- The River Oblivion, in human incarnation (or as close to it as possible), is probably not what people are quite expecting. This journal details the adventures and discoveries of Lethe, a River Fa'e who exists largely by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and faking it.

- ____{ Name }
Lethe is perhaps the most straightforward of all the Fa'e -- her name remains the same as it was in her past life. In Classical Greek, Lethe literally means 'forgetfulness' or 'concealment'. In reverse, the Greek word for 'truth' is a-lethe-ia, meaning 'un-forgetfulness' or 'un-concealment'.
Furthermore, though she does not truly belong to the clan, Lethe has nevertheless taken Chai's family name of 'Suiryuugan'.
____{ Basic information }
date of birth» march 14 2005
age» child; around 12
skintone» bone white
eye color» pupil-less river blue
hair color» black
occupation» super spy and bringer of bad luck
likes» water, stars, fairy tales, adventures, the spotlight, neutrality.
neutral» babies, nature, morality, solitude.
dislikes» heat, shrimp, ignorance, extremes.
favorite colors» doesn't particularly care, but is somewhat partial to colorless things.
favorite foods» soup.
favorite music» nothing yet.
essentially» very strange.
____{ Personality }
At this point of her life, Lethe's personality is extremely unstable and has a habit of shifting and mutating as easily as water does to suit the company of whoever is around her. When she is around other people, she unconciously absorbs their traits and dispositions and becomes little more than a reflection in water; to the adventuresome kind she is equally adventuresome, and to the offensive type she is offensive, and so on, until she makes a concious effort to change her personality to appeal to her companions. She loves being in the spotlight and will do almost anything to get it; she's two-faced and contradictory and probably a double-crosser and hasn't seen anything wrong with this yet. She has ambiguous morals and doesn't care as long as other people can validate her existance. She expects as much out of life as it does of her and is very much a daredevil, enthusiastic about the smallest of things and eager to find new experiences.
By herself, she is not prone to be anything at all. Inwardly she is introspective, calculating, and manipulative, with very little understanding of humanity.
____{ Identity }
This is a little muddled even to Lethe. She knows that technically she is labelled a Fa'e -- whatever those are. Lady Airi, after all, had helped her into this new life, and for that she must be grateful. However, she doesn't feel like a Fa'e: no astounding powers, no wildly colored hair, no jewels, no wings...
She first and foremost identifies herself still as the River Lethe, and it is unlikely that she will ever stop.
____{ Goals }
It is still unknown what these are. She is working hard still to fit in better -- her speech has at last altered, and though she still has her moments of speaking just how she thinks (that is, very oddly and rarely gramatically correct), she's learned to control her tongue and deflect any attention she might normally get from not being a native speaker. Her movements have become somewhat more graceful. Primarily she seems concerned with defining herself as she is in her current shape -- not human but not (as her River-siblings insist) River either.

____{ River }Before she was a Fa'e, Lethe was the river of oblivion, one of the several rivers of the Greek Underworld created by Hades. She was also known as the ameles potamos (river of unmindfulness), and the river flowed around the cave of Hypnos where its echoing murmuring induced drowsiness. She flowed through the plains of Lethe, a deserted land where nothing could grow.
She served as the border from one life to the next, and anyone who drank from her waters -- dead or alive -- surrendered their human memories (and their lives) to her, completely forgetting their earthly existance. Thus purified, they would either be allowed to reincarnate or else enter the Elysian Fields.
- All the souls had now chosen their lives, and they went in the order of their choice to Lachesis, who sent with them the genius whom they had severally chosen, to be the guardian of their lives and the fulfiller of the choice: this genius led the souls first to Clotho, and drew them within the revolution of the spindle impelled by her hand, thus ratifying the destiny of each; and then, when they were fastened to this, carried them to Atropos, who spun the threads and made them irreversible, whence without turning round they passed beneath the throne of Necessity; and when they had all passed, they marched on in a scorching heat to the plain of Forgetfulness, which was a barren waste destitute of trees and verdure; and then towards evening they encamped by the river of Unmindfulness, whose water no vessel can hold; of this they were all obliged to drink a certain quantity, and those who were not saved by wisdom drank more than was necessary; and each one as he drank forgot all things. Now after they had gone to rest, about the middle of the night there was a thunderstorm and earthquake, and then in an instant they were driven upwards in all manner of ways to their birth, like stars shooting. He himself was hindered from drinking the water. But in what manner or by what means he returned to the body he could not say; only, in the morning, awaking suddenly, he found himself lying on the pyre. -- Plato's Republic
____{ Past }
Lethe's memories (or else what she says she remembers) are suspiciously contradictory. She claims first that she did not always have conciousness; only after years through years of absorbing human lives did she begin to have life of her own. Alternately wishing to be truly human and hating her own human form, she drowned herself in her own water and was thus reborn.
Recently it has been suggested that this is not quite the case; it seemed that all Rivers, though created as inanimate locations, had had Daimons created along with them to inhabit their waters -- personifications of their purpose, representations to stand in Hades' court, aware for as long as their Rivers existed.
Lethe has made it clear she has lost none of her memories. Whether she is still lying or just hiding things is still unclear.

