- One day, the famous biogeneticist Dr. Akari was working on a new self-replicating biocomputer. The culmination of fifteen years of research, she had combined the computer with her love of gardening. The result was an immensely powerful computer that looked just like a cabbage.
At first, the experiment was going well. The cabbages were healthy. Then, through some unknown accident, the programming mutated, and instead of creating new cabbages, the cabbages created a new human. A living, breathing, thinking person born from a plant. But these were not regular computers: there was no way to turn them off. They just kept running the program over and over, creating new children.
Unfortunately, this left Dr. Akari with a very big problem: What to do about all these new children? She decided to turn to Gaia for help...
Little did she know that another scientist, Dr. August Crusoe, would seize upon her operation as a means towards his own nefarious ends and start a side business of his own right next-door to her garden. His aim: to supply exotic and alien "specimens" to anyone willing to pay for them.
Stage One » The Cabbage or the Crate

Cabbage Patch children begin as either cabbages or crates. With cabbages, children grow inside the head of the cabbage. When the child is ready to be born the cabbage opens up. The cabbage plants are about two and a half feet across, with the head taking up at least fifteen inches. They are indestructible and will not open until the child inside is ready to be born.
You can pick a cabbage up from the lab or have it delivered to your house. Caring for a cabbage plant is very easy. Just water it using the spray bottle provided and keep it somewhere with good light. Sometimes dead leaves at the edges will come off; this is normal. After a few days, your cabbage will open to reveal a child! The plant must be returned to the lab afterwards. You can drop it off or someone will be around the pick it up within a week.
You can also pick your child up from the Nursery. Here you will find children who were born in the cabbage garden, ready and waiting for homes.
Crates are obtained through Dr. Crusoe. They can be delivered to your doorstep by private courier -- sometimes accidentally -- or if you happen to find Crusoe at his office, you can pick children up directly from there. The crates measure roughly 5'x5'x3' and are too heavy and big to easily pick up. They open with a metal door at the back. Just unlock the latch and turn the door handle. There are no markings of any kinds to indicate where the crates come from, but there is a flier taped to the side which informs you about free daycare and schooling at the Liberty Center. Like cabbages, you can either return crates to Crusoe's office (leave them at the door) or someone will come by to pick it up in a few days when you're not looking. All children captured by Crusoe have had their memories wiped.
Tend for a cabbage plant, adopt at the Nursery, or open a crate. The choice is yours.
Stage Two » The Baby

Squirming, wriggling, and hungry! Babies need lots of care and food to grow. The baby stage covers ages 0-3. Because every cabbage is different, your child may be born at any level of development in this range. Cabbage Patch children grow very quickly, so don't be surprised if your little one is learning to walk and talk within just a few weeks.
Stage Three » The Child

Having mastered motor skills and learned to communicate, your child is ready to embark on the adventure of life! Now would be a good time to enroll your child in school to learn how to read and write and perform arithmatic. The Child stage covers ages 6-11. Again, Cabbage Patch kids grow quickly, so your child will be nailing those multiplication tables before you know it!
Stage Four » The Teenager
Here's where parenting gets complicated. Your child has grown into a teen, and that means hormones. Expect your teen to be exploring his or her identity, figuring out life and what love means. Education is still important, but you may find your teenager resists going to school, or picks up some bad habits. Don't worry too much, it's only a phase, and with your help your teen will grow out of it! The Teen stage covers ages 13-17.
Stage Five » The Youth
Hopefully, your son or daughter has now figured out some things about life, and those hormones have settled down. Your child is now ready to embark upon the first steps into adulthood. This may mean going to college, getting a job, or pursuing a dream. Possibly even settling down with that special someone. The Youth stage covers ages 18-25.
Stage Six » The Adult
Congratulations, your son or daughter has grown into an adult. This may mean a job, marriage, a house, or any number of things. Maybe even some grandchildren! (Assuming none have already been born as a result of youthful indiscretions.) What it most definitely means is that you can now remodel your child's bedroom into a jacuzzi tub. Face it, after all that parenting, you deserve some relaxation.

