What is Kingdom Hearts?

Two major storytellers join forces in Disney and SquareSoft's collaborative action/RPG known as Kingdom Hearts. Beginning on an island paradise, the game follows the exploits of a14 year-old boy named Sora as he travels across multiple worlds searching for the whereabouts of his long lost friends. Designed by the renowned Square personality Tetsuya Nomura and voiced by A-list Hollywood talent, Kingdom Hearts combines more than 100 familiar Disney characters including Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as they encounter familiar Final Fantasy icons like Cloud and Squall in their ongoing battle against an evil relentless force known as The Heartless.

"Main Characters"




"Sora"

Age-14

Sora, an outgoing and cheerful teenager who was born on the Destiny Islands 14 years ago. Riku, his elder by a year, and Kairi, an optimistic young girl, are Sora's best friends. The three decide to leave the islands and set sail to discover the world of Kairi's childhood. However, before the planned departure the three friends are mysteriously separated. Sora finds himself alone in Traverse Town and decides to search for his two comrades in an attempt to return home with them to the Destiny Islands.




"Kairi"


Kairi arrived at the Destiny Islands some years ago on a night, which saw shooting stars showering across the sky. She lost her memory that night and to this day cannot recall any details of her origins. Now 14 years of age, she has grown into a cheerful, strong-minded teenager who feels very much at home on the islands. Nevertheless, Kairi and her two friends, Sora and Riku, decide to leave the Destiny Islands to learn more about Kairi's past. However, before they can set off on their journey, their plans are interrupted by the Heartless...


"Riku"

Age-15

Description The 15-year-old Riku is a self-confident teenager who seems rather mature for his age. Considered particularly gifted, he is admired and somewhat envied by many of his peers. Thus, the firm bond of friendship that has developed between him and Sora is not entirely free of rivalry. Riku's inquiring mind entices him to leave the Destiny Islands along with Sora and Kairi.



"Goofy"

Description Goofy is the captain of the royal knights at Disney Castle. A compassionate and cheerful fellow by nature, he dislikes fighting and hurting others. Consequently, he brandishes a blunt shield in battle. While it may seem that he is not the brightest, Goofy is definitely one of the king's loyal men. He resolutely sets off with Doanld, determined to rescue their monarch and to find the "key bearer".



"Donald"

Description The well-known, temperamental duck takes on the role of royal magician at Disney Castle. A confidant of his missing monarch, Donald departs with Goofy in search of his sovereign. The king left nothing but a letter with a clue instructing Donald to only cooperate with the person bearing the "Key" ...

"Battle System"


Kingdom Hearts has a very original battle system which after you know all the tricks of the trade, really isn't that difficult to understand. Indepth yes, difficult no.The system is part RPG and part Platformer. You are totally free like in a platformer where you can run jump and dodge or fight enemies as you please. This is different from Square-Enix's usual game because often their games restrict you from jumping and you enter turn-based battles. The basics of the system are you can jump with the Circle button, X button executes the selected command. In the bottom-left corner of the screen there is a box that says "Command" at the top. This is the in-game menu that allows you to do anything and everything. There are four boxes that have different commands, you can scroll through them with Up and Down on the Control Pad or Up and Down on the Right Analog Stick. When a box is highlighted a key figure will appear to the right and the box will be lighter and appear indented to the right. The command menu is blue when no enemies are near and turns red when you enter a battle. Note that you can not enter the pause menu when the command menu is red.

The first box says "Attack". When this is highlighted Pressing the X button will make Sora swing his sword, pressing X repeatedly will do a Combo attack. When you press the Circle Button Sora will jump, Sora can attack while in the air.

The next box is "Magic". When this is highlighted Sora can cast spells he learns throughout his adventure. In the menu you are able to have a quick list of spells. Set 3 spells to the X, Circle and Triangle buttons. Then in game, hold down L1 button to bring up the spells, press the corrisponding button and Sora will cast the spells. Also for the full list of magic spells, when the Magic box is selected, press right on either the Control Pad or Right Analog Stick for the full list, press X on the spell of your choice and it will be cast. To attack with your sword again, make sure the selected box is back on Attack.

"Items" menu is basically the same as magic, to get more items in your menu buy them at local shops (commonly found in Traverse Town) then in the pause menu exchange the items in your stock with empty slots in your characters item space. They will then become avaliable from the Command menu.

The"Custom" box, this executes custom commands that are not often used in battles. For example when you walk against a barrel, this slot will say something like "Grab". Selecting it will make you pick up the barrel. Then the box will say something like "Throw". Selecting and pressing this will make Sora throw the barrel. When something appears in this box it often means an object can be interacted with. Although later in the game you will gain abilities like Ragnarok. During battle this ability will be highlighted at the bottom which you can activate unleashing a furious combo. Here's a tip, if you need to access this box quickly sometime during the game when you're currently on "Attack". Press up on the D-Pad or R-Analog and the selection will skip down to the bottom.