- Lethe, as of yet, is still awakening and experimenting with her own power. Though she can't shoot firebolts from her fingertips as she had hoped, she seems to be able to do some other interesting things too -- even if she can't see any active immediate use for them.
____{ memory retention }
Lethe never forgets. Her memories are stored away inside of her somewhere like files, though it may take her some time to pull up the right memory-file. Her memories tend to be strong, crisp, and clear; she can remember exact words, movements, colors, smells.
____{ water form }
By completely removing the ribbons from her hands, Lethe's human form loses shape and collapses down into water (not a puddle, as she will continually protest.) She can't remain in water-form for very long, nor can she move or do anything else. If she merely removes a few loops of the ribbon from her arms, then, starting from her hands, her body will (how much of it depends on how much of the ribbon was removevd) begin to have the consistancy and 'look' of clear water, while still remaining in its usual shape so that she can still move and manipulate her own self. It is so far unclear as to why this happens, or even how much use this is.
____{ retrocognition }
It has been suggested that time leaves imprints on everything it touches -- people, places, things. This is true, and as long as the particular memory is strong enough, Lethe is able to witness reconstructed scenes when she touches any one of these imprinted objects or places. This is not something she can control, however -- not when or how it begins or ends.
____{ walking and talking }
Technically not a true ability, but one that Lethe is very proud of nonetheless. She is allowed to be, it took her quite a while to get both down.

- ____{ I | Oceanus }
Oceanus was the world-ocean, an enormous river believed to encircle the world. It pooled at the center of the world, supporting the land men live on, and flowed backwards; in terms of mythology, it was considered the 'origin of all things', binding the earth and serving as the source of all rivers and streams. In order to physically reach the Underworld, it was necessary to cross this river.
It wound around the world in nine rings, and on the tenth, became a subterranean river, connecting to Styx.
The Daimon of Oceanus was a Titan, the only one to not attack his father Uranus with the rest of his siblings.
____{ II | Styx }
The tenth ring of Oceanus, with a tenth of the world-river's waters flowing through him, Styx surrounded the Underworld and was largely meant to keep the souls of the dead imprisoned. Like his siblings, any physical contact with his waters would have deadly results. Oaths sworn by the river Styx are binding by divinity; any one , he or she would lie breathless for a year, never tastes Ambrosia and Nectar and would become spiritless and voiceless. After spending thus one year in sickness he or she would be cut off for nine years from the god's councils and feasts and could not return until the tenth year.
The River Styx itself was known as the River of Hate; Styx' daimon, the personification and goddess of the river, was the daughter of Oceanus.
Not much is known about the current incarnation of Styx, Lethe's brother. He's truthful -- bitingly so -- and speaks his mind; he doesn't seem too concerned about their present situation, or that interested in Lethe's mortal life.

