When using a judges panel
step.01.finding.judges
When it's time to create a panel of judges, there are many things that you should keep in mind.
Try to enlist Gaians who have been around for a few months and have a general understanding of Gaian society and culture. You want to try and avoid having a judge that may be swayed by the items a contestant is wearing that they desire to own themselves.
Look for Gaians who will give constructive, rather than destructive, feedback.
Try to find honest Gaians, ones who won’t rate their friends higher, or take any form of bribes.
Don't pick evil people!
It is also a good idea to create a panel of judges who all have a different sense of style. Or at least have the capability to be objective and not rate others down for not following their own personal style of dress. (i.e. nightmare, angelic, conservative, colorful, predominately dark, etc.)
Hire an odd number of judges. Five seems to be a favored number. Having an odd number will help in having a tiebreaker vote.
step.02.set.guidelines
Now that you've created your panel, it's time to write down the guidelines for your judges to follow.
Creating categories for judges to rate is a great way to go about finding a winner. Here are some catagories that you may want to include with your contest:
Coordination:: Are they wearing items that compliment the eye, skin, and hair color? Do the items work well with each other?
Originality:: Has this style been seen worn by other Gaians before?
Overall Look:: Step back and take a look... Like or dislike?
Fits Theme:: If a themed contest, how well does the avatar incorporate the themed item(s)?
For a more detailed informational thread on how to rate different types of Avatars, check out Candycrack's "How Do I Rate That?!"
Remind your judges to be fair when casting their votes. Things judges should NOT take into consideration:
How well they like the person.
If that person will do them favors.
Whether the contestant fits their personal style.
The expense of the items involved
step.03.create.thread
When you've settled on all the details create a thread that will feature the contestants along with the criteria judges will use when casting their votes.
Try to take some time to format your thread nicely. The more aesthetically appealing, the more likely it will attract attention.
Set a time limit for judges to send in their votes. (i.e. 7-10 days) Instruct them to send you a PM with their numbers before time's up. Each judge should send in ratings for each category per contestant.
A note regarding displaying avatars: It is highly recommended that the contest organizer save a copy of each contestant's avatar on their own web server. This way the contestants have the option to change their avatar during the final stages of the competition.
step.04.calculate.results
After all judges have submitted their votes, it's time to tally up and find the winner!
The following steps are recommended to follow when calculating the winner:
Method 1 :: Cog
Judges PM organizer with their ratings in each catagory from scale of 1-10.(1 being least favored and 10 being most favored)
Organizer adds the total for each contestant.
Highest score wins!
(Please refer to example A below)
Method 2 :: Cog
Similar to method 1, method 2 has a different rating scale for each catagory.
Co-ordination: 3pts
Originality: 2pts
Overall Look: 2pts
Theme: 3pts
for a possible total of 10pts
(Please refer to example B below.)
arrow It is recommended that the calculated results be posted in the contest thread. That way all contestants can see where the final results came from. It also makes it possible for people to double-check the math, since mistakes can happen.