You'll notice when your playing the game that in battle a yellowish circle will appear around an enemy, in our shot a stronger blue one appears. What's the point of that? This is the locking system in Kingdom Hearts. This allows Sora to focus his attacks on a single enemy or a single part of a large boss. The yellow crosshair that appears is a light lock which will make Sora attack that enemy but if you turn away Sora will no longer focus on him. Although when you press the R1 button the lock will turn from the semi-transparent yellow to a strong blue, also a box will appear in the top-left corner that says "LOCK ON!". Now your camera will center on the selected enemy so he never leaves your sight, this also makes Sora focus every attack on that one enemy. If you no longer want to target that enemy just press R1 again and the target will unlock. When an enemy is targeted you can press R2 and L2 to toggle through all the enemies on the screen. You can also do this on bosses. Bosses often have weak points and more often than not multiple places to attack them. This switching target technique can be very useful in these situations.


Now what could this be? Sora's face and a bunch of bars going around his head? Well, you first guess should be Health atleast. But that's only half of it. This is the HP (Hit Points) and MP (Magic Points) meters. This is the RPG side of this game. The green bar is hit points, it decreases everytime Sora is hit, it increases every time Sora is healed. The blue bar is Magic Points. Each time Sora casts a spell this goes down, every time Sora uses an item to restore MP it goes back up. To see the exact amount of HP and MP you have go to the pause menu and in the characters info there is you AP, MP, and HP in digits. Everytime Sora levels up and HP or MP is increased the bars get longer.When an enemy is defeated, it often drops little balls that can restore HP and MP.

"Magic Spells & Summoning"

There are a variety of spells and executions. As well there are quite a few Summonable characters which aren't a vital role in battle but can be a help. I personally summoned about twice during the entire game but different players have different strategies.

First you have to understand the quick way to cast spells, which is the "magic shortcut menu". Using this menu is simple, while in game press and hold the L1 button, the command menu in the bottom left will change to a Shortcut menu. Three different spells can be equiped here and activated when you press wither X, Square or Triangle. These spells can be chaned in the pause menu to suite your needs, just go to Customize and select Sora and you can change the spells up as you see fit. When in game, release L1 to return to the normal command menu.


"Magic Types"


There are plenty of magic spells but only 7 magic types. Many of the spells are just upgrades of magic you already possess. Here are the basic magic types:


Fire
- When activated a fireball is lit at the end of Sora's keyblade and shot at an enemy. As the spell is upgraded the size of the fireball increases with the amount of damage. This spell can also be used to light objects such as candles.


Blizzard
- Blizzard is an icy blast that shoots frost toward the intended target and spreads outward. As it is upgraded the spells has a futher reach as well as strength. This spell can also be used to put out candles and freeze objects.


Thunder
- This spell causes lightning to strike from the sky all around the intended target. If there is no target the Lightning will come down around Sora. This is effective against both airborne and ground enemies. As it is upgraded the attack radius will grow along with damage inflicted. This can be used for other purposes such as powering objects.


Cure
- Magic spell that will heal a selected party member, as it is upgraded it will rejuvenate more HP.


Gravity
- This spell creates a dark orb around the target, flattening anything caught inside it, it will take flying enemies out of the sky and reduce HP but never defeat the enemy. It can only do damage until enemy has 1 HP. The radius and reduction rate increases as it is upgraded. This spell can be used to bring floating objects to the ground.


Stop
- When used this will stop the targeted enemy in its tracks. You can attack the frozen enemy and when it unfreezes all the damage consumed will inflict upon it at once. As you upgrade this spell more enemies will freeze and their pause time will be longer.


Aero
- This is a defensive spell. When used it will create a shield of wind around the selected character. Aero will reduce damage taken, Aurora will reduce damage and damage enemies on contact and Aeroga will do both of those plus reflect attacks including many special attacks from bosses.

"Secrets"

"The Mystery Mold"


The Black Fungus Heartless that can be found in places like Agrahbah and Halloween Town but don't miss your chance at getting this item, these guys are rare! To increase your chances of getting this item equip Lucky Strike to all of your party members. This Mystery Mold, unlike it's cousin Mystery Goo, it isn't a synthesis item. It can only be sold, and for a price of 9,999 munny!!!


"Hidden Boss Battles"



Sephiroth - The nemisis from Final Fantasy VII. He can be fought one on one in the Platinum Match at the Coliseum. Only after the new tournaments open up which happens after you lock Hollow Bastion.


Kurt Zisa - In Agrabah, go to Aladdin's house after the keyhole in Hollow Bastion has been locked and speak with the magic carpet.


Phantom - After locking the Hollow Bastion keyhole return to Neverland and disembark in the Cabin, place Peter Pan in your party and talk to Tinkerbell in the corner and prepare to fight the Phantom of the Clock Tower.


Ice Titan - Beat the Hades Cup tournament which unlocks after you lock Hollow Bastion. Once the Hades Cup is your's pick the Gold Match to take on this titan.


