The orange/black egg sat nestled in the blanket behind the big old desk of the library. The tohopka inside felt warm and secure as it had from the moment Pixie had placed it there, murmuring reassurances to the egg as she made sure it was cosy and safe.

The purple/blue egg sensed a difference in its location. The tohopka inside was not developed enough yet to feel fear or worry. It didn't in fact even experience any curiosity as to where it had been or where it was now. It merely pulsed gently inside its eggy home, knowing it was somewhere new but concerned not for the significance of this.

Struggling out of the shell, the newborn tohopka shook the last of the shell off its tail and looked up at its guardian. "Pixie!" she said to herself inside her head. So that's what my guardian looks like.

Sensing her guardian's hesitancy, the tohopka nuzzled up to Pixie which seemed to help.

Once given the name Monarch, the tohopka felt quite pleased. The name felt right and she felt quite at home here in this big old library which her guardian looked after.

Hmm, I think I will have fun here. And she followed Pixie off to the kitchen, stumbling at first on her very young legs.

Monarch was getting more steady on her new legs already. She followed closely behind Pixie, glancing at the other tohopka who were visiting the library.

Hmm, I think they are of my kind. They're rather boisterous. But they look like they're having fun.

She did not have enough confidence just yet to join them in their game. But there would be plenty of time for fun and games. She had just entered this world.

The other egg shivered and although not noticeable to Pixie, it was getting very hot.

Pixie checked on the purple egg again. It seemed to be throbbing and to touch it you could almost burn yourself.

Monarch lay staring at the egg, head on her paws, whimpering and occasionally looking over at Pixie.

Suddenly the purple egg started trembling quite noticeably. Nothing appeared to be hatching though and Pixie grew more worried by the second. In fact it was only seconds ticking by, but it felt more like minutes, lots of minutes, to Pixie.

Monarch whimpered some more, then leapt up and appeared to be excited.

Pixie figured Monarch must know something she didn't because there seemed to be nothing happening as far as she could tell.

Then a large crack drove itself right across the top of the egg, splitting into finer cracks leading off in all directions.

"Oh!" exclaimed Pixie. She knew she should be relieved something was now happening but she was still anxious.

Monarch ran around in circles.

Pixie fussed that Monarch would cause an accident.

And while the two of them got tangled up in each other, the new deeply purple tohopka emerged rather abruptly from the shell.

Spinning around, Pixie couldn't believe her eyes. The beauty of the tohopka creatures never ceased to amaze her. Losing her shock just a bit more quickly than last time, she grabbed a blanket and approached the tohopka slowly and tenderly.

The tohopka sat enjoying the towelling off and began nuzzling at Pixie for more attention.

Monarch whimpered some more, feeling left out.

"Now, now, I haven't forgotten you. You are both my special babies."

Pixie decided to name the new tohopka "Indigo" to which both the tohopka seemed pleased.

Indigo showed much more confidence than Monarch had at such an early age. With visitors to the library, Indigo padded right up to the tohopka pair and looked at them quizzically. Expecting some fun, she waited to see what they would get up to next after knocking their sibling's egg onto the floor.

Indigo did indeed show more confidence much sooner than Monarch. Although she was perhaps a little overconfident, expecting she could do everything straight away. She would soon realise her legs needed just a bit of time to get used to walking before she could race around like other tohopka.

Monarch was becoming more curious about her surroundings and the behaviour of others. She didn't need to cling to Pixie's side anymore but still liked to know she was not far away.

Pixie found a third egg, cobalt blue in colour and Cobalt by name, on the doorstep of the library, tucked into a blanket with a note inside saying "My name is Cobalt. Please look after me." There was a certain golden glow to the egg, like some sort of aura.

Indigo didn't take much notice of the new egg. It was no fun until it hatched. She was enjoying getting to know what was in the library and trying to get the attention of any visitors to the library. The world was full of possibilities and she wanted to explore everything.

Monarch liked this place she had been born into and was so glad Pixie was her guardian. The library seemed such a nice place to live in with the towering bookshelves and the funny visitors.

Cobalt wriggled inside his egg. He sensed he had been moved to a different location but unlike before, he sensed no danger now. Thank goodness he sighed, he could just rest until it was his time to emerge. He didn't like all the jitteriness of the place he had been in before, all that stress he could feel surrounding him by those trying to protect him and the other eggs. This place felt quite secure and friendly.

Monarch wondered what her sister was up to and went off to see what fun she might have discovered in between the aisles of the library. She was on the lookout for more butterflies, having developed an interest in them since one had landed on her nose.

Indigo was staring in awe at the magical section of the library. She watched fascinated as some books jumped about on their shelves and others had tiny glittery things floating up out of them.

While Indigo and Monarch stared fascinated at the magical books in the library, Pixie was watching Cobalt hatch from his shell. With great force he shook the last pieces of eggshell everywhere and made his way to Pixie, slipping somewhat on his newly emerged legs. He enjoyed being wrapped in the blanket and was most pleased to see Pixie at last, having listened to her soothing voice through the echo of the shell for the past weeks. Nuzzling up to her, he purred contentedly.
