>> GENERAL NONSENSE

>> Do not post without getting Arrien's permission. The only people who are exceptions to this are the Fa'e and their guardians, those dropping off gifts, and friends of Arrien.
>> If you do feel a need to post unannounced, please make sure that there are no storylines in progress. When in doubt, wait it out- or, y'know, just message me. Whatever's easiest.
>> No OOC chat on this thread. Period. OOC comments are allowed in RP posts if necessary, but otherwise, you can contact me over PM or by messenger for chat.

>> BEFORE YOU EVEN ASK...

>> Any children that Dusty has? Yeah. Don't dream about 'em. Seriously. If I even so much as think that I've got people sizing Dusty up as a "breeder", I'll abandon my usual values of "let the RP decide what happens" and turn him into an anti-parent so fast, the potential mate would turn inside-out. Dusty's future is undecided, which means I want to do the best for him when the best is apparent.
>> On a similar note. No, Dusty doesn't have any predestined pairings, and I really don't want anyone to message me to suggest them or ask permission or whatever. If your Fa'e thinks he's hot stuff, then they're free to try and woo him or whatever. Their success is not gonna be guaranteed, given Dusty's personality and his background. But you know what? It's an RP, and to me, that means anything can happen.
>> I have been putting a special effort to list all of the Fa'e Dusty meets on the front page, no matter how small their interaction. If Dusty's met your Fa'e and they aren't there, either the roleplay is incomplete or I forgot. Don't hesitate to bug me!
>> If I'm responsible for a roleplay being incomplete... bug me, please. I don't like leaving things hanging, and there may be a reason for it.
>> A quick warning to questers thinking about looking for an Arthurian Fa'e! Talk to me before you get on it. Seriously, because Dusty's questing is going to be leaving very little room for Fa'e concepts about other important figures of that legend. I have a specific and rather all-encompassing plan for the things that had once surrounded Excalibur. New concepts trying to come in may not be acceptable due to their bases already being NPCs for Dusty's plot, or the fact that they would be too closely related to Dusty for me to be comfortable with. So just ask, or else find a different concept. (Approved Arthurian or Arthurian-related quests: Shiaree's Excalibur, midnight_medea's Avalon, Kyrianna's Taliesin.)
>>If you're saying, "HEY, WASN'T DUSTY REALLY A--" then the answer is yes. Going to kid stage did not change what Dusty actually is, but it did change Dusty's will on how to approach the matter. This is being expressed ICly and OOCly both. Nothing would make me happier than to make people confused or mislead about the truth of this matter, so I can get more honest IC reactions. So, we'll see how it goes. ;3

>> REVEALED SUPERNATURAL TRAITS
Darksight-- It's hard to say just how Dusty's eyes work, what with the no-pupils and all, but however they operate, they seem to work fairly well in darkness. The limits of this have yet to be tested. (Revealed in the Halloween Event of 2006.)
Sinking-- For some reason, Dusty appears to sink in water. Period. [Revealed in the Halloween Event of 2006.]
Immunity to Bleeding-- Dusty doesn't bleed. It doesn't mean that he can't be injured, but having his flesh cut open doesn't seem to be all that effectual- even if it does hurt like all heck. [Revealed in "Little Winged Thing", explored in "Cat and mouse... Er bird."]
Enhanced Healing-- Injuries seem to be healed quickly for Dusty, making a matter of weeks a matter of days. Only known wounds to heal in this manner are cuts. [Assumed after "Little Winged Thing."]
Antler Armor-- Three pieces of armor hover around Dusty at all times. This armor is made of a strong, almost wooden material, and is studded with gems. At a thought, Dustin can have the armor hover a few inches away from his shoulders and chest, or else have it lay flat against his body. When it is hovering, the force of weaker attacks may be fully negated; using the space between the armor and its master as a cushion, it will attempt to hold its ground without transferring any of the attack's force to Dusty. If the force should be enough that the armor is touching Dusty's body, however, then it operates only as normal armor does and absorbs no more of the attack's actual force. [Capabilities were explored in "Sleepover? Haha, yeah right."]
Command -- This is the mysterious gem that Dusty received in Fa'e Prom 2008. Supposedly, it has something to do relating with leadership- its effects may be too intangible for the deerkitten to understand, however, or else he may not know how to manifest them. [Revealed in Fa'e Prom 2008.]
Heavy -- Despite having a lean frame, Dusty weighs considerably more than he ought, and without any apparent reason. There doesn't seem to be much use for this yet, however. [Revealed in Miscalculation.]

