an example with it or use it in the RP). Also, tell me why your character has their alias - the media named them, so make it fairly obvious.

            Once I accept a reserve, I will give you 2 days to make the profile, which will also be subject to rigorous scrutiny. This is not first come first served. If you push 2 days, I will take your reserve down unless if no one else has applied.

          №|4 ᴘosᴛɪɴɢ
            There are only a handful of things I expect from you: don't use a size below 10, include a name, don't use hard to see colours and post at least every third day. It's nothing to strenuous, I hope. The only other restriction I will enforce is not making your posting style obnoxiously large. Do not make your layout more than 900 px in width, and do not use more than 20 lists (so if you have graphics on the sides, they can not be larger than ≈280px altogether). I will not hesitate to ask you to change your posting style if it breaches these requirements.

                                                                Tomek [ sᴏʟᴀʀ ] Vaine
                                                            The man who came up with the idea. With the out of control escalation of organised crime syndicates in the city and a young daughter he didn't want turning into a victim, Tomek tried to find a way to bridge the gap between official bureaucracy and mindless vigilantism. The result was the creation of The Authority.

                                                            Though he would confess to being narrow-minded, he still believes that he was right in trying to run the team as another law enforcement unit, instead of judge, jury and executioner. He insisted that it was their role only to help deliver the offenders to the correct authorities. There was no justice to be delivered by eight nighttime heroes.

                                                                Lucette [ ᴀᴜʀɪᴄᴀ ] Pereira
                                                            Playing the role of a visionary mogul had forever been in Lucette’s lineage; even her powers were hereditary. Although prone to all manner of vanity, Lucette found the most sanction in her connections and serving the people. She went to law school, where she met Tomek, and eventually developed a sisterhood with Clara. When the idea of The Authority arose, she was more than happy to become financial administrator.

                                                            Transforming The Authority into a haven for gifted individuals seeking to benefit humanity was Lucette’s top priority. After all, strength was in numbers, and to get word out of their cause seemed only a necessary course of action. But then Clara’s death made headlines, and any influence The Authority had was thus tarnished. The loss of her best friend and subsequent detachment she felt from Tomek changed something in her. She grew disinterested in the team and began focusing on more selfish endeavours, like politics and becoming mayor. Currently, Lucette is running a doomed campaign for governor, apparently having forgotten all about being a superhero.

                                                                Emilia [ ѕᴘᴇᴇᴅ ] Yeung
                                                            Police integration with The Authority was questionable, but Emilia stepped up to the plate to get it done. A young, fresh-faced lieutenant in Brighton's police force, the gifted police officer nearly leapt at the opportunity to join to group, seeing it as a way to further help keep dirty criminals from ever tainting their city. She believed she had potential and with good leadership, anything was possible.

                                                            Emilia felt more jaded as the years passed, seeing criminal after criminal appear, even with The Authority's looming stance over the city. Police work and vigilante work combined, Emilia saw things that darkened her perspective of a bright world. With Clara's death, things came hard to port and with Tomek defending criminals, Emilia saw no point in staying in a group that was falling apart. So, she left.

                                                            Being the youngest member in the team, Spectre found it rather hard to prove to others she was useful. Before the split, she wanted to see how the team could function together; and be there for each other. She wanted to prove that not all people her age made only rash choices and poor judgement on things.

                                                            She hated the fact that, the only real reason she made it on the team was that she was the means of transportation for everyone. She felt that no one in the Authority respected her, or took her seriously. Everyone but Clara. The woman truly lived up to her name. She was the sticky goo that held everyone together, and encouraged Spectre to keep trying. She became, to what Delwyn would see as a mother figure. Being deprived of one majority of her life, it took a huge toll on her when the lady passed away, Delwyn found herself unable to cope with the loss, and broke off when everyone was starting too.

                                                                Barry [ ᴛᴀɴк ] Wirth
                                                            There was little to no persuasion needed for Barry to agree to join. Offered the chance to get back at the people who tried to put him away for life, he would never pass up the opportunity. It all just worked out nicely that he was always Tomek's poster boy for reform and the only one he trusted to tell the team about the kinds of goings on in the gangs.

