Wow, you mean I actually qualify to be part of an edgy social movement? That's a first in my life. >.<
It seems to me that parading your good deeds (drawing an 'X' on your hand) is kind of a violation of the spirit of Matt 6:5, though:
Matthew 6:5-6, NIV
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
That is entirely correct if we were talking about prayer. But what this movement is about, as it relates to Christians, can be traced to:
1 Corinthians 6:19
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;"
The X, which not all straight edgers use, is a symbol meaning that you choose not to do anything which is harmful to your body. People don't tend to offer you drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. if the know what it means. The X does not "parade good deeds", it's just a symbol which stands for something you believe in. I don't think that it's any different than wearing a cross necklace or a WWJD? bracelet.
I would also like to applaud you for staying on topic and making a serious post.