>> FIGHTING STYLE
Strengths-- Dusty is built for defense, but trained in offense. Trying to land a hit on him is a tricky matter, especially for bare-fisted fighters. Even if one gets past his antler armor, several portions of his body are dangerous to strike, particularly the bejeweled side of his face and the back of his arms. Hitting any place where a bone is prominent is also oddly troublesome for the attacker, and less effective than usual.
Weaknesses-- Dusty is not naturally a "fast" fighter. Something about the way he is built makes it more difficult for him to pick up speed, and slows his reaction time when maneuvering. While this is all measured by fractions and has little effect on most issues in his life, in a battle situation, it becomes more prominent as he struggles to keep up with more dexterous fighters. Moreover, he has no experience with magic whatsoever; against spellcasters, his only means of defense is to take them out before they can do anything he can't handle.
Weaponry-- Dusty is familiar with one weapon style only, and that is the long sword. Despite his constant training, his skills with it are weak against trained and tactical fighters, but he has a couple innovative techniques up his sleeve to help out in a pinch.
Style-- Dusty's style has begun to evolve into something more polished than it one was, but is still overall weak. He is unafraid of being hit, finding that he can absorb a fair amount of punishment without it affecting his fighting, but still overexerts himself in blocking attacks. He highly prefers offensive fighting, and grows quickly impatient with being trapped in defensive patterns, often taking risks in order to break free from them. He also is more fixated on weapons than on the people wielding them, and can be caught off-guard too easily by a fist or foot where he isn't expecting it.

>> PERSONALITY
Coming into the first stage of semi-maturity, Dustin's growth into a child has marked many immediate changes in his behavior. Some are to be expected, such as a heightened demand for privacy and independence, as well as a stable sense of what things he finds interesting and what things he doesn't. Some of the things Arrien had hoped Dusty would grow out of, though, he quite plainly didn't.

Like bullying other children. If anything, Dusty has found more reason to establish himself dominant over the other kids, Fa'e and human alike. Most of the neighborhood kids have come to avoid him, and for good reason; not all of the money in Dusty's pockets was really intended to be his. One could say, in fact, that most of it was slated to pay for another kid's lunch. Dusty is taller, tougher, and a good deal more ornery than the average kid on the street, and he takes full advantage of that to get what he wants.

At least one can't argue that he hasn't found the value of a dollar. Maintaining many expensive hobbies has taught him that every penny has a worth, and while he isn't precisely stingy with what he has, Dusty's become very enterprising, and loves to come up with new schemes to earn a quick buck. Polish for swords and gems, new comic books... even beyond that, there's a new sort of respect that can be gained by being able to peel a buck off a dollar wad to buy shakes for all your friends, and who wouldn't love to be the kid that can do that?

And "respect" is a key word for Dusty's motivations. More than anything, Dusty wants for people to respect him- whether it's for his physical prowess, or his ability to afford stuff most kids would have to save for weeks to get, or any other way that he can get it. Self-image and reputation may not be the entirety of his existence, but they make up a huge chunk nonetheless. If he doesn't think someone has proper respect for him, he'll tend to go out of their way to prove how "tough" he is to them. And if he can't get respect that way, though, he tends to make people targets for his bullying- since they obviously must think they're tougher than him if they won't be impressed, right? Superiority is also very important to Dusty, especially superiority over guys, though he couldn't tell you why if he had to stop and think about it. On the bright side, Dusty no longer feels the need to bully children much smaller than himself. Someone getting more attention than him might not thrill him, but they won't earn his ire just for being cute.

At this point in his life, Dusty is extremely preoccupied with his training. If you see him, it can be assumed that you're seeing him with his sword on his back. He has a goal in mind, one that he only reveals to his most trustworthy of friends- he has a Great Destiny he's been told to live up to, and to achieve it, he has to be prepared. Any powers that he can find, he works hard to exploit- and if he finds he doesn't have any that he can use, well then, elbow grease is good enough for him. At the moment, he takes some amount of pride in being as tough as he is without any special powers to back it up (though, naturally, he's still quite jealous of those that prove they do have powers, and might end up challenging them to try and prove himself "better" than them).

Dusty is not, however, without his good traits. He's generally very happy to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, even if only for the glory of being the one to "make it happen". Once someone is on his good side, he isn't very likely to turn on them unless he feels they've turned on him. Even if he might treat friends roughly, he does honestly have concern for them and their happiness. He doesn't abide any injury to come to his friends, and might even be somewhat overzealous in their defense if he thinks that someone is trying to harm or insult them.

>> BACKGROUND
Dustin was born in the Durem Skating Rink on February 14th. It was a bit of a surprise; Keir, under a good deal of stress, went into labor right on the spot, and there wasn't time to get her to the hospital before Dusty graced the world with his presence (though they sure made a fast trip over there once he was around). After mother and baby were looked over and given the OK, Dusty went home immediately with his Guardian, Arrien, and didn't see his mother again for a long time after that.