                                                            The promise that he could get revenge on those who wronged him was Barry's primary motivation for staying on the team. Every time they went out on a mission, that promise felt broken. They never did anything more than give the guys a bit of shock before letting the cops deal with it. Tomek had told him that the system had failed him and now he was supposed to rely on it. That wasn't justice: that was a waste of time.

                                                                Clara [ ʙʟᴀᴄк ᴀɴɢᴇʟ ] Vaine
                                                            The last member of The Authority. She was Tomek's wife and a beloved member of the team. No one asked her to be the peacekeeper, but no one was surprised that she took on the role. Her death was the catalyst for the disbandment. Resentment, tension and anger that had previously been mediated by a few gentle words erupted amongst the team and only a few weeks after the funeral, The Authority finally called it quits.

          Brighton*, the home of The Authority, is a fictional city in an unnamed western country. The city has the highest rates of organised crime in the country. Homicide clearing rates are abysmally low and generally gang related. These figures dropped dramatically while the team was in power, but have shot back up since they split.

           tab *Red zone has the highest rates of crime, public housing and mob influence. Blue zone is the CBD. Yellow zone is industrial. The black dot is where the team's headquarters is.

          There is free universal healthcare; school is mainly split into primary and secondary/high school; tertiary education is partially subsidised by the government; and people with superpowers are still generally shunned because the general population links powers with crime.

          For laws: there are strict anti-association laws that can prohibit people from contacting certain groups, carrying a weapon (e.g. firearm, knife) in a public place is illegal unless required for work, prostitution is decriminalised, legal drinking age is eighteen. These did not cause an increase in organised crime rates.

          The team all had one thing in common: they wanted to do something about the crime in the city. They were vocal about it and prepared to do something about it. Aware of their abilities, Tomek recruited them for the chance to act on their beliefs.

           tab There were no flash costumes. The team would go around wearing whatever was practical [if one of the team felt like designing a sensible uniform, that can be up to someone to describe who is not me].

          The headquarters for the team was donated by the second-in-command. The old apartment building is in the heart of downtown Brighton with panoramic views of the city from the 14th floor. The apartments below also provided a place to stay for anyone too exhausted to return home after a night out.

          The year is 2017 so there has been some minor technological advancements that you can bring in, but don't go overboard. I do not want it to feature much in the RP, though, unless if the technopath's character has made something.

          The Authority didn't become a media sensation without everyone coming up with their own rumours. Everyone wanted to have their own juicy bit of gossip to say about the superhero celebrities. Different media had different things to say, but one thing was for sure: no one on the team was free of the buzz. This is where all the popular representations and misrepresentations of the team get a brief overview.

          Supervillains as we know them don't exist (or, at least not yet). There are criminals with superhero powers, but they still bear the stigma of being supers regardless of their context so they will not be likely to show off their powers. Powers that can be explained away, such as Barry's super strength, would attract little stigma, however, showing off other powers, such elemental control, would still make them outcasts

          There obviously are other super-abled people in Brighton. They aren't all that common, though. The city has 8 million people, only about 50,000 of them will have powers to some extent. Some of those powers will be unimpressive (being able to accurately predict the weather) or the limitations and drawbacks of their powers will be so large any benefits will be significantly masked. Therefore, the portion of truly superpeople is even lower than 50,000.

          If you have a character who's from the original team, you can also create a new recruit. You cannot, however, have two new recruits. This is to keep the roleplay still at a generally smaller size and to make sure other roleplayers aren't disadvantaged if they want to join.

        It is the 18th of June, 2017. It's a typical Brighton summer's day; scattered showers throughout the day, a fresh south-westerly wind is coming in off the sea. Temperatures range from 60℉ (15℃) through the night to a high of 80℉ (27℃) in the day. Sunrise is at 5:30am, sunset at 8:30pm.
