Scam

Dear Gaia User,

It has come to our attention that you have shown your e-mail address
on Gaia. You might not know of this, but a new rule has been passed down the
Gaia site. Because of the recent increase in hackers and scammers on the
site it is not allowed to give out any personal information( including your
e-mail address) to anyone else on the site. For safety issues and to make
sure this account on Gaia is yours, we will need you to fill out the
following information below and send it back to us as soon as possible.

Gaia Username-

Gaia Password-

Names of Friends on Gaia(if any)-

We will need the above information to verify if the account is yours. If this
information is not sent back to us via
e-mail, we will be forced to shut down or ban your Gaiaonline account for
safety. Sorry for the inconvinence.

Sincerely,
The Gaia Online Staff

Are you tired of recieving scam emails from other users on the site claiming to be Gaia Administrators? Have you been lied to as to the reason why they need your password? Have you ever wondered "Gee, I wish there was a way to get rid of them" ? Well, look no further! Most of the scams are sent to us through email, sometimes instant messaging programs. We're going to mostly deal with the email portion of it. I will go through step by step on how to report an email account. Lets get started!

Reporting with Hotmail

Alright, I havent tested everything out when reporting another email provider, but I do know that if you HAVE a hotmail account and you've recieved an email on that account from another HOTMAIL user, you'll be able to follow these steps.

Here we go!

1. When you first read the email, DO NOT RESPOND! At the top right hand corner, you'll see Options, click on it!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/heatherl0l/display.jpg
2. Go ahead and click on the option thats the second down called Mail Display Settings.
3. Now, look for an option called Message Headers. This will let you choose how much of the person's information, thats sending you an email, you want to see. You're going to choose FULL. Now, at the bottom, click on "OK".
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/heatherl0l/display2.jpg
4. Now that you see all of the top information, go back to the original scammer's email. Click on the forward button and in the address, type abuse@hotmail.com and be sure to advise to the person reading this exactly why you are reporting it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/heatherl0l/display3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/heatherl0l/display4.jpg
5. Click send and in a few minutes you'll be recieving a default repsonse letting you know that your email has been recieved. You will have a person physically reponding to your letter within 3 business days and letting you know what action will be taken.

Reporting with Yahoo

If you are recieving mail from ANY yahoo account claiming to be a Gaian Administrator, they have an advised system for dealing with accounts that are "phishing" scams (Trying to gain account information). You can do this no matter what email provider YOU have.

Watch Out!

1. Open the original scam email and forward it to mail-spoof@cc.yahoo-inc.com and make sure to give a brief discription on why you are reporting it. Yahoo will then take action if they feel it is neccessary. They suggest to also report any and all "phishing" scams to spam@uce.gov

Reporting GMAIL accounts

After surfing the site for a few minutes, I have found the area that you need to go in order to report a GMail account. Follow the link and pay close attention to the example picture I've given

ANTI-SCAMMERS!

1. This will work regardless of you having a GMAIL account or not. Please go to http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/request.py and at the bottom of the page, you will see:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/heatherl0l/display7.jpg
2. After clicking on "Continue" they will ask you to fill out some information about yourself. In the Questions/Details portion, please copy and paste the detailed email you've recieved which must include the scammer's email account, your email account, the subject and the body (main portion of the email)
3. When you've clicked "Submit" you'll be recieving an automated response and someone will look into your case within the next week.

How to Report All Others

bactine
It has come to my attention.

After having a slight problem with a user over AIM, I was able to find out how to get ahold of someone. I emailed AIMPrvcyPolicy@aol.com about the situation. However, they do not help out with people harrassing me. I was pretty much told that if I have a problem with someone, to block them. You might be able to message this email address for scammers, though.

Email Recieved
As I am sure you can appreciate, AOL takes online privacy very seriously. If you believe you are receiving credible threats through AOL or AIM, please contact your local law enforcement office. If the messages you are receiving are harassing in nature, please utilize the Privacy Controls within the AIM software to allow only specified screen names to send you messages.

Visit the Get Help section of AIM.com for more information.

Regards,
AOL Privacy Team

For all other email addresses you recieve spam from, there is a nifty little website that will take LEGAL action against anyone who is password scamming you. This is the Consumer Complaint department of the United States Government. Its best to just forward the email to spam@uce.gov or if it is litterally asking for your password, send it to uce@ftc.gov unless you would like to take the long way which I have also provided below.
Yes, you will have to provide ALOT of information about yourself and as much information as you can about the scammer. Under the area "Subject of your Complaint" please select "Privacy" or "Computers/Internet Services" and be sure to give as much information as you possibly can.
https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01
Also, there is another website that businesses are asking their members/customers to visit: http://ispcon.blogs.com/ispcon/2004/08/spamucegov.html