Living with the Jack-of-all-Trades, Dustin learned a lot about the world and the people around his as a baby. Every day, Arrien would bring the babe with her out on her "daily runs", the closest thing to work Arrien has in which she makes her rounds of Barton (and, on occasion, the other Gaia cities) to meet with the people she knows and touch bases with all of her friends, and often works through issues with some of the more troubled people she knows or outright interferes to set things right in their lives when they seem to be floundering. It might not be so much of a surprise how spoiled Dusty seemed to have become, then, given how many people he'd had to fuss over him in his lifetime while Arrien's been busy meddling.

The first truly significant event in Dusty's life occurred when he was still just an ickle little thing. It took form of a strange happening that occurred when Arrien, curious and impatient about her baby's mysterious past life, attempted to get a friend of hers to scry into Dusty's past. With Luciel and Callix as bystanders, Arrien's friend (called Bard) attempted to open up a connection through to Dustin's past and display it as an illusion in the middle of the woman's living room. Whether or not this worked is as of yet unclear; if it had, it was interrupted as the illusion began painting the scenery around a lake when one of Bard's instruments broke and a presence, detectable only by Dustin and Callix, breezed through the room.

When Arrien later questioned Bard what had gone wrong, he described only that the mouths of dragons were no place for poor spellcasters like himself to be sticking their heads into. Which made absolutely no sense to anyone, of course, but that's how magic-users tend to speak.

Dusty came into toddlerhood in the manner most befitting Fa'e, through means of an item quest in which he was given many gems, some books, and a scabbard, and was also lucky enough to get a story about Coyote and Raven from his dad.

At the Fa'e Prom 2006, Dustin was fortunate enough to acquire his first "real" sword in the games, a blade enchanted to keep him from hurting anyone with it until he was old enough to handle it properly (though everyone was horrified to later discover that apparently, kid stage was 'old enough'). He established himself as quite the little warrior-in-training during those same games, in which he fought alongside Lethe, Callix, and Xo a fierce and gigantic blob of jello, which was no doubt very evil and in need of slaying.

It was after the Prom had ended, though, that he came across the adventure that would really set his life down the path of the blade; throwing a rock at what he thought was a funny-looking bird provoked an attack from the Legion, a very scary experience for a young tot like he was to go through. From that day on, he has been committed to becoming the toughest thing around.

Shortly before Halloween of that same year, Dusty found himself caught up in a whole new adventure when the Fa'e HQ turned into a spookhouse. Trying to keep with his friends, he and Lethe ended up isolated from the rest of the group; then the two were separated when they went into the Library when the bookcases shifted to corner Dusty by the door, and he was attacked and devoured by a disgusting creature. He was spit up shortly afterwards, but his personality had gone strangely missing; he became a suddenly calculating and obedient warrior, following the commands of his friends and fighting off the horrors that greeted them with a strangely tactical mind. He eventually returned to his old self, however, and nearly drowned in the Entertainment Room (where it was discovered that, hey, guess what? DEERKITTENS DON'T FLOAT). This was a very impressionable experience for him, needless to say.

The memory of this last experience was still heavy on his mind when, late at night, Callix came a-tapping at his door and called him out for an adventure. The boy wanted to find a woman he knew, and Dusty, eager for a chance to prove his strength no matter the hour, grabbed his swords and snuck out with him. After walking for a time, they came across a lake that, in retrospect, Dusty didn't know actually existed; sitting on a stump there was the woman Callix had wanted to see. The lady, who they learned was nameless, referred to Callix as an "evil one", but seemed to take more kindly to Dusty (though she was pretty creepy and weird, so Dusty can't say exactly the same for her). She urged the deerkitten to stay away from the redhead, and informed Callix that he was an incubus... whatever that is. Just as Callix was ready to head on home, a creature emerged from the lake and attacked the woman. Dusty, happy for something of significance to do, leapt to the attack- only to find that his sword went right through the creature, as if it were not real. When the lady went doll-like and limp, Callix and Dusty retreated. Dusty became determined, however, to find some way to fight that creature at some later time, and return to avenge his honor.

Some time had passed before Dustin's next adventure came. After unwillingly being enrolled in a ballet class, the deerkitten was mortified when Arrien took him straight to the Fa'e HQ afterwards, where Lethe was waiting to celebrate. After screaming at his Guardian, the toddler ran off to hide in the Salle, where he later found that he was unable to leave due to some magic force. A strange and likely sorcery-induced nap brought him to a strange place of unreality, where he was introduced to old Camelot and the life of King Arthur. Dusty made many discoveries during this time, but the most powerful of these was spoken to him by a strange voice whom he assumed was behind the entire escapade- Camelot was in need of rescue, and he was the hero it was waiting for. He had a Great Destiny to live up to, and he needed to train for that purpose. When he awoke, Dustin found that he had grown into a child.