- Please Do »
01 » Observe Gaia's TOS and behave appropriately!
02 » Listen to the owner, and if I'm are not around, treat the managers with the same respect.
03 » Chat and roleplay in the main thread! We'd love to get to know you!
04 » Ask questions in the main thread, or PM them when appropriate.
05 » Use brackets for OOC chatter when there is roleplay in the main thread.
06 » Keep OOC chatter to a minimum when there is roleplay going on.
07 » Try to use proper third-person story format when roleplaying with others.
08 » Read the front page!
09 » Read the FAQ and other guild stickies!
Please Don't »
01 » Take or modify any art or graphics from this shop without expressed permission.
02 » Start flamewars and arguments. If you have any issues, the proper action is to PM the shop account with all necessary information so that the matter may be reviewed.
03 » Advertise other shops or threads in here. You get one warning.
04 » Use chatspeak in roleplay.
05 » Dissuade others from questing or entering events.
06 » Post in someone's diary or journal without their permission.
07 » PM the artists. We have artist threads in our guild so you can communicate with them!
08 » Use fancy custom post styles and graphics. You may find it pretty, but for the rest of us, it's an eyesore that takes up space and forces us to scroll more.
09 » Argue about the rules. If you don't like the rules, don't join the shop! Arguing may result in warnings. Warnings may result in banning.
10 » Initiate an order and then retract it. It's dishonorable and disrespectful. We will be understanding of this once (sometimes things do happen!). The second time you will be banned.
Absolute Rules »
01 » You may not use characters based on real, living people. This means you cannot have a Cabbage Patch child based on Johnny Depp, but you could have one based on Captain Jack Sparrow (a fictional character) or Julius Caesar (deceased).
02 » The word of the shop owner is final in all matters pertaining to the shop.
03 » You must be active at least once every six months and post a minimum of six diary entries a year. Failure to meet both requirements may result in rehoming. You get two warnings.
03 » Rules may be modified or added as needed.
04 » In the event your artist leaves Gaia for some unforseeable reason, please be prepared to accept the art of a staff artist. We will do everything we can to give you art by your original artist, but these things do happen!
05 » Our guild is open to lurkers. To identify yourself as a lurker and not just a random join request, please include the word "radishes" in your join request and tell us why you're interested in joining!

- There are two primary settings for the Patch, Dr. Akari's Lab and the Liberty Center. They are entirely indepedent of each other, aside fromsharing one staff member (Iijima) and involving the Patch children. All adoption proceedings take place at the Lab. Adoption is the only thing that takes place at the lab. Everything else you can find at the Liberty Center.
Dr. Akari's Lab »
Staff » Dr. Akari, Ariko, Sadanobu Iijima, Sable Hazard
If you head south from Barton Town just right, you'll end up on the road that passes Dr. Akari's lab instead of Gaia Towns. The lab is a plain-looking building with white stucco walls. It has a large open entry that looks onto a garden. Signs direct visitors one of two ways: left to the Labs, or right to the Adoption Center.
Direct access to the labs is restricted, but there is a small reception area with pamphlets about the exciting possibilities of biotechnology. The receptionist there greets visitors and mentions that in addition to all this fantastic research, there are some very special children here looking for good homes. Perhaps a visit to the adoption center is advised?
- The Garden »
Directly in the middle of the lab complex is the garden. Every day is sunny with a slight breeze, perpetually summer. Vines and leafy bushes grow along the walls and little beds of flowers greet visitors, scenting the air with their perfume. In the far corner is a shady tree with a few wooden lawn chairs underneath. Occasionally a scientist or research assistant can be seen napping with a glass of cold ice tea.
The largest part of the garden is the cabbage patch. Seven neat rows of healthy-looking cabbages, glistening under the sunlight. The watering system is completely automated. Periodically a mist of nutrient-enriched water appears, perfect for catching rainbows. A lucky visitor might find Dr. Akari herself in the patch, tending to the garden.
The Adoption Center »
Staff » Sisters of the White Cloth
This small waiting area is crowded with chairs and tables. There are some magazines, but they all seem to be science journals with little interest to the casual reader. A large bulletin board is covered in notices and photos of children and... cabbages? According to the information posted here, you can adopt a baby, or a cabbage!
A nurse comes into the room and asks which service you're interested in. If you inquire about the children, she leads you back to the Nursery to meet the adorable little tykes. If you inquire about the cabbages, she explains that there are two different types. First, cabbages already containing children. If you take home one of these, within a few days a child will appear. Second, cabbages that can accept DNA, creating a child which is genetically related to one or more parents. There is a pamphlet with information about how to care for a cabbage should you elect to take one home, and if you're interested in a child based on your DNA, the procedure takes only a minute or two at the lab.
Before you leave, you pick up a flyer on the table offering free daycare, healthcare, and education at the "Liberty Center."
The Nursery »
Situated on the other side of the garden from Dr. Akari's offices is the nursery. Three rows of seven cribs provide plenty of room for any unhomed babies. They are attended to by a group of polite, neatly-dressed nurses. There are big, airy windows to let the breeze in. Little plush toys adorn each of the cribs: bears, bunnies, even a little green alligator. Most of the cribs are empty, but the handful of children waiting here seem happy and healthy.
Xenobiology Research & Supply »
Staff » Dr. August Crusoe
A few yards past the Adoption Center & Nursery is another door, solid metal with rivets, rusty and disreputable. A crooked sign on the door indicates that this is office is "BY APPOINTMENT ONLY - 555.327.7435" -- but good luck getting anything besides the answering machine beep. You can knock on the door, but rarely is there any answer. Here Dr. Crusoe sells strange and exotic creatures from all over, things both magical and alien. You might spot his ads on Craigslist or on cheaply photocopied fliers found in the street. Some of the creatures he deals in qualify as children. Be forewarned, Crusoe is not a trustworthy fellow. You never know what you'll end up with when you deal with him. He sometimes ships the wrong crates to his buyers, or ships the right crate to the wrong address. Of course, sometimes you get exactly what you order.

