- ✗ BURY WHAT YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ WHATEVER YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ BURY IT DOWN DEEP
The Mermaid isn't where good people find themselves, not for a drink, not to ask for directions, not to get out of the cold. Out of all the bars, in all the towns, in all the world, this is not the one anyone will walk into. Everyone who goes there goes there for a reason, most of them without a respected reason. They go to The Mermaid because they don't want to be seen by good people. Good people don't belong in this neighbourhood so for the punters, that makes it safe.
Last night the usual ensemble was nestled behind the antique tables: drunks slouched over their drinks, too caught up in themselves to watch the television mounted on the wall or pay attention to anyone else. The rest went about their business. The Actress, the Senator, the Prostitute and Mickey Silverman himself, the millionaire property developer cleaner than a saint, came through the door of The Mermaid hoping that there wouldn't be any trouble. They had all been there before, some more than others, each for their own reasons, and there had never been a problem. The Bartender didn't ask questions, the Bouncer was only there to do their job should there be any disturbances. In the well oiled machine that was The Mermaid, there was the guarantee that nothing would ever go wrong.
At three in the morning the guarantee was broken. Mickey Silverman was dead. The man who inspired a documentary about his rise to the top, who was the cornerstone in reviving the city's rotting districts, was stabbed in the alley by the bar, barely visible in the dim light of the flickering street lamp. Standing over him was the Actress, still holding the knife. It was a crime that only belonged to her. It turned into more.
The Senator had heard the struggle and saw the Actress kill Silverman. Instead of calling the police, he rushed to the Actress' aid. A friend he wasn't going to let go to prison, the Senator helped the Actress clear up the mess. The Prostitute, as always having left the bar with the Senator, had the chance to leave without getting involved in the mess, but this was finally their chance to get back at Silverman and they wouldn't pass that chance up for the world. The Bouncer, late to the commotion, accepted the bribe to wipe the security footage before they knew what had happened. That would have been the end of it if the Bartender hadn't tried to stop the Bouncer. They were going to call the whole thing in and hand everyone over. Everyone was too involved by then to let that happen. Blackmailed into a choice between losing the bar and their livelihood, or reporting the crime, the Bartender took the bribe. No one noticed the Alcoholic until they tried to dump the body in the river. The Alcoholic had seen the incident from further down the alley. Blind drunk, they could barely understand what they had seen. Once they were calmed out of a panic, they swore not to tell anyone about that night, or what they could remember of it by the morning. The Senator promised to make it go away within twenty-four hours by whatever means possible. Everyone hopes it will be that easy.
Good people wouldn't have come to The Mermaid, but in this city, who's to say who the good people really are?

As though it isn't obvious: Respect your fellow roleplayer. Chat to people in the OOC, discuss plot ideas with everyone else and stay active. If the OOC dies, the RP is as good as dead too, so make sure you're on the ball because it's going to be hard to replace people. Other than that, you can have your characters be a bit unfriendly, not politically correct and such as long as it's within TOS standards. Elaborate posting layouts to go along with the post are not required and over-elaborate posting layouts are frowned upon so don't have a dozen pictures and sparkling text. Only requirements are make sure the font is no smaller than 11 for the body of the text and don't change the text alignment. If you have any queries, leave a message in the OOC or send me a PM.

This was designed to be a lazy literate roleplay. Know the difference between its and it's, and apart from a part, and so forth. The amount I would want you to post is at least 300 words. If you can't meet that requirement for any reason, chat with some other players in the OOC for ideas or use the NPCs. There is more than enough room to send this roleplay in whichever direction people would like, so mutually agreed timeskips may help you out as well. To keep things moving, try to post as soon as possible after you have a post to respond to. I am not going to specify a certain number of days, because working full time myself, I understand that any specified number may not be feasible.

Send a PM with the reserve titled the role you want. The pictures you send can be any size as long as they are greater than 240x200. I will need to adjust them later anyway. If, however, you want to make the adjustments yourself to fit in the style of the other pictures, go ahead.
There is a choice for the profiles. Under the 'Statement' section, either write out a hypothetical transcript with the detectives where your character told the truth (keeping more in the theme of the roleplay) or just standard third person prose covering of events as you would in any other profile. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to contact me.