Later, as he was investigating his redecorated room and relaxing, he rediscovered a library book about Camelot that Arri had checked out for him as a toddler. Reading through it, he became suddenly intrigued by a picture of the sword Excalibur; after thinking things through, he realized that he must have been that same sword in his past life.

Quote:
(highlight to read)

The entire world was bathed in bronze, tinted by the sunlight as the golden orb made to retire to the horizon and the soft velvet of the night sky. The leaves rattled softly on the bough as the wind twisted its way softly across the lakeshore, skimming across the eerily still surface. Two horses stood in silent vigil beneath the lengthening shadows of a trio of tall birch, one blood and the other flesh in color, as they watched steadfastly the two figures that stood solemnly at the lake's edge.

One of them was a young man, with arrogant posturing and a powerful build. He wore a magnificent set of plate armor beneath a brilliantly colored cloak, the precise hue of a harvest moon. A golden crown rested amidst his tousled blonde hair, demanding that his presence be acknowledged and revered. The other, however, was much the opposite of the flashy, bold man. He was elderly; not to the point of crippled, for his body was strong and full of life, but the long gray beard that hid his face attested to his age. He wore a set of simple gray robes, and carried a gnarled and worn staff that looked to be practically as old as he was. Despite his more drab and somewhat bedraggled appearance, there was a strange sense about the man, that of awe-inspiring power, that confused the eye.

The two held their ground a moment, and their tongues as well, simply gazing out upon the unmoving waters. In the center of the lake rested a mossed protrusion, no greater in length than the distance between one's fingertips and elbow, and no taller than a doorway. At a glance, one might assume it to be a log of some sort, having somehow made its way to the center of the lake to stick straight up into the air. However, peeking out through the carpet of green moss, a glint of steel could be seen, and clasping it a slim, delicate hand that emerged seamlessly from the lake.

"Lo!" said the elder of the two, turning to the other to twinkle his blue eyes in a hidden smile. "Yonder is that sword that I spake of."

Even as the man spoke the words, the younger set a foot forward to the lake, with the clear intention of simply going through the waters to fetch the blade. However, as he peered down at the glasslike surface of the lake, his attention was caught by a curious sight. The water rippled faintly where his gaze fell, leaving an impression of flowing white samite falling fluidly over the soft curves of a maiden's body.

"... What damsel is that?" He inquired incredulously, his movements frozen as his eyes locked on the fleeting form that drifted amongst the waterweed. With a faint chuckle, the other man leaned upon his staff and began to speak once more.

"That is the Lady of the Lake, and within that lake is a rock, and therein is a place as fair as any on earth, and richly beseen; and this damsel will come to you anon, and then speak ye fair to her that she will give you the sword." During this talk, the youth took a step back from the waters to turn his attention in full to the robed man alongside him, and consider his words. His faith in the other's judgment was all but boundless- if he said that the damsel would come to him, then he would trust that she would. With that, the two waited, as the air darkened and the day continued on, perilously close to death.

No sooner had the first star sparked into the sky, however, then there was a stirring of water. Strange droplets, sparkling with stored sunlight, twirled about the entire surface of the lake, disturbing the surface at last to break into lapping waves, which rushed the feet of the two visitors for a playful moment before receding once more. The golden waters converged before them, several paces away under the waters, before slowly stretching up to the sky. They emerged at last as the form of the Lady of the Lake, bathed in pale light and swathed in flowing white, which floated softly on the lake's surface until it mixed with the water itself and made the two as one.

She gave a faint salute of one arm, which was, to her delight, returned by the crowned youth. It was he that first spoke, and said, "Damsel, what sword is that, that yonder the arm holdeth above the water? I would it were mine, for I have no sword." He gestured to the hidden blade, but her gaze did not follow- her eyes, colorless as the blind, remained focused in his direction as a smile worked its way to her lips.

"Sir Arthur, king," she spoke, her voice ethereal and noble, "That sword is mine, and if ye will give me a gift when I ask it you, ye shall have it." A moment of hesitation, as the youth considered the implications of owing a boon to a creature such as the Lady before him; it was swept away, however, by the promise of the sword that he lusted after.

"By my faith, I will give you what gift ye will ask." He met her gaze determinedly, filled to the brim with every bit of kingly charisma he could gather. She simply laughed lightly, however.

"Well!" With a beaming smile, she clapped her hands once, producing a blast of air that split the water before her down the center. There, beneath the water's surface, rested a silver boat, the stern adorned with a silver harp and two long, elegantly molded oars lashed onto either side of the hull. The water slipped back into place slowly, filling up the space beneath the watercraft- and, impossibly, the boat floated on the surface. The water level beneath it rose until the gap that had been created to reveal the boat was filled once more, leaving the lake still and silent again, save for the visage of the Lady and the boat that bobbed gently at its shore.