How do I get this secret movie!?

It's straight-forward but a handfull. Here's what you need to do:
Complete Hades Cup at Coliseum
Release all 99 Dalmations
Seal every keyhole, including the Olympus Coliseum and 100 Acre Wood

What is this secret ending!?

This secret ending is a handfull to unlock but it's worth it. It is a full CGI cutscene with characters we've never seen, a place we've never been with Heartless we've never fought. Many people feel this ending is the first footage of Kingdom Hearts II. Many feel it is the secret Teaser Trailer.

It shows a clocked character and a character a top a building with a bandana over his eyes. The hooded figure is surrounded by Heartless and pulls out two keyblades!! He then say's "Where's Sora?". The screen changes to a lot of dialoge flashing by in Japanese and English and stops at the dialoge "We'll go together". The trailer is entitled: "Another Side. Another Story."

This game was introduced by Taiyo, and I have deemed it worthy enough to be given full support (and advertisement! heart ) by me, myself and I. Since that makes three votes out of three wink - here it is!



Kingdom Hearts Two

This part of the discourse is being worked on. Speculations and otherwise will get here as they come to me (or later, but I promise I'll try!!)

Confirmed items of interest: (cuz' I seen pictures! biggrin )

-Auron will be there - picture scary O.o
-Hades is back (and so is Cerberus! Again! Why?!! gonk )
Trance drive confirmations:
- Your drive meter needs to be full to kick Sora into Trance mode.
- The drive meter will be located right above the mp gauge on Sora's little health picture
- Using the trance drive merges Sora with another party member (no word yet on whether this goes beyond Goofy and Donald, but...), the party member disappears, Sora's clothes change, and he has access to new moves, and another spiffy weapon for dual-wielding!

*And I like this item of interest : The camera has been moved to the right shoulder analog stick! Yay!

The Release Date is, according to Game Informer, set for Spring of next year. sweatdrop

Not through anything that he had a hand in, mind you, but because someone (being a KH fan!) made a death threat against someone who was arguing with them. This is unacceptable behavior. As a result, I have added the rules listed above, and ask that everyone who comes in here to please be respectful of not only the people who agree with your opinion, but also those who Disagree with your opinion!

After moving over the weekend, I returned to the Gaian forums to find an interesting predicament. AkaRai, whom I credited, quite appropriately, for the implementation of this thread, is leaving Gaia for good.

Well, first of all, his thread - which is no longer around, and I will remove the link to it - was deleted. I do not know the reasons why, nor will I speculate. I have heard facts, and rumors that may be facts, and maybe even some lies sugar-coated to become facts. sad Whatever, I don't care. If you really wish to see what transpired, here is the link to the new thread that was moved to the Chatterbox. Here is where I got a great deal of information on the situation, tried to help, then decided against it. I will not give any reasons why I chose to do this, save that it was no longer something I wished to support or argue against.

I created this thread to cut down on the amount of repeat threads and as a direct result of someone's request This thread is labelled 'official' because it may do one of two things as a result:
1) attract someone's eye and encourage them to post here
2) give the VG forum users a place to speak of general and specific KH topics.

This is not to say that you, the Gaian user, cannot create more KH topics in the VG forum. Far from it, in fact. As there is no sticky, sub-forum, or official word from the mods, there is no way that you are doing anything wrong by creating new threads.
However... stare
I would ask, implore, and even encourage you to think before you do so, if you - the person reading this - feel that the forum needs another KH thread. Is the topic you are looking at something that will take pages and pages to discuss, will make a lasting impression, and develop the support of people interested enough to write in the thread more than once? confused Will you be willing to maintain it if they do not?
Is there already another thread out there that covers the exact same topic? question

These should be questions that everyone thinks about at least once before making a contribution to any forum. Repeat threads are a good example of the "WHAT??" syndrome:
A professor calls class into session. He begins on time.
A student walks in, five minutes late. There is some rustling as he settles. The professor ignores the interruption, (or, if you have my classes, he doesn't blaugh ) and continues.
Five minutes later, another student does the exact same thing.
And another.
And another..... stare

Now, imagine that, instead of waiting to ask a friend at the end of class what he missed, that first student asked the teacher. Then the next, then the next. They came in late, so they were not aware of what was being discussed - they can't be faulted for not knowing, especially if they just found out they could get into the class. (new users to Gaia neutral ) But, will the professor be able to conclude his lesson? Will he even be able to finish the beginning of what he wanted to discuss? No, logically, he will not. xp

I am fully aware that topics come and go. They are like gossip, dependent on changes in society, life, etc. I am also fully aware that we could all just ignore the repeat threads and continue on our merry way. I would have been more than happy to growl at the annoyance, and do the same myself. heart
But the fact is, if there is an issue, then someone does care. This thread is my response to them. I respect your indignation, your opinion, and your ability to speak your mind (if you have done so xd ) I hope others will do so as well. I also hope everyone will discuss, as adults, with those who disagree with them. smile