None of the characters have a preset gender. When making a character, stick to the details already provided (contact me first if you have an idea how to rewrite any of the characters). The minimum age is a cap, it is not the suggested age, and does cater for characters over forty (shock horror, I know). Depending on the ages of the characters that apply, I may start increasing the age cap. Try to base your characters off someone you know to stop them from becoming a cardboard cutout. When choosing your pictures also keep in mind your character's role to decide what is appropriate. Do your best to find a model or actor who is not constantly used. If there is a problem, you may be asked to change something. As a side not to the name, I know some people don't have middle names, so I will allow a couple of characters to not have one.
It is possible to take one of the NPCs if you want, but only as a secondary character. You will have the freedom to alter them as long as you stick to the role and status for each. These characters are important to the plot but will not feature as strongly as the main cast. You are, however, completely free to create NPCs as required if you feel they need their own special mention. Just send me a reserve form as usual with the NPC.
Rules may be altered as required.

- ✗ BURY WHAT YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ WHATEVER YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ BURY IT DOWN DEEP

Set in an unnamed Western country, Brighton is the country's second largest city. Once an industrial hub, it has become a world class service provider. Its large and growing middle class is attracting people from everywhere for their own chance to join in on Brighton's boom. The Birrie River that flows through the city is a major tourist attraction. The foreshore is dominated by businesses, from high class restaurants and retail outlets in Riverview, Brighton's ritzy north, to cheap clubs converted from warehouses in South Brighton, to the chic cafés in Brighton's restored outskirts, Condell Park.

Formerly the home to Brighton's tradesmen, South Brighton has become the city's no-go zone. Police are rarely seen patrolling the streets during the day and are nowhere in sight after dark. With the disappearance of the industrial sector and the monolithic public housing estates peppering the neighbourhood, the unemployment rate and number of youth in this part of the city is unprecedented. Most of Silverman's community programs operate out of this district and it was not uncommon to see him in the neighbourhood inspecting his charities.
It was on the border of South Brighton and Condell Park that the police found Silverman's body. While the business influence of the CBD to the north can hardly be seen, Condell Park's expansion has started cleaning up the suburb. The rebuilt foreshore has caught more than just one body floating down the Birrie in the past few months.

A pub the neighbourhood outgrew. This relic of South Brighton's more prosperous past was the riverside bar that attracted the band of suspects. Still boasting an antiquated feel, its primary clients are the better respected members of society doing less savoury things and drunks not wanting to be disturbed. No one is going to badger the punters here. The rooms upstairs are for those seeking a bit more privacy; the basement, except for keeping the excess stock, holds the hub that all the security cameras feed in to.
Unpoliced and unregulated, the only thing keeping law and order at The Mermaid are the bouncers. Emergency services will either arrive forty minutes after the call or won't come at all. No taxis come to pick up the punters and the closest bus stop is a twenty minutes walk away, the train station even further. The dark alley beside the bar is a quick thoroughfare to South Brighton's main road, but it's not recommended at the best of times. The dozens of alcoves along the alley can hide any number of junkies and crooks ready to steal your money. At a run, it is possible to make it from the foreshore to the road in a little under a minute. If nothing happens in that minute, buying a lottery ticket may be the best way of exploiting that streak of good luck.

Extra area descriptions will be added on request. All pictures are linked to larger images.

Each character's view of the relationship doesn't have to be the same. The relationship section is designed to be how each character acts to the other, more so than how the overall relationship would be defined.
Some of the combinations do not allow for no relationship as I'm hoping it will join the characters together to move the plot forward and/or it just makes sense for those characters to know each other enough to have set up some kind of relationship. Whatever response you give will obviously be an oversimplified consideration of the way the characters would interact, and it is open to change. These characters are in a stressful environment, so the relationships could easily start changing.

✗ BURY WHAT YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ WHATEVER YOU'VE DONE tab tab ✗ BURY IT DOWN DEEP

Mickey Silverman's body was spotted downriver at seven this morning. A card to The Mermaid was found on his body at seven fifty when he was fished out of the water. At twenty past eight, the two detectives, part of the dozen detectives assigned to the case, questioned the Bartender about the incident. Scared that someone else who had been at the at the bar that night would give the police the truth, the Bartender told the two the names of everyone who had come into the bar, including the culprits. There was no mention of the death. Everyone has since been questioned either by the detectives or a uniformed officer. Unlimited resources seem to have been dedicated for solving this case, including by the media, leaving the journalist doing her own snooping around. Now that this motley crew on the list of the police suspects, the adrenaline rush and courage of the night before is starting to fade.