"Go ye into yonder barge, and row yourself to the sword, and take it and the scabbard with you, and I will ask my gift when I see my time." One hand touched her lips briefly in a blown kiss and, without any coming response from either man, she sank beneath the surface once more and disappeared.

The two men shared a brief look, before taking themselves into the boat and beginning to row to the waiting sword.

***

As the two rode alongside the pavilion of Sir Pellinore, away from the lake and into the enveloping inkwell of night, Sir Arthur looked fondly upon the sword at his side. Though it was hidden in the gilded black leather scabbard, he could feel the power of the sword stirring through the hilt; this was the sword that truly made him King, the sword that gave him the power to protect his country from the evil that grew within it. Any other sword before now had been a mere children's toy, nothing more than practice to train him for the acquisition of the blade that had been his destiny. This was his fate. This was Excalibur.

The man riding beside him sharply reined his steed to a skittering halt. Alarmed, Arthur did the same. A quick scan of the area revealed no enemy, no danger- there was not even the slightest clue to the other man's intentions in the sudden halt. He turned his gaze to his elder, his eyes demanding that he answer the question that rested so obviously on his mind.

"... Whether liketh you better," the bearded man said, his voice pondering but his eyes serious and worn. "The sword? Or the scabbard?"

"Me liketh better the sword," Arthur answered instantly, as if there were only one solution to be had, and he thought the other man a blind fool for not having already seen that. The other, however simply sighed and shook his head, running a hand through the thinning gray hair of his head and nudging his horse into a slow amble. Perplexed, the youth did the same, bringing his mount alongside the other.

For several minutes, they did ride in this fashion; slowly, uncertainly, with the elder lost in his thoughts and the younger trying to ken the other’s mind. At last, though, the older man turned his attention once more to Arthur.

"Ye are most unwise," reproached he, his voice drifting somewhere between disappointment and scornfulness, "For the scabbard is worth ten of the swords, for whiles ye have the scabbard upon you, ye shall never lose no blood, be ye never so sore wounded; therefore keep well the scabbard always with you."

Arthur's eyes grew wide, as he turned his gaze down again to his precious Excalibur, and the extravagant scabbard that held it. Newfound respect was there in his gaze. The sword was powerful, yes, and demanded more attention; but the scabbard was created for the purpose of containing that power, and that alone should have made Arthur realize that it itself was an item of greatness. But now... the sword was an undefeatable weapon, but the scabbard was an impenetrable armor. Any sword could cut down any foe, with skill and persistence, but there was no set of armor alive that could promise to spare its master from bloodshed.

The sword had made him King... but, perhaps, the scabbard would be the one that would keep him that way.

***

Days, weeks, years passed by. The sword Excalibur saw many battles, drank the blood of countless enemies, and always triumphed over whatever challenge fell before it. The sword became a legend, even as it still existed- and, with that status, became immortal to the human mind, synonymous with the medieval age and the Knights of the Round Table.

Just as hard-pressed to make use of its strength, however, was the scabbard. For every sword that its bearer was too slow to avoid, the scabbard stole away the hurt, mended the wound even as it was made, draining its own power for the sake of the one that wore it at his side. But, unlike Excalibur, the scabbard gained nothing in return. No notoriety, no fame. It was nothing of its own, to the world; it wasn't even considered as useless, as no one even noticed it at all. Overshadowed forever by its counterpart, the scabbard simply existed without acknowledgement.

With time, even the King, who knew of the scabbard's power and owed his life to it a thousand times over, began to neglect the importance of the scabbard. The wizard Merlin, who had first told the young King of the scabbard's importance, was slain by a lady of the lake- but not before telling Arthur to keep close his sword and scabbard, for they would one day be stolen away from him by a woman that he most trusted. However, the King's focus returned to the sword, as he had first been inclined; and the scabbard, though completely ignored now, continued its work as it had been spelled to do.

Eventually, though, Arthur's negligence would prove to be his downfall, come one disastrous night. For, though the King always took the precaution to sleep with his sword at his hand, he had not thought to give his scabbard such protection.

So was the case when, as he slept in an abbey far from his home, his sister, grieving over the loss of Accolon, came upon his bedside with the hopes of stealing the blade. When she found that she could not take Excalibur without waking her brother, she instead settled herself to steal away his scabbard. She took to her horse, and fled.

When Arthur awoke to find his scabbard disappeared, he was brimming with rage. When he discovered that his sister had been there, he fetched one of his knights, Sir Ontzlake, and rode off in pursuit of her. When at last they managed to catch up with her, however, she stood by a lake. "Whatsoever come of me, my brother shall not have this scabbard" she declared, then hurled the scabbard into the deepest waters of the lake.

Without Merlin to assist him, the King had no choice but to abandon the scabbard to the lake waters, to erode slowly. He fought many more battles, armed with Excalibur; he met his end, however, at the hands of Sir Mordred, his own son. Though near death as he was, he saw to one final task- that his sword be thrown back to a lake, where it was caught by a hand, and disappeared into the waters once more.

