The planet was densely covered with wild trees and vines, ruins scattered here and there speaking of long lost civilizations. The only living things were a few scattered animals, strange sounding birds that cried out foreign words, and shining eyes that watched the two females from Gaia, blood lust in their eyes. Trinityblue and Ice Queen were on a mission. They were plotting a planet for new colonization.
They approached the large temple like ruins with caution, looking around for traps and the bolder predator. It seemed as though everything would be perfect, though. The ruins would add value to the planet, making them better paid for the discovery. "Hey, TB, you think we can get a--" Ice's voice cut off with a scream, making Trinity turn.
"Wha-AHHH!!!" She found herself sliding down a tunnel, falling to the ground with a muffled "Oomph!" She looked around, her eyes slowly focusing on the dark silhouette of Ice. "What happened?"
"We fell into some sort of room. Look what I found!" Ice announced, turning with a grin, a strange looking mask in her hand.
"That's... great, Ice. Now tell me how we get out of here."
"Oh, right."

((That night, their campsite))
"I don't know why you brought that thing with us, it's kind of... well... creepy." Trinity stated as she dropped down next to Ice beside the fire. She motioned to the strange looking mask in the other female's hand. "We don't even know what civilization it's from. This is an uncharted planet, after all."
"Yeah, but it was cool looking! Think of what this could have been used for! Ancient balls, or plays, or--"
"Fine, fine, just put it away. I'm getting funny vibes off of it." Trinity told her, looking up at the two moons that lit the foreign planet. Ice stared at the mask for a second, watching as the moonlight glinted off the shimmering surface. It almost seemed to glow. "Are you going to put it away or not?"
"Oh... right." Ice shoved the mask into her pack then headed for her pallet. They would be on the planet for another week, trying to evaluate it for a new colony. It was a rough job, but interesting enough. Neither female noticed the way the mask seemed to throb in the dark pack.

((One week later))
"Trin? Have you seen my mask? I can't find it anywhere!" Ice shouted, dragging all of her clothes and comic books out of her pack. Her hand reached the bottom of the bag, groping around, but finding nothing. Trinity looked over.
"Why would I have? I keep telling you that thing has a strange au--" She stopped, looking shocked for some reason.
"What? That whole weird aura thing? Honestly, TB, I think--"
"Ice?"
"That you're a little--"
"Ice. Turn around." Trinity said, interrupting Ice's rant. Ice blinked, then turned. There behind her stood a strange child, wearing her mask.
"Hey! That's mine! Where'd you come from, anyways?" Ice demanded, reaching for the child. The child slipped away, wagging a finger at her.
"Ice, this planet is uninhabited. We ran checks, remember?" Trinity said, still staring at the child. "I don't know how, but... I think she's from the mask."
"But... how?" Ice asked, almost groaning as the child nodded in agreement with Trinity's words. "Is she some sort of... spirit or something?" The small child reached out, grabbing Ice's hand and tugging her away. "Wait, where are we going? Wh--"
The child tugged her, not bothering to answer her questions as they stopped in the small room where her mask had been found. She picked up one of the masks, handing it to Trinity with an almost demanding gesture.
"I think..." Ice started out. "That she wants her friends brought... back."
"But why can't she do it herself?" Trinity asked, not really wanting to touch the mask the child offered.
"She's just a kid, Trin! She needs a guardian, and I bet the others will too. But there's only two of us..."
"Well... I can't believe I'm saying this... We'll bring one or two with us back to Gaia. But not many! I swear they--"
"Yeah, weird vibes, I've heard it already. Now grab a mask, would you? We can't leave the kid alone, can we?"
"Sure, whatever... Don't blame me if one of them turns out to be a psycho or something."
"Sounds entertaining."
And that's how Masquerade came to be... Or is it?
******************
((That night))
The silent, masked Io stared at the room full of masks, her hands gripped tightly enough to show white in the small stream of moonlight. Where is it... The mask has to be here... She thought, shifting through the masks. Her new guardian would wonder where she was if she took too long, but she had to know.
As soon as I find you I swear I'll rip out your heart... For what you did to our people you will suffer. I swear it. She thought angrily, her tongue silenced by the mask she had been cursed with.
The sound of laughter seemed to echo in the room, making her skin chill and the hair on the back of her neck stand. WHERE ARE YOU?!