The Liberty Center »
Staff » Percival Prowley
Situated halfway between Gaia and Earth, the Liberty Center is a very special place for very special children. It was founded by a group of mysterious benefactors with the intent of providing an education and medical services for the children of Gaia. The Center understands the unique needs of Gaian children: the accelerated growth, the unusual social pressures, the presence of strange abilities. The specialists at the Center are ready to assist in any way possible.
The center itself is a five-story tiered brick complex with curved architecture and a surrounding brick wall. Planters help break up all the brick, overflowing with leafy green plants and even a few small trees. In total, there are three major buildings connected by open walkways. The tallest building is the school and administrative affices, towering at five stories with a rooftop patio. The clinic/hospital has its own building, and the daycare center shares its building with several classrooms and a few additional facilities. The "front" of the Center is the Gaia side, with the hospital to the left and the main building to the right. The playground and daycare center are in the middle. There are plenty of clear directional signs in several languages. The Earth side entrance is behind the daycare, near the baseball field.
- The Clinic »
Staff » Dr. Nellie Parler
A modest three-story brick building, the Clinic is really a small hospital, capable of handling even the worst traumas. Though they have limited patient capacity, the medical technology present is very advanced. The Clinic is a private facility and only open to the public in emergency situations. It is extremely well-staffed, with several doctors, dozens of nurses, and various support personnel present at all times. The Clinic has a selective medical teaching program which accepts less than ten students at a time.
The Daycare Center »
Staff » Jessie Samson, Xi-Wang Cheng, Evan Luck
Catering to babies and toddlers, the Daycare Center is a place to have fun and gain those important early social skills. There are toys and picture books and snacks and a picturesque little playground. The vigilant staff are always watching the little tykes to keep them safe and happy. The Daycare Center is available to provide twenty-four hour service in the event of emergencies, though services are limited after eight p.m. and before six-thirty in the morning. Parents are encouraged to visit and spend time at the Daycare Center with their children; the playground is always open for playdates. The area is very safe and secure, with a chain-link fence to keep children in and security to keep the baddies out.
The School »
Staff » Calder Quoile
Central to the school's operation is the belief that all children are special and unique. Educational services are catered to individual learning and students need only take those classes that pertain directly to their lives. The Center offers general courses and areas of special study: everything from reading, writing, and arithmatic to magic, fighting, and computer programming. The course level offering varies from elementary to college, and the school can be of use to children, teens, and youths alike.
The school is able to offer this eclectic mix of subjects due to its flexible teaching staff. The available staff is determined by whatever subjects the children currently need. Additionally, full time staff offer a variety of courses throughout the year.
We recommend all children take certain core classes, subject to their guardian's approval. These core classes are Math, English, Science (or Magic substitute), and Physical Education/Health. A creative elective such as art or music is advised. A history course pertaining to the child's universe of residence is also advisable if possible.
For a full listing of courses, or to offer course suggestions, please click here.
The Library »
Staff » Ellette Ellimiire
The Center's library is filled with books on every subject imaginable, including both fiction and nonfiction works. It also houses all the pertinent school texts needed for any classes. Whenever you need a book, there's sure to be a librarian to help just around the corner. Visit the Library.
Additional Facilities »
The Center also has a fullsize pool, a small gym (open to employees and family for a small fee), a baseball diamond, and a modest living area, mostly for visiting faculty, but available to students and family in emergencies.
One of the Center's most important features is its counseling staff. The Center employs several psychologists and therapists in varied specialties for family and child alike, everything from grief counseling to life skills.
Also important is the cafeteria, where you can get a good, cheap meal prepared by some very talented chefs and culinary students! The Cafeteria is open to students and families at all times, and open to the public at lunch and dinner.