>> Arrien (positive, close, Guardian; "Arri")
"Yeah, this is Arrien. Or, uh... "the Infamous Jack-of-all-Trades, Arrien", which is how she'd say it. Arri. We had a rough period, but I think we're gettin' along pretty well these days. Even if she is an overbearing b***h who tries to control everythin' I do. She's my Guardian, though, and that means somethin'; I guess I'm sort of her kid, too. It's confusing to think about it too much."

>> Keir (neutral-negative, distant, Mother)
"I don't wanna think about her. She doesn't give a ********, so why should I?"

>> Yanisin (positive, close, Father; "Dad")
"This's Dad. Yeah, I know, we don't look too much alike... mostly the feet and hair, I think, and a lil' in the face, Arri tells me. I don't think we look the same at all, but that's cool. Dad and I are a lot different in a lot of ways - a lot. He's a really peaceful sorta nice guy, and uh, I'm... well, really kind of not. But we're family anyway, I guess, and it's pretty cool."

>> Jade (positive, acquaintance, Grandmother; "Gramma")
"I barely remember her, to be honest. Gramma Jade is my Dad's Guardian, and I know I'm supposed to be on my very best behavior around her, and uh... I think she had a cool necklace?"

"C-A is the robot thing that lives at our house. She's really friggin' weird, and annoying. Arri says she can't get rid of her, is the only reason she's really around. But she does a lot of the work around the house, so it's not really so big a deal. I try and just avoid her."

"I've met Miranda every now and again. She's nice to me, I guess... but she's really pretty irritating, it's like she doesn't have a spine at all. It drives me nuts!"

>> Overview
Arrien's home can be described as a constant trial of carpentry, innovation, and perseverance. Originally designed as a party house for frat boys, swingers, and others of that variety, it was given to Arrien as a gift from her sisters. Since that time, she has dedicated much of her time and energy into renovating it into something a little more habitable. It's certainly seen its fair share of disasters- mostly originating from Arrien's friends and roommates- but it's still standing, so you have to give the house at least some credit for structural integrity. (Note: the image I made is slightly disproportionate, in that the house SHOULD be a little bigger in regards to the property. Arrien does have a pretty damn big yard, though.)

User Image

>> Entryway/living room
A door on the front porch leads straight into a comfortable-looking living room. Shoji screens have been set up to separate this room from the kitchen/dining area to the west, and there is a staircase leading into the basement in the northeast corner of the room. Several chairs are slung about the room, as well as an overstuffed loveseat; there is a decent-sized television on the east wall, towards which all of the furniture is aimed but one. Nestled in spot where the northern wall meets with the line of Shoji screens, a green couch is pushed firmly against the wall with all of the pillows on it askew. Late at night, when all else is silent, a faint thrumming sound can be heard from that spot....

>> Kitchen/dining room
This room is cut off from the living room by Shoji screens. There is a door in the north wall leading out to the backyard and playground, a gap in the Shoji screens leads to the entryway/entertainment room to the east, and a oaken door offers entry to the study to the south. There is also a door to the west which leads into a storage closet, which is also considered to be Arrien's unwanted android roommate, C-A Jika's, bedroom. What was once a bar has now been converted workable kitchen; a fridge, a stove, a microwave, the works. Despite her best efforts, the kitchen still has a very "bar"-ish feel about the place... but it's the content that matters, so far as Arrien is concerned, not the appearance.

>> Study
A computer at one wall, a mess of bookshelves on the other, and a couple bean bag chairs thrown wherever some color is needed. A small houseplant rests on the computer desk, looking a bit sad and neglected. The kitchen/dining room is to the north, the two bathrooms are to the south.

>> Bathrooms
Almost completely identical, the only thing that has been changed about these two rooms since the days of the building being a party house is to include a shower in one and a bathtub in the other. As was before Arrien came into possession of the house, there is a male sign outside of one and a female sign outside of the other; for some reason, Arrien saw no reason to remove those. Probably because they amuse her.

>> Playground
This is the one feature that Arrien can't figure out how to twist into something useful for her, so she's content leaving it as is for the sake of whatever children find it interesting. The small playground features rubber chips, a swing set, and a sandbox, and is surrounded by some hardy and fragrant flowers that have been surviving Arrien's negligence with surprising success.

>> Basement
This has been transformed into three rooms; one for Arrien, and a storage room which connects to the stairs (with a futon for Arrien's demon roommate, Gohma), and Dusty's room.

>> Dusty's Room
Best described as bright, orange, and spacious, Dusty's room has been updated to suit him as an older and more mature individual.