- ____{ coming soon }
Lethe has not had much mortal experience with her River siblings. Though it has been proven that they do, in fact, still exist, it is still unknown how or why (or even what they've been doing all this time.)
Lethe has met Styx and Acheron; Phlegethon, Cocytus, and Mnemosyne are still at large.

- ____{ guardian }

Unfortunately, Lethe didn't have much luck the day she was permanently bound to her guardian, Cerena. Guardianship is a pretty serious affair -- without one, Fa'e will fade back into obscurity and a state of nonexistance -- but from looking at Cerena, you wouldn't be able to tell that they were there to do anything other than make their charges look good in comparison.
date of birth» january 20th 1989
age» teen; 17
skintone» healthy peach
eye color» unremarkable blue
hair color» brown? blonde? who can tell?
occupation» spazz
likes» colors, shiny things, useless trinkets, clouds, running around like crazy
neutral» spirits, responsibility
dislikes» the dark, having to keep still, the unknown
favorite colors» everything except for mud brown
favorite foods» sushi
favorite music» yodelling
essentially» belongs in a padded room.
Before coming to Gaia, Cerena was supposedly once a Valkyrie, in charge of escorting lost souls to the afterlife and beyond. Perhaps she had never completed her training, or had decided to run away, or -- knowing her -- perhaps she had just gotten lost.
Cerena always means well, but (as they say) the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. She's honestly thoughtless and doesn't consider the consequences to her actions very well, and thus often finds herself tripping over a particularly stubborn rock and faceplanting in the birthday cake she baked for someone while cheerfully skipping along a newly discovered 'shortcut'. She's not very well co-ordinated, and doesn't even have talent for anything in particular to make up for all her shortcomings; it's still a mystery as to how a very young and inexperienced girl like her managed to become the guardian of a Fa'e.
Even so, she's very loving. She doesn't discriminate against people (because she has a memory span of 10 seconds and wouldn't even remember why she was supposed to particularly dislike something) and will do everything in her power to help someone, whoever her unfortunate victim is. Lethe realizes that she can learn from Cerena, just only the things she mustn't ever do.
Recently, due to a mysterious illness, Cerena had lost all of her memories from before the time Lethe was a kid.