- Characters marked "NPC" are free for limited use: you may use them when needed to advance story, allowing you to roleplay key events (such as adoption, visiting the Center, or obtaining your cabbage) without needing to have shop staff present. Please remember that some NPCs do have players, so if you use them, please keep the interaction to a minimum. If a character is not marked NPC, you must have the permission of its player before use.
Please also note that this is by no means a full listing of all Patch personnel! You can assume that the Patch employs various secretaries, teachers, and medical personnel not listed here, and you are free to use these nameless characters as general NPCs.
We are also always looking for new staff, and dedicated roleplayers who roleplay as staff can earn benefits, including your own Patch child! This can be a great way to delurk and earn a child from the shop. If you are interested in playing a staff character, please PM the shop mule with a character description, info on your RP experience, and a brief explanation of why you want to join the shop.

- Contained in this post is all the information you need to know in order to grow your child from one stage to the next. There are three main types of requirements.
- Solo Entry » Any story or diary entry written by you alone. May be a story, or "Dear Diary" format. 400+ words.
Closed Roleplay » A roleplay between you and one or two other people, conducted privately. 1000+ words
Open Roleplay » A roleplay which is open for anyone to join, or a private roleplay involving four or more people. There is no length requirement for Open RPs, but you must personally write at least 500 words and post at least three times. (This is to prevent anyone from making a single post in an Open RP just to try and get growth credit.)
All growth requirements are flexible. If you prefer one type of roleplay over another, you can exchange requirements at the following rate:
- 4 Solo Entries » 2 Closed RPs » 1 Open RPs
The requirements given for each stage are minimum requirements. You are welcome to write more than what is required. In fact, we encourage it!
Because most people find roleplaying a cabbage or baby to be frustrating, the growth requirements for those stages are intentionally small. Child, teenager, and youth stages are considerably more involved, to allow for the full character development possibilities those stages represent.
Stage One » The Cabbage / The Crate
Requirements » None! This is what your child starts out as. It's a placeholder until you can complete the growths for...
Stage Two » The Baby
Requirements » 2 diary posts of any type (diary entry, solo story, or joint roleplay)
If you have a cabbage, you can choose to take care of the cabbage or adopt from the Nursery. If you have a crate, you can have your crate delivered or pick your child up from Crusoe's office. At least one of your two posts must be selected from the following options:
- A » Caring for the cabbage plant,
B » Making the decision to adopt an infant from the Nursery,
C » Placing an order or making an appointment with Dr. Crusoe, and/or
D » Introducing your primary guardian character(s)
Stage Three » The Child
Requirements » 1 Closed or Open RP, 4 Solo Entries
Stage Four » The Teenager
Requirements » 5 Open RPs, 6 Closed RPs, 8 Solo Entries
Stage Five » The Youth
Requirements » 6 Open RPs, 10 Closed RPs, 15 Solo Entries
Once you have reached Youth, you have a choice as to how to proceed.
Option One » Young Adult
Requirements » 2 Open RPs, 4 Closed RPs, 9 Solo Entries
With this option, your Youth art becomes your official Adult image. Your character is "officially" a twentysomething adult.
Option Two » Full Adult
Requirements » 8 Open RPs, 14 Closed RPs, 24 Solo Entries
With this option, you receive a new piece of official art for the Adult stage. This could indicate a final character age of 25+, meaning a character in their thirties, forties, or older is possible.
Once your child is an adult, there is no further growth! However, if you like, we can periodically change your cert image to match any developments in your character's life. Simply provide us with the art you wish to appear on the cert. Once you have an adult, your character cannot be rehomed. If you wish us to continue to update your cert, though, you must continue to fulfill your activity requirements.
(The following numbers are now out of date due to changes in the above requirements and will be recalculated when I have the time/inclination.)
In total, the base requirements equal ninety posts, or six diary pages. If you did only Open RPs, you could grow your child in only 45 posts, or three pages. Conversely, if you did only solo entries, it would take 170 posts. So while you could do that, we encourage you to roleplay with other people! Not only will you get your requirements done faster, you'll help us create a community together! I understand some of you may be looking at the later requirements and thinking they're too much, but please remember these requirements are spaced over the course of months. If you were consistently active and made five posts a month, you could grow your child to a full adult in a year and a half.

- If you have a specific child in mind, or want to purchase outside of an auction or event, our staff artists offer customs. Several may also offer additional services to members of the Patch.
If you are a member of the guild, you can post in the applicable artist thread if that artist has slots open. If you are not a member of the guild, you can PM the shop mule, and we'll get you set up with the artist. All prices are listed on the artists' threads. Exact payment terms should be discussed with the artist.
Please do not PM artists directly to arrange customs. It's important for the shop to be aware of custom orders. Once your custom order is in place, the artist may direct you discuss specifics via PM.
We will try to keep the artist statuses on this post accurate, but please note that status listed on the actual artist threads supercede what's given here.