>> Pond
The water feature rests towards the back of the property, next to the playground. The water is rather shallow in some places, enough for small children to wade in, but gets pretty deep towards the center; perhaps ten or twelve feet at its deepest. There are a few koi yet murking about its depths, but sadly, Arrien's neglect has killed off all but the most adaptable.

>> Treehouse
The dream of all children (and Jack-of-all-Trades). While Dusty was away at Prom, Arrien hosting a huge party of her friends, in which beer was generously given until everyone was drunk enough that when Arrien suggested, "Hey, you know what WE should build? 8D", she was met with nothing but eagerness.

This treehouse was Dusty's own personal retreat, filled with all the things his little heart could desire... but after a drifter came through, he started referring to it as "the doghouse" and refused to have anything to do with it. Accessible by either a series of wooden planks nailed into the treetrunk or by crawling up a plastic slide that coils gradually around the back of tree, the treehouse has not one, but two stories to it. The bottom story is railed, not walled in, and is a circular platform built around the tree.

The walled-in "house" portion of the tree is accessible only through a rope ladder that can be dropped through trapdoor, offering a sense of security and privacy. Nailed near the entrance to the trapdoor is still a colorful sign, reading loudly and plainly- "NO GIRLS". Naturally, this sign is ignored on many occasions for Dusty's friends. Measuring in with enough space to comfortably handle about 10 kids or so, the house is cradled on many of the tree's strongest branches, with the trunk jutting through the center. A bit of magical assistance was provided by one of Arrien's friends to provide it with a connection to the house's electricity for heating and television purposes. Featuring a bookcase and two windows facing the street and the front of Arrien's house, the inside of the treehouse is carpeted in green and seems quite cozy indeed.

Arrival of the Mighty Deerkitten

"Haha, oh man. I was a cool-looking kid, ya know? Arri says this is what I looked like right after I came back from the hospital, and I can believe it. I wonder what happened to that blanket? I guess Arri might be hiding it somewhere or something for when I get older, I dunno....

"Anyway. I don't really remember being a baby or anything, but I've heard all sorts of stories. I guess I was a real terror or something. Kept life interesting at least, right? Arri likes to talk about how I was when I was littler a lot, like it was so long ago. Sounded like a lot of hard work, really... I dunno why she likes to remember it so much.

"Well, all that aside. I like this picture a lot. Beats those poor kids that have naked baby pictures, that's for darn sure."

And Then It Grew
User Image

"HEEEEERE we go. Now that looks a lot more like me. I was a bit chubby back then, wasn't I, though? Huh... guess it was baby fat or something. Arri says it made me look cute. I just think I looked funny.

"You can really tell, though, what my parents looked like. I dunno.... why do I have so many traits from my mom? I would've thought I'd have at least a few more from Dad. What's it called... genetics, right? Crazy stuff. At least I got my hooves, though those are pretty difficult to manage with. Does Dad even have hooves? I don't think so... man, that's weird.

"I don't remember most of when I was a toddler anymore, but at least some of it I do. Mostly the crazy stuff. Man, bein' a toddler was FUN."

"One of the first things I can remember now was the stuff that happened at Prom. But, uh... I hate this picture. Want to burn it. And probably will.

"... That's all."

All Together Now.... ~awwwww!~
User Image

"Here! I knew there had t'be at least one good pic in here! This is a picture of me and Dad. See? We don't look too much alike, right? Sort of... night and day, or whatever. You can tell, though, we're real close. Kinna have to be; Arri tells me almost every day how lucky I am to have family like him, and while I gotta roll my eyes at how earnest she can be about it, I know I'm lucky already.

"... And, uh, anyone that reads this: you don't tell that to ANYONE. Got it? I never said that. Tell anyone, and you're DEAD."

Watch out, playgrounds of the world!
User Image

"Now this is more like it! This is me, Dustin, as I am now. Pretty damn badass, right? The armor's a new thing, really cool stuff. I've been trying to test it, since ya gotta know how good your armor is, but I haven't gotten a good opportunity for it yet.

"I guess it sounds pretty, uh... nar-kiss-tic or whatever, but I think I grew up pretty damn good. It's kinna weird. I sorta don't tend to think of myself too much in terms of what I am- Fa'e, whatever- but when it's times like this... its kinna impossible to forget, y'know? Most kids don't roll out of bed one day and find that they've grown a few feet overnight. Though, uh, I didn't precisely just roll out of bed to become a kid.....

"But that's a story for another day. This is image worship time, right? Ya gotta love it!"

>> 2/14/06
Dustin apparently decided that he'd had enough of all the yelling going on outside of his womb and thought he might as well be born smack dab in the middle of the Fa'e Valentine's Party at the Durem Skating Rink. Witnesses to his great entrance to the world were Yanisin, Nozomi, Arrien, Jade and, of course, Keir herself.