- ____{ Xochitl }
Xo is an enigma to Lethe, and while she likes to pretend to know all about the catgirl, in truth, she simply boggles her. Feathers for hair, a tail, claws... They met in the HQ, alone, where Lethe showed off (for the last time) her ability to turn her hands to water, but didn't really bond until they later got lost in the woods together and thought about eating each other to survive. Now they run around together and get into all sorts of trouble.
Xo is my best friend. Well, one of them. She's the First Lady of best friends, though. She is a little strange but has good ideas and makes me look good standing next to her, plus she is hardcore. (It is very good to have a friend who is hardcore, just in case.) Also, I like her because I don't have to be nice all the time.
____{ Callix }
Lethe has had all sorts of adventures with Callix -- though she used to think of him as a minion, now she's finding she sort of has to reevaluate her use for him. She hasn't figured out anything in concrete yet, but he's fun to have around and has wings besides. She once fell briefly under his charming 'spell', but (oddly enough) only vaguely remembers the sensation and will deny it anyway.
Callix is.. Callix. Anyway, he has nice hair! Umm.. What else... Well, he's fun to talk to. It's always easy to just be around him, I dunno, I don't have to put much effort into thinking what I have to say, except when other boys come for some reason. He's a little odd but I like him very much anyway. He is my second best friend (I am allowed to have more than one.)
____{ Sei }
Sei is one of Lethe's oldest friends, and is one who shares a lot of key experiences with her. She is the only person she has 'mentally explored', so far, and the only person she has 'murdered'. (Though she knows he didn't actually die, she, for some odd reason, feels proud when thinking that she might have.)
He's probably the one who knows the most about.. me. Or some part of me, anyway, the River part and not the Fa'e part (there's not really much of a difference but I can't really explain it otherwise.) I can speak in my old language to him, and he knows about my power, and little things no one else does yet. He's very calm, I'm always nice around him. He's third best friend (because I am so cool I get three.)
____{ Dustin }
Dustin, one of Lethe's newest friends, is also her youngest. It's amazing that the two get along at all, considering how different they are. Lethe likes having someone that looks up to her, even if she hasn't been doing a good job as of late of continuing to be worthy of this respect. Arrien, Dustin's guardian, is one of Lethe's favorite people.
Dusty is... odd. No, she's not odd, she's very nice and I like the way she looks, sort of like me inside-out, but she is... She is... Difficult. She is not like.. anything I know very well, she is difficult to predict, much less please... I don't know. It's not very important to me if she likes me or not. ...Ok, it is, but I'm not going to let her know. Anyway, she's much more fun now that she can walk and talk, even if she does it much better than I can. I don't understand her! I like her better than Keir though -- at least the stupid catgirl did something right for once.
____{ Aylana }
--
When I grow up, I want to be pretty like Aylana is. Also: she has too many pairs of wings, and should give some to me. But! When I was in prom and screaming and stuff, she was the only one who paid attention to me, and gave me juice, so I like her a lot. She's a lot better than I had originally thought she was.
____{ Lucien }
--
When I was younger, we used to play a lot together, but not anymore? I guess he's got better things to do now, hnf. HNF. Well, that's okay, two can play at THAT game. Or not play, as the case may be. Though it was fun to watch him walk.. You would think he would fall over all the time? I have a lot of good memories of him, honestly, just not RECENTLY.
____{ Seung }
--
The newest baby? A 'mothfish'. She looks a lot like me! We could be twins, maybe? Well she has to grow up more anyway. She can't do very much yet, so she's kind of boring, but I hope she likes me. If she remembers me at all.
____{ Naolin }
--
Naolin changed recently, a LOT. He is all scary now and kind of a lot uglier for some reason. Not really on the outside, but kind of dirty and scary and gross for a boy. I guess 'cuz before he wasn't very much different than a girl. I'm not sure if I like the new him. He teaches me lots of things no one else will, but he also doesn't like me as much as he used to, which is not a good and proper improvement. Also: I am almost taller than him, HA.
____{ Zevulon }
--
I don't know what to think of Zev anymore either. I really liked him, we are lots alike in very many different ways, but... He stuck his tongue out at someone else when he used to only with me! I won't forgive it.
____{ Mortimer }
--
Mortimer used to be cool, because he could talk to rocks and was all furry, but now I think he should be sent back to the zoo where he undoubtedly came from, and he smells like poo besides. How could he make Lady Airi so sad? How could he not trust me? I mean, sure, I'm technically betraying him but he won't even give me the chance to!
____{ Silver }
--
He wouldn't believe me either. I heard lots of mean, bad things about him, and he's kind of scary. Too tall and furry (not in the good way like Morty used to be.) I think he'd be a better rug than Fa'e, maybe I should talk to Airi about this.
____{ Riven }
--
Riven is... I don't really have an opinion on him either way. He was very nice to me when I was littler, like at the first prom with the dark things with teeth. We danced together. But apparently he is not a genie and will not grant my wishes, which is sort of frustrating (maybe he hasn't properly awakened yet, but isn't he too old for that?) He's also hard to pin down -- sort of like Dusty, but in a different way. I'm never entirely sure of how to act around him. I saw him at the latest prom but we didn't talk for very long.
____{ Lady Airi }
--
If Lady Airi wasn't, well, my Lady, I think she would be Best Friend number 5 (is that too many? Should she just be a special friend instead?) It's sort of hard to believe that she is young-looking like me, and acts young like me too, but still created all us Fa'e -- I wish I knew more about her. She's very nice and, well, sensitive and I wish she didn't cry so much, and she's also pretty. She wants to release Chaos and I don't care about that, but I made an oath on Styx to help her. ...So far I'm not doing a very good job of being a secret agent, which is kind of upsetting...

He said the dead had souls, but when I asked him
How could that be -- I thought the dead were souls,
He broke my trance. Don't that make you suspicious
That there's something the dead are keeping back?
Yes, there's something the dead are keeping back.
