Stupid Gunpoweder treason. V for Vendetta got it wrong, Guy Fawkes was framed by the King.

The King in himself wasn't very popular so he got a few people to convince their enemy to attempt to bomb them on a set date. The King figured, hey, wouldn't people like him more if he almost got blown up but his guards found the person?