>>5/1/06
While waiting outside for her spellcaster friend to show up, Arrien comes across Lu and Callix. After hearing about her plan to attempt to magically divine Dusty's past life, they decide to hang around and see how things go. However, once the Bard shows up and starts with his spell, something goes wrong and interrupted his spell. Callix and Dusty both sensed something in the room, and Bard seemed dazed and stunned by whatever had caused his spell to fail. Confused and angered, Dusty proceeded to begin throwing a tantrum, so Lu and Callix left at Arrien's suggestion.

>>6/2/06
********. A visit to the HQ results in Dusty meeting a new face or two, and an unexpected run-in with his father. Their impromptu visit goes very well, as Dusty gets to show off how much he's learned about such things as gravity and limb control, and Yanisin teaches him how to say "daddy".

>>7/22/06
Dusty becomes a toddler!

>>8/10/06
Fa'e Prom: Flights of Fancy arrives at the Serafina manor! Dusty stirs up trouble wherever he goes, naturally, and gets to meet such Fa'e as Xo, Roth, Raeith, and others. As a prize for participating in the games, he gets... uh... a sword........ wait, Miss Devan, can we talk about this, please?

>>8/13/06
At the end of the party, everyone heads home. Dusty is walking with a group of Fa'e when a bunch of big, ugly, annoying ravens manage to get on his nerves. Noting similar reactions in the other Fa'e, the deerkitten is only too eager to prove his worth by chucking a rock at the ravens- only to find they aren't real birds at all, but members of the Legion. One terrified bout later, Dustin comes out of the scuffle in one piece (thanks largely to Morty's protection), but with a new need grown into his soul- training to become strong enough to defend himself the next time the need arises.

>>10/7/06
Dusty gets to meet... his mother?

>>10/22/06
An Abyssal haunting at the HQ might provide a glimpse into our beloved deerkitten's true nature... but what nature is that at all?

>>11/9/06
Callix comes to Dusty's window late at night to ask his help in an adventure. The two Fa'e set out in search of a woman that Callix wants to ask some questions, and find a mysterious lake. Callix gets his answers, but then a strange creature comes out of the lake and attacks- and Dusty's sword can't hit it! They beat a hasty retreat, but the adventure weighs heavy on the deerkitten's mind as he tries to understand why his attack didn't work.

>>1/13/07
A strange sleep takes Dusty to a dream-that-is-not-a-dream, where he, in an astral world, is able to witness first-hand many of the key events of King Arthur's rule. Guided by a voice with no body, it is revealed to him that Camelot is in need of a hero, and the he is supposed to be it. When he awakes, he finds himself grown into a child!

>>2/9/07
Taking what he's learned from his quest, along with the information found in his handy-dandy book of Camelot, Dusty puts two and two together at last and recognizes his past identity- which could be none other, of course, than the sword Excalibur!

>>??/??/08
Gathering with the other Fa'e for a fun get-together at Big Al's Lasertag Emporium, they were made the targets once more of an Abyssal attack. In the midst of the mayhem, a devil named Regas emerges from the Abyss.

>>12/23/08
While out with his Guardian, Rei and Onuris on an Animated hunting trip, Dustin's group is met by a group of strange, white-robed women, clearly unnatural. They are forced into a fight, but nearly overwhelmed, and are forced to retreat.

>>04/04/09
Dustin is contacted again by the bodyless voice, who he now learns is named Nil. He finds out that the women that attacked him were sent by the devil, Regas, who was once a King of Camelot who was unrighteous and shattered Excalibur. When such a great power is broken, attentions are bound to be drawn, summoning a devil to the battle which drew the king to Hell and slew nearly every soul on the battlefield before making toward Camelot. Without king or Excalibur and such a terrible threat drawing near, the young and foolish wizard of the kingdom did what he could, and wove a spell that tore Camelot from the earth and cast it into a static universe, where it would remain until one with the power of the righteous rule would return to it. Nil informs Dustin that Regas has been set on invading Camelot and taking it for his own once more, and in order to accomplish this, he will be set on destroying the young Arthurian Fa'e who has the power to reawaken the slumbering kingdom. In order to save Camelot, Dustin must enter the kingdom - but, he learns, he must lay claim to a holy sword, or else he will be unable to defend against the corrupted dreams of the souls there. With an instruction not to speak of matters of Camelot outside of Nil's company, as Regas will certainly be listening for those that know of the kingdom to try and find him, Dusty is told to purify himself so that he will be ready to receive the sword.

>>08/11/09
Months have passed without word from Nil, and with the knowledge that Regas must be gaining more ground in Camelot with every passing day, Dustin has grown increasingly agitated. What does it mean to be pure? What does he have to do to be ready for the journey awaiting him? When threatened by Devmani's Guardian, he angrily reveals that he was Excalibur in his past life - but in ignoring Nil's command not to speak of such matters, puts himself into danger....
